Speedhike/Trailrun. Due to a delay for the connecting Postauto I replanned whilst sitting in the train. Instead of Lütispitz I ascended Hochalp and Spicher.
Perfect weather, nice views to Lake constance and Alpstein. There were less hikers than expected on the trails.

We (a friend and my two older kids) wanted to climb at Brüggler yesterday but we went to Grimsel due to rainy conditions in Glarus on short notice.
Weather was nice. I started the short 20min hike to our starting point full of self confidence and managed to completely misread the map (I was there at other climbing sectors several times and was convinced to know where to go). So we hiked up to the end of our planned climb 😅. (Reminder to myself: altitude information is there for a reason 😆)
After that more than one hour detour we started our climb at 12:20 with the time in mind. For the upcoming 10 pitches, we calculated worst case each pitch 30min, so no further time to slack.
To our surprise no one else opted for that climb. All others chose the neighbouring "Foxie".
According to the topo "King Albert“ has most pitches rated between 4b and 5a. The last two are rated 3a and 2c.
The route is very beginner friendly with bolts at least every 3m. If you are used to slab climbing, trusting the grip of your feet and are comfortable with just leaning against the wall without holds you'd probably down rate the grade of the climb.
We rushed up the 10 pitches in just 1h 40min without even realising we were that fast.
We barely needed our hands in 4 pitches and just set a few quickdraws there for safety.
All in all an ideal multi pitch route for multi pitch beginners or for everybody who wants to train ones trust in feet with great views to Grimsel and Gelmerhörner.
Our personal conclusion of the day: Rapid rope handling was far more exhausting than climbing.

Ja.

We departed at 6:15. Myself as the guide, my son and a friend of mine. The friend of mine was never on a glacier before and is not used to scrambling so I planned with plenty of spare time. I defined 11am for the latest return point.
We were slow but well within the predefined time frame. The glacier is almost snow free with several crevascres, however it's an easy glacier, mostly almost flat. The final scrambling up to the summit I just did with my son, my friend decided to wait for us as he didn't feel confident enough to do the final scrambling. So we just spent a few minutes at the summit enjoying the views.
Back at the hut we refilled and descended back to Curaglia.
All in all a little bit more than 800m ascend and almost 2000m descent.
Back home at 22:20 - exhausted but happy.

We departed from Winterthur by train at 6:11 and arrived at 10 in Curaglia.
From there it's an easy hike up to the 'Medelser hut' - 7.5km and almost 1200m EG.
Most challenging was the heat but we arrived early and enjoyed cake, coffee and after that some beer.
The Dinner was really good with soup and salad as starters, the main course and even dessert.
At 10 everybody was in bed and tried to sleep.
As we were the only group that targeted Piz Medel and wanted to get up early, we prepared everything beforehand to not disturb the hikers that wanted to sleep a little bit longer. We just needed to grab our sleeping bag and head outside of the room at 5:20.

I just returned from the climbing gym with my son. Our first time rope climbing together due to our weight difference. We tested our newly acquired mammut assist belay resistor and are both very happy with it. Almost no resistant whilst pulling the rope for the lead climber and according to my son he would have been able to hold me with his pinky finger.

I organised a little outdoor adventure for my two younger kids.
My youngest had requested for:
- sleeping under the stars
- short hike
- sun set visible
- milky way visible
- sunrise visible
After studying the maps, I found a spot:
- small cablecar brought us up to 2000m
- a short 3.5km hike
- a plateau not visible from the hiking trail
- free view westwards
- north and eastwards after climbing up a little bit
The weather was more wet than hoped for, but we had a nice rainbow, the milky way after 10 in the evening and a great sunrise.

Finally holidays. So it's best to do what you like. Today's choice was a trail run in Toggenburg. Due to the heat and humidity I decided to start early and do more descent than ascent. I started from Arvenbüel ascended the Flügespitz, descended to Starkenbach and finished in Stein. I treated myself to "Schlorzifladen", house made Sorbet, coffee and "Sure Moscht" at the local coffee. A must visit if you happen to be nearby.

I am old enough to be absolutely fine with a bad day. I just hiked several parts.
Besides passing through some scratchy blackberries it's fairly easy from a technical perspective.

I spent a really wonderful day hiking with my son. We started in Weglosen ascended the steep woods at Leiteren, climbed up to the summit of Druesberg. There we were lucky enough to see a gryphon vulture pass by just a few metres beneath us.
After a short break and enjoying the views we went further to Forstberg and followed the ridge down to the restaurant Stärnen. After a short refresher we speeded back down to Weglosen to catch the last Postauto back home.

Today my wife and I did a little hike at the Toggenburg area and listened to a youth classic orchestra afterwards.
At the first part of the hike we visited with several other tourists the Thur waterfalls. After that, the higher up we went the more lonesome it became. Today we absolutely enjoyed the astonishing contrasts of the blooming meadows, the fresh green of the trees and the white of the fresh fallen snow.
Back at the valley we listened to a classic concert in the church of Alt St. Johann. Round about 15 youths and our eldest had intensively trained for the last four days presented the outcome of their effort.

We departed by car very early at 4:30 and drove to Tschamut, the last village before the road to Operalppass is closed in Winter. There we mounted our Skis and ascended the Piz Cavradi by its north ridge. It was absolutely lonesome up to the summit. The short downhill to the Maighels alpine hut was on enjoyable Sulz.

First we ascended near Firenstökli. After lunch break we skied back to the ski resort and used the infrastructure for several off piste rides. Great to have motivated kids who pushed me to ski down the steepest parts with them as the grand finale.

I guided a group of three families, 3 adults and 4 kids, to the Frümsellücke.
Start at 6:30 at Winterthur railway station.
The temperatures were sweatening yet the snow in the upper parts still frozen.
The kids did it really well and we reached our "summit" well within the planned time frame. After some lunch we enjoyed skiing down. Thanks to the ski ressort we were able to ski down to the valley just 50m before the bus stop.
We returned tired, yet relaxed and contented at 16:45 at Winterthur. A great day spent!

First trailrun with poles this year. Quite slow and short but I just had too many infections the past 8 weeks for proper training.
The weather conditions were great, just warm enough for running in shorts, so the cap and sleeves stuffed in my backpack wouldn't have been necessary.

A friend and I enjoyed our skitour from Richisau to Silberen yesterday. We started just before sun rise under a cloudy sky. The view on the summits was as great as expected. We were lucky to still find some nice powder in between the other tracks as everyone is channeled within a corridor for wildlife protection and the tour is quite popular.
Back at the car at 12:15.

Finally on skis.
We ascended from Amden up to the Summit of Gulmen. It had just enough snow for the ascend. The Fön made the snow on the south west face vanish completely. But the descent started with very nice Sulz, a real pleasure. Down to Stein the snow was very rough. Respect for the kids who managed to ski down. Funny enough we met a group of the SAC Winterthur. Nice chats on our way back to Winterthur.

Above 2000m compact powder, below 1800m quite wet and heavy snow, very power draining skiing.

After a twelve day running break due to work load and family matters I had time for a long run today. The weather was rainy, the trails were partly very slippery.
I spent some time studying the map, did some minor detours, got stuck once as the trail disappeared into impassable brambles (ouch and some swearing 😅) and I was soaked completely twice.
Over all a smooth and enjoyable run, except for my back killing me between km 8 and 11. Thankfully the ache disappeared after that.

With a day delay some photos from my trailrun yesterday.
I started in Glasenbach (N°10, Zistelrundweg), ascended the Gaisberg (N°04), descended it half way (N°10, Gaisberg Rundweg) and finally ran down near the nice Felberbach creek to Aigen.
After the first 2 kilometers I realized my condition was worse than expected as I started slightly nauseous. I made a 15min break and my pulse didn't drop below 80. Very uncommonly. After the break and further slowing down I felt better. However after being home I took a shower and had to go straight to bed with a serious nausea.
I had much sleep and feeling happily fine again, hence no sports today.

My son reencountered his Wanderlust in Liguria. So back in Switzerland we did a hike from Unterwasser up to the summit of Zuestoll and back yesterday. On the summit we had great views. I am quite sure even the Ortler in South Tyrol was visible.
The last part of the trail is marked blue-white and classified as T4-. At the most difficult parts there are ropes and some metal steps. It was quite muddy and slippery.
At our way down a group of hikers behind us managed to send down stones twice. That was the most dangerous part. Easy to reach (cable car) area and a rather short ascent from the cable car (850m) lead to hikers that are neither fit nor experienced enough to do that hike in a safely manner.
Nothing the less a well spent day for the both of us.

2/2 After a night with rain and snow at the mountain hotel Tiefenbach we had to adjust our plans for day two. The planned ascent of the 'Klein Furkahorn’ over the south west ridge was not safe with strong winds, lots of fog and fresh snow. So we decided to do a hike instead. We ascended towards Albert Heim hut and followed the blue white marked 'Nepali trail' to the Sidelen hut. On the way we spotted an impressive bearded vulture that circled up less than 200m away.
After a coffee and 'Urner Pastete' one of our group did a dive into the alpine lake before we descended toward Furkapass.

I spent the weekend near Furka with SAC Winterthur. We started on Saturday from the Furka Pass to climb the 'Gross Muttenhorn' traversing the remaining parts of the 'Muttgletscher' from east to west. After that we climbed up rather steep rubble and ascended the Muttenhorn over its west ridge. (There is also the option to bypass the most difficult parts on the ridge using an unmarked T4+ trail) Nice views down into Wallis, the valley still green, autumn at the middle of the mountains and the first signs of winter at the tops.
Rather scary are the obvious and partly huge rifts on the ridge. The whole mountain ridge is in motion. The permafrost is gone.

I went on a mountaineering tour with the senior group of the SAC Winterthur. Our goal was to ascent the Piz Medel.
Day 1: Start in Zurich train station to Disentis and with the Postauto to Curaglia. 1200m ascent to the 'Medelser Hütte'. We were lucky and our group had a private room. First time for eating 'Tannenspitzensirup', sirup made from young for needles.
Day 2: Wake up call at 5 and depart at 6. A well marked trail guided us through the scree fields to the glacier. We mounted the crampons, waited for one person to adjust their crampons and ascended the glacier. If you avoid the steep part, as we did, the glacier is fairly easy an just at the beginning and at the very end a little bit steeper. Unfortunately we decided for the east ridge. However the eastern ascend was too challenging for some of the participants and it took too much time to look for a doable path, so we decided to withdraw. A good decision moreover as the crampons of one of the other participants completely failed at the descent and we lost a lot of time. After some discussions (person didn't want to take mine) and some try and error I managed to fixate the crampons with zip ties for the last part on the glacier.
Learning for the club guides: Double check the material of the participants you was not on that kind of tour with before the tour. The very same learning I had myself this winter, so it will probably be explicitly added to our club guide best practices.
After an afternoon soup (or cake) at the hut we descended back to Curaglia.

Due to the forecasted thunderstorms I moved my trailrun/speed hike further north. I started in Lichtensteig, climbed two rather steep hills and finished in Degersheim. Not as good views as I had hoped for as high trees blocked most of the time the scenery. It was quite steamy, I was bitten by a horse fly and a tick. Nothing the less a nice run.

Yesterday my wife, my eldest and I visited a Craig near Grimsel. I had my first outdoor fall 😅
My daughter and I did a three pitch climb. 4b, 4b and 5a. However we missed the correct start of the last pitch without realizing it for the first 10 m. Then I realized I had chosen a 6a traverse...
Just before the stand my not so good foot technic did its part and I slid down several meters before swinging to the last hold. Nothing bad happened. After the slide I was able to switch to the correct route, which was a real nice climb. The final abseiling was great..

@nprofile…843t Nothing in particular. I just try to strengthen my stamina mainly for the winter season.
And just before winter I do a competitive trail half marathon for keeping my motivation up 😁
But in general hiking / climbing / mountaineering is more fun if you have a good base fitness. To keep that up is my goal.

On the summit. From the second summit of Brisi to the east.

Today I spend a day alone in the mountains. Planned was to go with my wife and son, sadly both of them opted out this morning. However I had a meeting to have a look at a private hut there. After said meeting I hiked up the Brisi. On my way up I picked up some firewood for the upcoming "Nationalfeiertag". Mid ascent I felt that I might have been a little over confident by picking up four woods. But in the end it went well. A tougher training session than expected 😁
Luckily there was not too many people on the upper trails and I was happy to have the summit for myself for more than a quarter. Sometimes it's just the best to enjoy the views in silence.

My wife and I hiked in the Toggenburg area yesterday. The steady but steep ascents for the first 600m of elevation up to the "Risipass" is a nice training ground for "do not start too fast".
On the top of our tour we had better views than expected. From Lake Constance in the north to the Rhine valley and the Austrian alps in the east and to the Churfirsten in the south. For a short period of time even the Bernese Alps were visible. The light rain whilst our descent didn't matter except it added further humidity. However it was a most welcome excuse to enjoy the locally manufactured ice cream at the Café in Stein.

Falling stones are scary and sometimes you just need a big potion of good luck, which you thankfully had that day.

We had a nice morning run in and above the 'Töss' valley. We started in Bauma, run up to Sternenberg, small trails back down to Tüfenbach, followed by a steep ascent up to the summit of Hörnli. There we tokk our time for a short break with 'Nussgipfeli and suure Most ohni' ( Croissant with hazelnut cream and alcohol free cider) and time to enjoy the views. Finally the very fun part of running down the very steep trail to Steg.
Along our trail we discovered some very nice places and even had the pleasure of taking a short but very refreshing shower.

On my way to the starting point of my trailrun training Sunday with a friend.
My friend wished for less than 1000m EG so I planned accordingly.
We targeted for a rather relaxed run from Bauma to Steg with two hill climbs.

My wife discovered the first edelweiss of the year. We did a hike above the Rhine valley near Buchs and due to the intensively used meadows around there it was totally unexpected. Furthermore we saw a snow grouse and two 'Parnassius apollo' butterflies alongside less seldom seen animals.
We started early and finished our hike two hours before the first thunderstorms appeared.

My wife and I had planned for a hike today, but she canceled. So I hastily replanned for a trail run / speed hike and took the train to Nesslau. The first kilometers up went well, but the the heat and the humidity kicked in. I was forced to slow down, slow down more and even more. Despite refilling water twice I was shot out just at the second summit. Lucky me I found a fountain three kilometers later.
Lots of sweat, lots of hiking, more breaks than usual and a slow run back to the valley.
