Has anybody seen a good writeup of what I am coming to think of Deadline Culture? By which I mean a business culture that structures everything around mostly-artificial deadlines, often with little expectation that they will actually be met.
I think that paradigm used to make sense to me, but I've spent enough time in the Lean world that I only understand actual deadlines now. I like it better, but it's making it hard for me to communicate with people trapped in that paradigm.

Has anybody seen any good articles about vibe coding from addicts in recovery? I see people talking about it being addictive, but in the "gosh I love smoking" style you see from people talking about addictive games. I'd love to see it from the perspective of somebody who deeply understands addiction because they've had to move away from one.

Linux users, a question. Is this just me?
To me, the original bargain with Linux and Unix was that although the quality of the user experience varied, I had the tools to solve any problem I cared about enough to put in the work.
But as I try the latest Ubuntu with things like systemd, snap, and Wayland, I feel like the bargain has changed. Now the UX is still quite uneven, but I no longer have the tools. The power is in the hands of small groups of developers who aren't interested in sharing.
Ring a bell?

In honor of Meta's latest announcement, a thread on 175 years of 3D failure.
Let's first go all the way back to 1851 with the Brewster Stereoscope. No less a person than Queen Victoria was impressed, kicking off a fad that quickly sold over 250,000 units. Turns out it was not the future of photography.

I need to extract certain information from a bunch of images. I'm a Python developer, but know little about this niche. Can somebody suggest particular toolkits to start with?
The problem: The placement of flippers on pinball machines has a rich history. There are thousands of different pinball machines. I would like to identify broad trends and turning points. So I'd like to be able to process photos like this in bulk, spot the flippers, and record their locations relative to the rest of the playfield: https://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=20&picno=38587
I know how to get the raw data (lists of pinball machines, collection of images) but the part I don't know how to tackle is the image processing (selection of best playfield image, compensating for photographer variation, finding the flippers, extracting their position and angle).
If you've done something like this before, what has worked for you? #pinball #python

For the posts in my "LLMs don't actually know anything" thread, I do my best to verify them. These are four that I'm pretty sure used to work but no longer do. That suggests to me that there's some poor team at Google whose job it is to keep track of when people are mocking their "AI" and suppress the bad results.
I think that is hilarious. I would love to know how many individual fixes they've accumulated like this. It reminds me of a competent secretary endlessly covering for an incompetent boss.

@nprofile…0ftr White people in the US have whole deranged mythologies around cities. In Loewen's "Sundown Towns", he traces that mythology back to the sundown town era through suburbanization and white flight. As I recall, in his view the constant is the demonization of "those people", with the form changing over the years to match the new geographies and demographics. With various parts of the news media benefiting from feeding the myths to get white eyeballs for advertisers.

I'm currently experiencing the downstream effects of building software to be general enough to handle many possible futures.
My advice: don't do it! Software usually ends up being specific, and often in ways that can't be foreseen during the initial design phase. Creating something technically general up front is always appealing, but in my experience it means a) the struggle of trying to keep many imaginary use cases in mind, b) the interim cost of doing specific things with the excess generality, and c) then removing the generality later on as the specificity of the true needs becomes clear.
I think the real way to keep code ready for future change is a) close team collaboration, b) acknowledging how much important information won't arrive for months or years, c) domain-driven design, d) good automated tests, and e) merciless refactoring as the team learns more about the real needs.

It occurs to me that a major practical use of "AI" is to shift labor from "writer" to reader. Because "AI" creates content-shaped things, readers have to treat artifacts as if they had sufficient thought put into them. So many problems that would have been discovered if the "writer" had actually done the work are now left to readers to detect and explain. 1/

One of the weird things about hype bubbles is the way something goes from world-changing to forgotten. Apple's Vision Pro, one of the many waves of 3D hype going back to the 1850s, is just on the cusp of that. I saw a lot of people talking it up, often heatedly, but I haven't seen a single admission of error, a single lesson learned. Which means we're no more prepared for the next hype wave.

I'm sure a lot of neurotypicals will soon be on the hunt for The Person at Crowdstrike who just broke the world. It's important to remember that things like this are systemic failures. Many individual mistakes are required for failures like this. The solution isn't to find and punish The Person; it's to make systemic changes so this can't happen again.

Does anybody understand 1960s conceptions of electricity? I'm working on a 1965 Teacher's Pet. Step 1 is what I'd call grounding it; I'm adding a 3-prong cord and grounding the exposed metal. But back then they didn't seem to distinguish between hot and neutral, and didn't have a ground at all, but had something else they called ground. I'm trying to figure out which side of this this should now be the hot side and which the neutral. If it even matters.

@npub129h…y2hs I count at least 5 waves of "stereoscopic 3D is a game changer" innovation going back to the 1850s. Every time so far it evaporates.
My theory is that it's a combination of the wow/novelty factor plus the idea that 3D has to be lots better. Always ignoring that it's cumbersome and that human brains don't need to use two eyes to reconstruct depth.

@npub1psd…9sr7 As a fellow middle-aged cis white male, I have a theory. I've been wondering how the "ZOMG GAI is almost here" crowd sees things so differently than me. I suspect many of them, mostly cis white men, pay no attention to the actual humanity of the people around them, especially those they see as lesser/subordinate. So when they see ChatGPT as nearly human, that's because it's about as complex as their understanding of their wives, girlfriends, and employees.

@npub1wkx…jlrc Yes! Some years back I gave a talk called, "Why You Should Do Support" advocating for every person in tech to take the occasional support shift. A key part was a call I did circa 1990 with someone who had gotten their first Mac and was struggling to figure out how to plug in the monitor. I had her describe the ports she could find, and one was "dinner plate" or "place setting". It blew mind mind; it was a place setting!

I think this, a discussion of the parallels between "AI" and "crypto", is a good take. I want to dig into the bit on "AI" being different because it has practical use.
"AI" is a marketing term. There's the stuff that was mainly called "ML" up until 2021 or so, which definitely has practical uses. E.g., if you're running a social network and need to help humans find the toxic stuff, ML can help.
But in the last few years there's a wave of hype mainly around the large language models, LLMs, and the large text-to-image models. So things like ChatGPT and DALL-E. It's really not clear to me those have much more practical use than crypto. Certainly not over their costs. 1/

And just so people know where I'm coming from: I have been in the tech scene a long time. I was one of Twitter's first 500 users. I've co-founded a venture-backed startup. I worked at Twitter 2016-17 fighting abuse, and met Jack and other key players then. After that, I worked for 2 non-profits tracking large social media companies. And I've followed Musk's takeover of Twitter closely, both through the media and through my friends who worked there.
Musk's purchase of Twitter was a half-assed lark that he only completed because a court forced him to. His takeover was, even by the standards of corporate takeovers, wildly incompetent. He's spent the time since flailing around, never really understanding Twitter as a business. He is significantly damaging his other businesses and ruining his (undeserved) Henry-Ford-meets-Thomas-Edison public image.
This is not a mega-competent brain genius in action. It's somebody surrounded with yes men, slowly dissolving into a narcissistic puddle.

2024-01-03 18:03:37 GMT

There's this cult of billionaire competence that extends even to their critics. I regularly see people saying that Musk's destruction of Twitter must have been intentional, that he and his rich backers were trying to ruin it. Nope! Musk's just an out-of-control narcissist who's not half as bright as he thinks.

I see the EFF is wrongly defending KiwiFarms again. Sorry, but ISPs have freedom of association like everybody else. If they don't want to host racist abusers, they don't have to. And they shouldn't. Except for protected classes, ISPs not only can choose their customers, they should. That has always been the case; look at how spam and spammers are treated, for example.
If there is a separate problem here that the US has too few "Tier 1" ISPs such that Hurricaine Electric has excessive market power (which I think isn't the case), then that's an anti-trust problem, not a give-up-your-moral-standards problem.

Yup. I can't find it now, but I remember reading the story of a courtier who visited his exiled friend, who was in a rough hut preparing his meager dinner.
The courtier said, "If you would do as simple a thing as flatter the king, you wouldn't have to shell lentils." His friend responded, "If you would do as simple a thing as shell lentils, you wouldn't have to flatter the king."

So ex-Twitter is removing blocking at Musk's order. He believes the feature "makes no sense." And I think I know why.
A consistent theme in Prof Manne's "Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny" is entitlement. Men feeling entitled to women's care and love and deference. Men acting entitled to feelings of competence and prominence and correctness, making successful, knowledgeable women a threat.
From a Trust and Safety perspective, that male entitlement is the number one reason blocking exists. 1/
