@nprofile…pvn3 I agree. TLV was a nice solution.
Sending, storing, & retrieving metadata via various methods & protocols feels "kuldgy".
Was considering a separate address/wallet for every incoming podcast/split, but that also feels messy, and doesn't solve the episode/VTS needs.
I don't have any "good" ideas. : (

@nprofile…pvn3 Does helipad plan to accept/log/show lnAddress payments?
I don't see an easy solution since you need a web server no negotiate & generate invoices on the fly.
Without feed, episode, & play timestamp (at least) in the payment message, it can't be linked to a podcast/episode/vts.
IPFS Podcasting also needs this info to distribute to the proper IPFS nodes. Without this info, it's just "I got sats".

Under Settings/Advanced there's an option to use Cloudflare DNS. For some reason, I had to turn this *off* to update or install any apps. Could then, turn it back on.
Is it possible Cloudflare is blocking an Umbrel domain? I didn't research any further. Everything appears to be up and running.

Trying to test uninstalling/reinstalling thub, before attempting bitcoind. thub uninstalled, but when I reinstall, it creates the app-data folders, then nothing. Umbrel doesn't think it's installed (but won't install either).
Also tried installing pi-hole (something I never had), but get the same result. app-data folders, but that's all.

This has probably already been said, but if you think a remote node is down check *their* channels with amboss. If all channels are down (red arrows), the node is likely down.
If only your channel is down, then it might be your node.
For example, I'd say boostbot is down.

@nprofile…6746 Yeah, the website isn't the best interface. It started out as a debug tool, to make sure things were working.
Can look into an archive feed, but worry about not having all the extra PC20 features (splits, chapters, album art, etc.).

2024-11-17 00:39:26 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…6746 That's correct. Since I don't modify the RSS, it only contains what is published ("source of truth"). It's the same as the original RSS feed https://feeds.podcastindex.org/pc20.xml with IPFS links to the audio.
But the IPFS website contains episodes back to when the show was first monitored (episode 7). I suppose I could generate an "archive feed", but I only store the enclosures on IPFS. I don't store the transcripts, chapters, splits, or even show notes for old episodes (maybe I should?).

There have been a few users who setup 5-10 VPS nodes interested in earning a larger amount. They did get 5x-10x of the share, but still not enough to "make money".
The concept was always to run a raspberryPi in your basement to support podcasts (and help with distribution).
I recently discovered P4V has gone away, but still lives on IPFS due to listener support. The media and RSS are still available here.

Ok course I miss the live show where you talk about IPFS Podcasting. : (
IPFS Podcasting was never a business model. People started thinking they could generate income by running a node. With 50+ IPFS nodes sharing a split, each node only gets 1/50th of a 3-5% split. More of a "tip" or "thank you" than "income".
My goal for splits was to make sure the calculation is accurate (according to the spec). Any changes to make the spec easier to understand is always preferred.

It appears you're doing that with Ainsley's VTS. It's "legal" in the spec, but I don't know if/how the apps handle it.
The spec also says remotePercentage only applies to remoteItem splits.You have remotePercentage="80" for Ainsley but she's not a remoteItem. I assume the app would ignore the attribute since it doesn't apply.

@npub17d6…v8qz Looks like all the nodes pinned a zero sized file (the old/bad url). Reset the file so they all re-pin again. Looks like it's working now.

@npub1jtm…rxtn @npub1df6…ns3a What was your initial issue with ipfs.io? Something about DNS blacklisting? Was that on your LAN, or something with your ISP?

@npub1df6…ns3a Thanks. I'll look for excessive retries (like I did for James) to see if I can pinpoint a client having problems.

@npub1df6…ns3a @npub12y5…6e36 I haven't caught up listening to PC20.
The clients/nodes are open. https://github.com/Cameron-IPFSPodcasting The website, database, & lightning payment code currently isn't open.
The future gateways would be open. Still have to figure out how to integrate multiple gateways with playback. Random/round-robin, or based on performance/episode availability (or both).

@npub1dft…ta3d I've only ran a Start9 backup once (to test).
You can try running "Actions / Clean Up" to run garbage collection and free up any unpinned space.
That may reduce the amount of data to backup.

Do these red arrows mean they're still negotiating?

There's a "hack" for Umbrel to view your IPFS UI.
https://github.com/Cameron-IPFSPodcasting/podcastnode-Umbrel/issues/3
You can see your bandwidth usage & interpret the spikes as uploads/downloads of episodes.
Kaas shared a screenshot here.

Start9 has a link to the IPFS UI under Properties.

@npub1ln5…xyw6 @npub1jtm…rxtn @npub1df6…ns3a It's hard to tell once you're hosting the content. Think bit-torrent where you're serving chunks of files. When someone requests a file, it's pulled from all the nodes (all it can find) at once. Making it faster than pulling a complete file from one node.

@npub1df6…ns3a @npub1dft…ta3d They're back.
I think there was increased demand for internet in the woods this weekend. My bitcoin node started falling behind, then LND, and boosts.
Was about 30 minutes behind, but caught up on all the IPFS splits.
I'm sure a few never made it to my LND node.

@npub1ln5…xyw6 @npub1df6…ns3a Re-listening to today's show...
Correct all the nodes hosting the file get a portion. I don't think you can know *who* served up the file because it's stored in chunks (like bit-torrent). One playback may pull a chunk from all the nodes. Which makes it faster/more responsive with more nodes.
When you get "too many" nodes, the payouts will be smaller (100 nodes = 1/100th share). You could increase your split ; ) or let them self-regulate. They may un-favorite if only getting 1 sat.

@npub1df6…ns3a @npub1ln5…xyw6 It's not "required", but helpful. Without it, other nodes can't find you as easily. Your peer count reflects how "accessible" your node is.

@npub1dft…ta3d Looks like ~20 nodes couldn't reconnect. Including my Umbrel node. It failed to timeout after 120 seconds (it's been 3.5 hours). Hope it recovers. If not, I'll have to restart the node.

Your last 50 shows (on IPFS) all seem to have requests. Almost like someone is scraping your feed.

@npub1jtm…rxtn @npub1dzn…4dfn Each node does a "wget" to pin the episode. So it probably reports that to op3. I'll have to change it in the next client release. Thanks.
Though, you'll likely only see a few downloads from the nodes (4 per episode at the moment). After that, the podcast players will report their useragent to op3 when they play the file over IPFS.
