@npub1wjm…ryn7 @npub1kr9…vpk6 I’ll soonish disappear for several days, so I’m writing this in advance, for you to not think that I’m going to hang myself over a lost match in syougi. The new hard drive, that I got, calls for a major OS upgrade, and I haven’t done one in about four years, believing that the time won’t come sooner than I get a new computer. Heh. Also I’m not sure whether I could be present, due to sleeping away most of the day again. Would be nice if somebody told me the GMT± time!

@npub1n78…87ev If that thing is to be sourced why in the world does it have a shebang, aaaaaa
Yeah, I agree, that it’s a bad idea to barge in with your stuff in the middle of works. And the reason why “set -e” didn’t work is difficult to figure out without seeing the description of die() and the shell options in the initial script, but some reasons may be speculated about:
- using ${var:-another_var} removes the possibility to catch an error here, as the “:-” operator is made exactly to avoid an empty variable triggering an error. A substitution to a string that happens to also be empty doesn’t count as an error (since instead of using a potentially empty value you use substitution, hence you must know what you’re doing)
- the “[[ -z "$*" ]] && die …” construction relies on “die” to perform exit with the “bad” code, since the logical expressions (&&, ||…) lift up the restriction imposed by “set -e”.
Which means that the pipefail never works, because inside the subshell (which is on the left side of the pipe) there’s never an error – thanks to ${…:-…} – and the check on the empty list of arguments (-z "$*") in _eval_user_sequence() is futile because of the logic expression (&&). The die() function should be doing the exit in this situation, but apparently, it cannot?

I guess pipefail will work if you add “set -e” to the beginning of your script. Usually “set -eu” is the bare minimum for a shell script. Otherwise bash behaves more like in an interactive terminal, where a shell isn’t supposed to quite if program errors.

it clearly tells that both variables were empty. And they probably shouldn’t both be empty. Then either there’s no “sequence” line in the pass file or $env_default_sequence doesn’t receive anything/dies early. Are we looking at the same version of the file?

Usually you don’t have to do this, unless you really need a separate copy.
> $env_* variables are actual globals, set in _globals().
I have a suspicion, that they’re in fact not. Try inserting
declare -p env_default_sequence
right after the call to _globals()

@npub1n78…87ev _eval_user_sequence fails on this line
> [[ -z "$*" ]] && die "Error: no sequence set"
because the list of arguments is empty. The call to this function is just above on line 171, where the argument is composed as
> "${uservars[sequence]:-$env_default_sequence}"
Which says “use ${uservars[sequence]} or, if it’s not set or has an empty value, take the value of $env_default_sequence”. Neither variable is set.

Imagine Europeans some two centuries ago (before Europe was invaded) wrapping all their thoughts around Ottomans. Or Crusaders thinking about Abbasids all the time. Or Romans obsessed with Carthaginians. “Be like a Carthaginian to the system!”, a dissatisfied Roman would say (← untrue). If you let the nigger settle so deep down in your conscience, that it takes place of the true origins, on which thought is based, then where are those roots, the bearer of which you claim to be? Was this place just vacant until “nigger” has come? It might be.
