Has anybody seen a good writeup of what I am coming to think of Deadline Culture? By which I mean a business culture that structures everything around mostly-artificial deadlines, often with little expectation that they will actually be met.
I think that paradigm used to make sense to me, but I've spent enough time in the Lean world that I only understand actual deadlines now. I like it better, but it's making it hard for me to communicate with people trapped in that paradigm.

I see people talking about it being addictive, but in the "gosh I love smoking" style you see from people talking about addictive games. Linux users, a question. Is this just me?
To me, the original bargain with Linux and Unix was that although the quality of the user experience varied, I had the tools to solve any problem I cared about enough to put in the work.
But as I try the latest Ubuntu with things like systemd, snap, and Wayland, I feel like the bargain has changed. Now the UX is still quite uneven, but I no longer have the tools. The power is in the hands of small groups of developers who aren't interested in sharing.

I need to extract certain information from a bunch of images. I'm a Python developer, but know little about this niche. Can somebody suggest particular toolkits to start with?
The problem: The placement of flippers on pinball machines has a rich history. There are thousands of different pinball machines. I would like to identify broad trends and turning points. I know how to get the raw data (lists of pinball machines, collection of images) but the part I don't know how to tackle is the image processing (selection of best playfield image, compensating for photographer variation, finding the flippers, extracting their position and angle).

For the posts in my "LLMs don't actually know anything" thread, I do my best to verify them. These are four that I'm pretty sure used to work but no longer do. That suggests to me that there's some poor team at Google whose job it is to keep track of when people are mocking their "AI" and suppress the bad results.
I think that is hilarious. I would love to know how many individual fixes they've accumulated like this. It reminds me of a competent secretary endlessly covering for an incompetent boss.

In Loewen's "Sundown Towns", he traces that mythology back to the sundown town era through suburbanization and white flight. As I recall, in his view the constant is the demonization of "those people", with the form changing over the years to match the new geographies and demographics. With various parts of the news media benefiting from feeding the myths to get white eyeballs for advertisers.

I'm currently experiencing the downstream effects of building software to be general enough to handle many possible futures.
My advice: don't do it! Software usually ends up being specific, and often in ways that can't be foreseen during the initial design phase. Creating something technically general up front is always appealing, but in my experience it means a) the struggle of trying to keep many imaginary use cases in mind, b) the interim cost of doing specific things with the excess generality, and c) then removing the generality later on as the specificity of the true needs becomes clear.
I think the real way to keep code ready for future change is a) close team collaboration, b) acknowledging how much important information won't arrive for months or years, c) domain-driven design, d) good automated tests, and e) merciless refactoring as the team learns more about the real needs.

It occurs to me that a major practical use of "AI" is to shift labor from "writer" to reader. Because "AI" creates content-shaped things, readers have to treat artifacts as if they had sufficient thought put into them. So many problems that would have been discovered if the "writer" had actually done the work are now left to readers to detect and explain. 1/

One of the weird things about hype bubbles is the way something goes from world-changing to forgotten. Apple's Vision Pro, one of the many waves of 3D hype going back to the 1850s, is just on the cusp of that. I saw a lot of people talking it up, often heatedly, but I haven't seen a single admission of error, a single lesson learned. Which means we're no more prepared for the next hype wave.

+ Smiling, pleasant, "Oh, no thank you!"
+ Quiet, firm "no" escalating to "fuck no"
+ GTFO of what they see as their domain
Also, I strongly recommend the book "Why Does He Do That? Inside the minds of angry and controlling men." It's the single most astute thing I've ever read, and it is great at helping people see the patterns.

One of the things that surprised me about losing a family member is that it was not just a big impact, but then a thousand little ones. Over years, so many sudden eruptions of grief about the small things that remind us of our love for them. "AI" doesn't have that at all. But the chatbot form is designed to make people think otherwise. There's a giant boom built on a hole in the Turing Test!

Does anybody understand 1960s conceptions of electricity? I'm working on a 1965 Teacher's Pet. Step 1 is what I'd call grounding it; I'm adding a 3-prong cord and grounding the exposed metal. But back then they didn't seem to distinguish between hot and neutral, and didn't have a ground at all, but had something else they called ground. I'm trying to figure out which side of this this should now be the hot side and which the neutral. If it even matters.

I suspect many of them, mostly cis white men, pay no attention to the actual humanity of the people around them, especially those they see as lesser/subordinate. So when they see ChatGPT as nearly human, that's because it's about as complex as their understanding of their wives, girlfriends, and employees.

@npub1psd…9sr7 I'm sure you've tried many things, possibly including this. But just in case: My SAD got way better when I put in a bunch of automated lights. Lumens and color temperature vary gradually over the day in a cycle designed to mimic late spring. It took an unreasonable number of Hue bulbs to fool my brain, but it has been worth it.

I see the EFF is wrongly defending KiwiFarms again. Sorry, but ISPs have freedom of association like everybody else. If they don't want to host racist abusers, they don't have to. And they shouldn't. Except for protected classes, ISPs not only can choose their customers, they should. That has always been the case; look at how spam and spammers are treated, for example.
If there is a separate problem here that the US has too few "Tier 1" ISPs such that Hurricaine Electric has excessive market power (which I think isn't the case), then that's an anti-trust problem, not a give-up-your-moral-standards problem.

A consistent theme in Prof Manne's "Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny" is entitlement. Men feeling entitled to women's care and love and deference. Men acting entitled to feelings of competence and prominence and correctness, making successful, knowledgeable women a threat.

I've followe Kim for years because she's a sharp observer who speaks frankly, especially about race in the US. She gets a lot of reply-guy hostility from white people. I don't know if you meant to be a part of that pattern or not. But you're part of it.
If you don't like what people have to say, you can just not reply and not follow them. Take your own advice: if you hate something so much, stop talking about it. Because what looks shitty to me here is your behavior.

I've never tried it, but typically there are dummy/safe values for testing. Although I think a common approach for CSAM is just to feed all images to an API provider who gives you back a conclusion, in which case you test differently.

Which makes me wonder: does MLK's "stumbling block [...] white moderate" [1] get upset at the open racists because of the racism? Or because of the openness?
In Mills's view, the Racial Contract involves both a political component and an epistemological one. The political one is about oppression. The epistemological one is about *not seeing* the oppression. A lot of the time, it seems to me that white moderates are much more concerned with enforcing the epistemological contract than overturning the oppressive political one.

I've been rereading Mills's "The Racial Contract" and one of the wild things to me is that there is in some ways more agreement between the woke and the open racists than with oblivious whites.
In the racist abuse I recently got, I was called a traitor to the white race. They believe whites have a duty of oppression. That is exactly Mills's "contract between those categorized as white *over* the nonwhites". Anti-racists and open racists both agree on how foundational white supremacy is to our society. 1/2

I often see white people complain that nobody will educate them about racism.
Let's set aside them making it to adulthood without knowing key facts about how the world works. Let's ignore that they've apparently never bothered to read a book. Let's just grudgingly move past their entitlement to think they can peep like baby birds and have predigested knowledge delivered to them instantly.
Let me instead focus on how these supposedly curious people do not want to know shit. Here' my latest example. And before I could even reply, Mr White Fragility blocked me.

Holy shit. In less than 24 hours, I have had two apparently earnest white dudes in entirely separate discussions suggest that maybe the best way to deal with Mastodon being a bad experience for many Black people is to have more Black-run instances. To which Black people would presumably move for safety. That is, their solution to white racism is segregation.
Not only is digital ethnic cleansing is one of the fucking goals of a lot of the racist shitheads, but this also makes it the job of Black people to clean up after white racism. Which is itself systemic racism. How about instead, white people take on the responsibility of limiting the ability of other white people to cause racist harm?
