I'm stoked for farmers, ranchers, and business owners to start accepting Bitcoin as money.
Of course, in the traditional sense, I could buy some goods at a farmers market stall with sending sats from my wallet to their wallet, if they accept Bitcoin.
But there isn't a dedicated Bitcoin POS that these businesses could use.
That's why I created Plaza BTC. It's a sovereign non-custodial Bitcoin Point of Sale in your pocket. An app. Connect your wallet or self-host and start accepting sats in person. Track your sales and inventory. Own your business's identity and data with Nostr log-in. For customers, it's a discovery map to find Bitcoin Businesses to use your sats to purchase goods.
I wanted the Bitcoin Circular Economy to exist in the Bay Area in California, so I went out of my way to create these sovereign tools for businesses to use.
Steak N Shake is a dope pioneer with accepting Bitcoin (I wonder what POS they're using lol). Square is kinda there, but they custody your Bitcoin if you use it. Whereas, with Plaza BTC, you custody your own Bitcoin as the sats always land in your wallet. It's designed this way on purpose.
Own your money. Own your identity. Own your data. Own your business.
Download Plaza BTC on ios or Android. Start accepting Bitcoin for your business in person.
I will buy bottles of Peony Lane Wine in person if you start using Plaza BTC and if you give me your feedback on it.
Peace

thats so sick! I love to see more bitcoin only businesses. im definitely down to cop some raw honey and spend some sats.
also, i made something for you and for all bitcoin businesses. i created a sovereign noncustodial bitcoin lighting point of sale app. if you ever sell your honey in person at farmers market or something, you now have a full Bitcoin POS in your pocket. It's called Plaza BTC and its live on the ios app store, google play store, and zapstore. its free and has zero fees forever. that way more and all sats go to your wallet. i think we're all sick of fees and having a 3rd party hold our money and even having to wait to receive your money from them is insane or even having to pay more fees to get it lightning quick. what i created routes around all of this. sorry square @nprofile…73pd lol

This is a good question. Let me separate two things it runs together.
Custodial means a third party holds your funds and can move them without you (and can lose them, freeze you, or get hacked). Noncustodial means you hold the keys and the funds. With NWC you point Plaza at your own wallet. The sats are received and held there. Plaza never takes custody, never sees your keys, can't move your money, and the connection is scoped to specific permissions and revocable at any time. So in the precise sense of the word it's noncustodial, and that's true whether the client is open or closed.
Now the fake QR attack you describe is real, but it's an integrity concern, not a custody one. Here's why it doesn't break custody. The invoice is minted by your own wallet via NWC, and your wallet, not the app, is the source of truth on whether it was paid. If a malicious POS showed an attacker's invoice instead, that invoice would never settle to you: lookup_invoice returns unpaid, your balance doesn't move. The theft is immediately visible at the wallet. The screen was never the authority; your ledger is. (It's also not unique to Plaza. A compromised Square terminal could misdirect a payment too. The universal fix is the merchant verifying receipt, which NWC makes trivial.)
And here's the part worth sitting with: open source alone wouldn't actually prevent substitution. Unless you compile it yourself or verify a reproducible build hash against the source, the binary from any app store can differ from the published code. So "closed source equals custodial" collapses two separate questions, custody of funds and integrity of the client, into one. They aren't the same.
What actually shrinks integrity trust: open protocols you can inspect on the wire and swap clients on, reproducible builds you can verify, and a design that keeps the wallet as the source of truth so tampering is detectable. Plaza runs on open protocols end to end (Lightning, Nostr, Blossom), so you're never locked into my client. Point that same NWC connection at any compatible POS and your wallet behaves identically.
Happy to walk the full NWC invoice flow if you want to poke at it.

"Normal and boring" is the right bar. When the kid at the register doesn't even notice, you've basically won.
But the only custodial part of what you described was the rails underneath, not the experience on top. Square bundled those together; they don't have to be. You can get the exact same tap-and-go with the sats landing straight in your own wallet, nothing to convert, nobody in the loop who can flip the toggle off.
That 5% you go custodial on for convenience is exactly the gap I built with Plaza to close — a non-custodial Lightning POS that feels just as boring and normal, except it's your keys. Makes the whole 100% p2p.
You clearly get it, so I'd value your read. plaza btc live on the ios app store and the @nprofile…6kep for android

2026-06-18 16:49:15 GMT

Every time you take a card payment, someone else holds your money first. A processor skims a cut, settles in days, and can freeze or close your account whenever it decides.
Convenience, but also permission.
I built an alternative. And it goes beyond just taking payments.
Plaza: a Bitcoin point of sale that runs on Nostr and Lightning.
Create an invoice. Your customer pays over Lightning with a quick scan or tap. The sats land straight in your own wallet. A signed receipt is published to Nostr. No processor ever touches the money.
Your keys. Your funds. Your identity.
Sovereign by Design
🔑 Noncustodial: payments settle to your own wallet over Nostr Wallet Connect. Plaza never holds your sats.
⚡ Zero fees, forever: no processor cut, no per sale skim. It is written into Plaza’s founding documents.
🟣 Identity you own: your merchant profile, relays, and storefront are Nostr events you can take anywhere.
🧾 Verifiable receipts: every receipt is Schnorr signed and stored on Blossom. Anyone can verify it.
🗺️ Open discovery: merchants appear on a shared map through BTCMap. No gatekept directory, no pay to rank.
🔓 No backdoor: every protocol is open and transparent. Nothing hidden, nothing to trust blindly.
Plaza is live today:
📱 Android: on Zapstore now, signed and verifiable, no gatekeeper. Google Play in review. https://zapstore.dev/apps/com.plazabtc.merchant
🍎 iOS: live on the App Store. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/plaza-btc/id6760211345
📋 Whitepaper: published CC0, its SHA256 hash anchored on GitHub, Archive.org, and Nostr.
Beyond one shop
Every Plaza merchant is a node in a Bitcoin economy that does not ask permission. A customer pays, the sats move straight to the merchant, and the receipt lives on open infrastructure both sides can verify. No processor deciding who gets to transact. That is the whole point.
Everything is free. If Plaza earns its place in your business, you can zap or support at plazabtc.com
Live now on Zapstore. Zero fees forever. Your money, your keys, your plaza.
Created with love in Oakland, California.

Customers can also use it to discover merchants, view their catalog, get directions, save their favorite merchants, and connect their wallet to pay them, if they so choose. After paying a merchant, there’s a qr code that is a blossom receipt.
Is this basically a nostr client? It may be so.

hey man, thanks for sharing. i actually just built the answer to this. it is a noncustodial POS built on bitcoin, lightning, and nostr. it's called Plaza BTC. it's live on the ios app store right now. android version coming soon. hardware terminal coming soon.
with the Plaza BTC app it's simple. you download the app and you're in customer mode. you see a map of the world around you and you could businesses around that accept bitcoin. this is customer mode and you could sign in with your Npub or create a new one on the app as customer. it works like the yelp app. you could find bitcoin businesses around you and pay from the app if you connect your wallet, if you wanted to. you could also save your favorite bitcoin businesses to your favorites list. you also have a history of purchases you made if you connected your wallet and paid the merchant in person.
in the settings tab, you could become a merchant and enter merchant mode where you'll find a full point of sale, where you could charge customers. you could also create a catalog of items and customize it too. that way you just press a button for "coffee" and then "medium" or "large" and "extra shot" and then you could give the customer the option to tip you. and then lastly, you scan a qr code or tap to pay. the customer then sees a final qr code at the success screen which is their receipt. you also have a copy of this in your sales tab on the app in merchant mode. there is also an analytics tab. as a merchant, you could just sign in with your npub or create a new one, publish your location on the Plaza Map, which is also connected with BTC Map. You could also connect your lightning wallet, connect your wallet via NWC, or self host.
This is the first sovereign and noncustodial Bitcoin/lightning POS. There are zero fees forever. This is not a promotional run like Square where they are custodial and have zero fees until the end of this year.
Let me know what you think and what you would like to see and I will work on it.
Android app coming soon. Physical hardware terminal coming soon.

this is why I built plaza. its sovereign commerce infrastructure. zero fees forever for customers and merchants. Merchants now can turn their iPhone or iPad into a full pos and accept bitcoin payments that go straight to their wallet via the plaza app. Plaza is non custodial and never holds anyone's key and does not touch anyone's money, it is purely business tools and create invoices. you could also sign in with your nsec or create a new one on the app. customers could discover bitcoin merchants on the plaza map as well and also connect their wallet to the app to pay merchants via lightning and nwc.
plaza is fully sovereign and enables customers and merchants to be fully sovereign. customers and merchants own their identity, data, keys, money, and business.
plaza exists because publicly traded companies that enable lightning/bitcoin payments can never fully commit to a protocol that eliminates its fee revenue such as fiat processing fees and being the custodian to merchant's funds.
They will never cannibalize that. Plaza has no such conflict. Bitcoin is the foundation, not a feature.
