New leak about #ChatControl 1.0 by the German [@netzpolitik_feed](https://chaos.social/@netzpolitik_feed ):
Council knew they would make trilogue negotiations fail with their uncompromising approach - and they did so out of political calculation. They feared that reducing the scope in the interim derogation (1.0) would set a precedent for the permanent regulation (Chat Control 2.0).
The topic remains on the agenda for EP plenary for next week (26 March) and it seems the vote on the EP position could be repeated:

#ChatControl 1.0 is supposed to expire in April, but the European Commission wants to allow companies the indiscriminate scanning of private messages for two more years.
For multiple years at #FreedomNotFear, participants discussed that this is disproportionate mass surveillance and should be stopped. Activists are now calling on members of the European Parliament to reject the extension proposed by the Commission. What about you?

#ChatControl proposal failed in the Council of the EU again today! 🎉
Hungary tried to use its presidency to shame critical governments into agreeing to the proposed mass surveillance by forcing ministers to explain themselves during live-streamed public session. This plan backfired:
several countries took the floor to confirm on the record that this would undermine #cybersecurity, attack #encryption with #ClientSideScanning and violate fundamental rights!

The Hungarian government under Orban currently has the presidency in the Council of the EU. Even though they know from two sessions of Coreper II last week, that there was no majority for #ChatControl, they scheduled a public vote and apparently plan to use this to pressure and shame any opposing government.

We have concluded this year's #FreedomNotFear with a visit to the European Parliament. Some of the participants further used the time in Brussels to schedule individual meetings with members of the European Parliament to raise awareness about the topics we discussed during the weekend.

Like any barcamp, #FreedomNotFear is a self-organizing (un)conference. However, it is safe to say that this year's #FnF24 would not have happened without @npub12kd…eljj, @npub1l65…tz2h and Tobias. They have been planning this event for months.

As @npub1vt6…u84h pointed out, the answers of Commissioner-designate for "Internal Affairs and Migration", Magnus #Brunner, to a first set of written questions were disappointing when it comes to #DataRetention and #ChatControl.

The Hungarian presidency in the Council of the EU has proposed another text for the #ChatControl file. It is to be discussed by the law enforcement working party in Council on Monday (23 September).
Experts widely criticise Chat Control e.g. for attacking #E2EE, IT-security and violating (European) fundamental rights.
The #GlobalEncryptionCoalition now warns that the Hungarian proposal fails to resolve the problems of the regulation and calls on governments to reject it:
