It turns out this time its not even a bug, it is intended behaviour! #Element apparently simply doesn't support #Firefox ESR, which is what I use on #Debian, so I guess I just won't use #Matrix on my laptop anymore.
One of the devs argues they cannot support a browser release that is one year old. Why are modern developers so scared of stable software? Why does everything need to be new and changed? It's so dumb...

What do people around the #Fediverse use for uptime monitoring of their services? I'm currently using #UptimeKuma, but as of this post it only supports use of an #SQLite database. This is inconvenient when I want to move it into my #Kubernetes cluster. Additionally, I have gotten quite a few alerts caused by database timeouts, which (as far as I could find) are best remedied by "just drop some records so your database isn't as big", which seems sub-optimal as a solution.
Any recommendations welcome!

The more progressive people become, the more they seem to care about selfish gratification at the cost of anything. But that's just a very personal observation with no scientific studies to back it up.

In "modern" times, however, women just go on tindr to get a cheap fuck. They start OnlyFans to become "independent women" rather than look for love with a single partner. Casual flirting with a girl that doesn't feel like you're worth her time is sexual harassment. Its generally not worth the risk to even try.
I agree that men could do more to sway a potential partner, but I don't feel like that's really the only problem in today's dating world.

Seeing as how an earlier #Firefox annoyance was fixed for me today, let me ask if this other thing that bothers me can be fixed.
When I allow a website to send notifications in Firefox, the notification window is ridiculously ugly and their official docs don't seem to give any means to make them less ugly. Preferably, I'd have them use my already running notification daemon. Is this possible? If not, can I at least customize them to be less gross?

@npub14w3…9vjx Lean meat. Sometimes stores have big discounts on meat that's about to expire soon, then I'll buy that and just cut off the fatty bits myself, turn it into thin slices, and have super cheap beef jerky for the rest of the week.
As for the kind of animal, so far everything seems to work, beef is obviously the standard, but you can use deer, buffalo, even chicken (though that one was my least favorite).

Stop trying to be the largest instance, and stop supporting those trying to become large instances. Stick to instances hosted by people you know or otherwise trust, and promote the idea of thousands of small servers rather than a couple of huge ones.
Any instance over 200 users is too big.

But then again, why add in so much complexity when we've had mailing lists for several decades? They still work, and they run on anything with minimal requirements. They're already federated, since email is federated by design.
Striving for complexity for complexity's sake seems pretty dumb to me. Using tools that have proven themselves for decades, that inherently support collaboration and decentralization, should be a pretty straightforward task to anyone that dares consider himself a "developer".

Perhaps it is because bikes are usually parked pretty close to where you need to be anyway, so no big trek across a sea of asphalt to get back to your vehicle. Als iemand schrijft over iets waar ik toevallig bekend mee ben, en dat artikel is volledig onzin, kan ik niet vertrouwen dat die persoon over andere onderwerpen wel effectief kan rapporteren.
Daarbij zaten die allemaal al die tijd op gesloten platformen, terwijl de mensen die strijden voor het gebruik van free software al meer dan een decennia roepen dat het echt heel erg dom is om dat te blijven doen. Dit geeft mij een vrij duidelijke boodschap dat vrijheid, openheid, en onafhankelijkheid die mensen absoluut niets boeit.
Ik ben meer benieuwd hoe mensen die de waarden delen die ik net benoemde hierover denken, dat zijn in mijn optiek de mensen die een stuk boeiender (en nuttiger) zijn om naar te luisteren.

Een kortstondige grote groei voor het Fediversum is leuk voor nieuwsartikelen, maar niet per se goed voor het platform. Het is niet gedreven door advertenties en kijkcijfers, het is gedreven door menselijke interactie. Dat werkt een stuk beter als de mensen erheen komen omdat ze het interessant vinden of het concept willen steunen. Deze mensen blijven langer, en zijn ook gewoon interessanter om te hebben dan 10 miljoen mensen die niets meer doen dan cirkeltrekken. Ook zorgt een snelle groei voor meer centralizatie omdat er simpelweg niet genoeg nieuwe servers bij komen om ineens miljoenen mensen extra decentraal te herbergen.
Een langzame maar constante groei is het beste voor het Fediversum. Kennis over wat het is en waarom het beter is dan de gesloten alternatieve platformen zijn een stuk belangrijker. Daar zit onder meer kennis in dat Mastodon niet de eerste, niet de laatste, en zeker niet de enige software is. We hebben al genoeg journalisten die doen alsof het dat wel.

@npub1d8d…tpyc Ervoor zorgen dat deze kennis "geheim" blijft tenzij je echt technisch bent ingesteld is hoe je simpelweg een nieuwe monopolie opzet. Het zou mensen goed doen om te leren dat dit niet geweldig is.
Iets als SoapboxFE heeft zelfs een meer twitter-achtige ervaring, wat het ironisch genoeg nog makkelijker maakt dan Mastodon. Het is ook een stuk simpeler en minder resource heavy dan Mastodon, voor jouw doelgroep juist een stuk interessanter als ik het zo lees.
Verder is mastodon.nl nou ook niet bepaald een kleine server met 8.5k users. Ik zou niet aanraden om instances te promoten die al meer dan 200 gebruikers willen. Tenzij je simpelweg een toekomstige big-tech cartel wilt steunen, zoals ook al bij email gebeurt is.
