Ring Necked Duck Santa Ana NWR Texas by Debra Martz
It was close to the end of our hike at the wildlife refuge & were looking for a connecting trail leading to the parking lot. We had made our way around the Willow Lakes Trail when I looked back & saw this duck so I had to backtrack for a better view. Note the 2 dragonflies over her head!

Bee on Wild Berry Coneflower by Debra Martz Coneflowers attract a large variety of insects and birds. My backyard patch was so busy that I decided to take some macro images of the insects on them. The Skippers were the most numerous followed by the Hairstreak Butterflies and Honey Bees.

We were on the Willow Lakes trail and I had been watching the large variety of waterfowl and shorebirds. Then I heard the unmistakable call of the Kiskadee. I looked around the reeds & finally spotted it high in the trees near the water's edge on the opposite side of where I stood.

Fluffy Colorful Green Jay by Debra Martz
One of my favorites when birding in the Rio Grande Valley is the Green Jay which is found in the tropics but extends its range into southern Texas. It's a colorful bird that can be noisy, yet it becomes challenging to locate when it stays quiet deep in the trees.

Along a trail was an area of fallen trees of which some had been cut to maintain passage. This Curve-billed Thrasher spent a minute or so hopping around possibly in search of insects. Location: Mission, Texas.

It was a pretty cool little museum. I understand, Turkey is not a place you are just passing through on any given day! Sort of out of the way, but we were heading to Quitaque / Caprock Canyon State Park in our RV for several days so we drove back to Turkey one day.
