If you’ve applied to a job in the EU, has a potential employer ever told you anything about the application of AI in the application process? #AIAct I need to say wise things about this on Dutch radio tonight. Any data is welcome!

2026-07-31 08:20:01 GMT

AI: Considerations for people who make decisions. There is enormous pressure to deploy AI, and if you believe the LinkedIn thought leadership, you'd think that if you don't get on board NOW you'll be lost forever. Meanwhile other people severely detest AI, so much so that it damages their (worthwhile) arguments against it. Below, thoughts on what to do now, and what things might best be postponed. Finally, some stimulating words on what we actually DO at the office: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/ai-for-decision-makers/

2026-07-29 20:33:39 GMT

I know it is in Dutch, but through a translator you might still enjoy this piece that discusses the AI situation. It talks about the perceived rush that isn't real, and points out you'd do well to wait it out a bit. However, the article also details how AI can't be disregarded as useless. It actually does stuff for people. However, the post then also wonders if this is in fact helpful: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/ai-voor-wie-erover-gaat/

2026-07-28 11:48:05 GMT

I have seen the future, and it does not look good. I replied to an unsolicited but well drafted personalized email message asking if it was sent using AI. And the AI itself answered instantly:

Today is Europe Day, and I raised the flag. The EU is far from perfect and much remains to be done. But also, so much has been achieved. From the Schuman declaration (1950): "... any war between France and Germany becomes not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible". And it worked. After receiving the first LLM-generated pull requests, I have decided to blanket no longer look at those. When studying a PR, I take into account who made it, and if they've previously been careful developers. LLM-generated code I have no idea about, and the amount of scrutiny required is just too much. Because I have to assume you have no idea what you are doing.

This is a fascinating read, including how the letter banning the use of the Fraktur font had a letterhead in Fraktur: https://alphahistory.com/pastpeculiar/1941-nazis-ban-jewish-fonts/

#Galileo, the EU GPS, looking a bit meh this morning. Four satellites have not received an update recently, two of them show somewhat reduced accuracy, and one is down. https://galmon.eu/

People, this Thursday I speech about Digital Commons at the opening event of the EU EDIC on Digital Commons. I have my story reasonably together by now, but if you feel there is something I should definitely mention -> [email protected]

Was forced to install the Miele app because it is the only way to tell the washing machine to clean itself. It asks you for permission to have third parties process and analyze your data no less than **8 times**. Ridiculous. I bet it will keep on asking until you give up. Also it is probably selling my data anyhow. Bah.

Recently I presented over at TU Delft on the Science of Security. I've now published this lecture as audio and as text with lots of slides. Learn all about radar, stealth, penicillin, hydrogen bombs & my thoughts on how in Europe we have no good avenues for doing military tech research, and how this could end up badly. And a humble suggestion for EU and NATO what to do.

This "Proposal for a Regulation on the establishment of European Business Wallets" contains the strongest worded sovereignty demand of any recent regulation I've seen. It demands that wallet providers not be under third-party country or third -party entity "control". But I don't know what "control" denotes in this context :

Anytime you see Microsoft or any US company state the CLOUD Act is not such a big deal for Europe, do ask them if they can reassure us on FISA 702 and EO12333 as well. You will not get an answer. Here @nprofile…k4zw sets it out nicely: https://edri.org/our-work/promises-unkept-the-eu-us-data-privacy-framework-under-fire/

European thinkers and policy makers are acting and talking as if the US federal government and courts are still "normal", or will soon be so again. They will not, and we should update our world view. Secondly, when we discuss data retention, we often do not specify that this could be a 24/7 location database of all EU phones and cars. If that is the goal, everyone should be super clear about that: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/hello-europe-joe-biden-is-gone/

On my way to Brussels to do two of the last three talks I’m doing this year. I think I did over 50 presentations this year, mostly on digital autonomy. Only one talk left in December and then I’m calling it a year. I hope!

@nprofile…qhz3 Hi Patrick - Dutch Parliament just passed a motion demanding that the government change its position to "against" for that vote. Government almost always follows such motions. But not always!

This is a very worthwhile analysis of the recent Latombe ruling on the validity of the EU-US Privacy Framework. In short, it is a strange ruling that most definitely is *not* #Schrems III: https://www.europeanlawblog.eu/pub/20d2hhrr/release/1

As part of a weird week I got to present at my old university yesterday, where I never did graduate, making it a special honour to address such a large crowd of wise people. Including one of my former professors even! Also this week, a visit to Microsoft Brussels HQ (for a conference). I'm calling it a day right now.

Preparing my talk over at Delft University tomorrow evening (you can still sign up here https://vvtp.nl/article/symposium-info2 ). I'll be presenting on the role of science in our (military) security. And I found out today that the Wassenaar Arrangement has this astounding logo:

Yesterday I attended the @nprofile…lymm 25th anniversary event, which was tremendous. When we started PowerDNS back in 2000, I could not have dreamed that 25 years later it would be such a big thing. As a founder who has moved on, attending such an event is an emotional roller coaster. (continues)
