A catechist told my parents that I was ‘a hopeless case’ because I was asking too many difficult questions whose answer (from a Catholic point of view) always ended up being a variant of “you must have faith”, and it was apparent that I didn’t find it satisfactory. I was 7 years old. I’m not a religion-survivor because I was religion-rejected first. 😅 npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori Has anyone thought about making a Pokémon-themed CAPTCHA and calling it PICAPTCHA? 😁 npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori Three quick things about the new MacBook Neo: 1) The introductory video is really fun to watch. 2) It appears Apple is still capable of making a laptop WITHOUT A FUCKING NOTCH. But still, it was possible. See here for example: https://osxdaily.com/2013/01/18/add-dashboard-widgets-desktop-mac-os-x/ npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…6kk0 Dashboard was better in every way. The widgets all had their dedicated layer that appeared over your workspace whenever you invoked it. But it was flexible enough that you could (if you wanted) put one of more widgets on the desktop. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori This is a 1976 Audi 100 LS. The highlighted part has been one of the most disregarded aspects of UI since devices have become impressively capable. And Liquid Glass is no different. “Let’s make all these pointless transparency effects, reflections and refractions — because we can and because these Systems-on-a-Chip can.” https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/905/579/832/929/925/original/e25efb4177842a0c.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori Apple, 2013: (image) Apple today: Let’s make a glass envelope for Mail. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/900/444/896/780/952/original/a17581b7db8fde99.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…ee4l This interface mimics old paper planners, where coloured tabs were plastic and attached to the separator sheet. I like that each tab ‘digs’ a little into each section, just like it happened on those planners. And this is IBM’s OS/2 Warp (1994-1996). Not the best UI in the history of computing, but with a lot of nice little touches here and there. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…ee4l I’m also having a hard time distinguishing the apps that are opened here. I remember when tabs looked like real tabs. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/877/336/805/040/105/original/431195180f063927.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori It’s funny how clarity and immediacy work. To me, “WiFi 6” is meaningless, while e.g. “802.11ac” or “802.11b” immediately tells me everything about the wireless speeds in question. Similarly, as much as “iMac18,2” and “MacBookPro15,2” designate specific machines with accuracy, I still prefer things like “early 2008 MacBook” or “2013 27-inch iMac”, and I hate I always have to look this stuff up in Mactracker every time someone uses this denomination (e.g. nerds and eBay sellers). npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori iPhoto on iOS 6 — Some tools and effects. iPhoto wasn’t a perfect app, and some things could have been a bit better; certain icons were somewhat hard to understand and didn’t communicate what they were for with great immediacy. On the other hand, this kind of skeuomorphism and visual design was good. There are labels: you *know* what each ‘brush’ does. And the Effects samples give you a glimpse of how the various effects will look. It’s also amazing how feature-packed iPhoto was. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/790/767/596/974/429/original/8558149db326598d.png https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/790/767/762/234/118/original/fab502e0886c4af2.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori It’s so damn ironic, painfully ironic that in an era before retina displays we had this gorgeous, super-detailed Mail icon, and now… this other fucking abomination. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/784/758/220/073/007/original/51290f6194dd9080.png https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/784/758/382/487/497/original/3b09219cf2a95ff2.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…rnt9 The espresso shot glasses. You may not like the old skeuomorphic design, or the Noteworthy font, but it was fun. A little make-believe for the eyes, the fun pretence of jotting down notes in a digital notebook. The modern implementation is sterile. And that default font may be more elegant and sober than Noteworthy, but I find its characters’ shapes too homogeneous to be easily readable. And the future is more of this with some glassy controls thrown over it. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/722/605/060/348/982/original/12c9f7471872a031.png https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/722/605/163/472/387/original/efcddb732a3c1713.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…ee4l @nprofile…aduy > Apple simply says icons should be constructed “in a simple, unique way with a minimal number of shapes” on “a simple background, such as a solid colour or gradient”. Not only is this the recipe for blandness, it’s also borderline contradictory. Like, “Make a unique dish using a minimal number of simple ingredients”. While it’s possible to make a few different dishes using just two or three things, you touch the ceiling of uniqueness and variety pretty damn soon. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…6kk0 @nprofile…azkn I like the Preview icon of this era (this is from Tiger, I don’t remember when it changed), because there’s enough context around it to understand the loupe’s function. (Yes, I opened Preview’s own .icns file with Preview 😀) https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/677/133/745/751/469/original/1900a165410a0fad.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…6kk0 I, too, have noticed this! And then, of course, you also find those with that “You’re holding it wrong” attitude. Like, it’s unfathomable that Mac OS is to blame here, you must have done something wrong. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori Disappointingly, I confess, feedback on my article on Liquid Glass so far has been scarce. The involuntarily funny hate-comment I got via email was a simple “Adapt or die.” There’s a form of adapting these haters never think about. You can adapt by exploring other platforms and tools, get out of your comfort zone, and stop using an ecosystem you don’t like anymore, whether visually or functionally. If Apple hallucinates a terrible Mac OS UI, I don’t *have* to get accustomed or adapt to it. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori Want to see depth? Transparency isn’t the way. Transparency means thin layers, which convey shallowness/thinness. Very faint separation. In iOS 6, depth was achieved through ‘material’ textures and by notably blurring the elements that had to lose focus, in a sort of exaggerated camera depth-of-field effect. Look what happens when I select a folder in iOS 6 — you can clearly see what’s in focus and what is not. You can perceive depth. It’s almost tangible. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/660/411/935/688/817/original/5ab0d4fe62377963.png https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/660/412/090/285/594/original/da07664c0618b957.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori The Dock (and plenty other things) in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger was already perfect. Sigh. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori These look like “More…” menus, but they’re actually semaphore controls for each window. *facepalm* Come on. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/654/792/070/221/458/original/e37d9b340ce7847e.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…6kk0 @nprofile…azkn But *has* this UI/UX carnage ended? I don’t think so. Translucency everywhere with so little contrast is worse than flat design to me. npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori LOOK AT THIS SHIT!!! At first I used both search engines because DDG was still lacking, but nowadays I think it can stand on its own. This may have been the era of skeuomorphic design, but it was also the era of no-nonsense UI with clear and intuitive presentation and very low visual ambiguity. Every control in the main interface is self-evident. You know what each element does. The playhead on the top is clearly visible, as is artist/album/song info. Opening an album shows a clear list of tracks and a 'speaker' icon to show what's playing. The lockscreen view has no controls, but it's cool nonetheless. https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/530/418/343/684/181/original/149d058ba3d75418.png https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/530/418/489/707/509/original/71d0aacdc1f9ab59.png https://cdn.masto.host/appdotnet/media_attachments/files/114/530/418/705/587/485/original/d73a4b0fdd45228d.png npub1360yqpmmrumjznkjhcxhldh7hpf3mdw9tjkh787uvshpsvd29y5qwsuerh Riccardo Mori @nprofile…ee4l 2010 - Alice in Wonderland (Teapots) 2011 - Serenity (I'm a huge Firefly/Serenity fan) 2020 - Blueprint (the 'matte' one) 2020 - Shippou 2021 - Quantum Foam (all of them) 2024 - Overlook Hotel (a classic!) 2025 - Go Away Green (all of them) These are all favourites, that I keep on rotation on most of my Mac/PCs.
