It's funny to see to #FatalFrame 2 Remake starts putting healing items right in the middle of your path in the later chapters of the game which is such a band aid for the game's difficulty curve which FEELS it should have been easier to fix but apparently wasn't.

My 8BitDo Pro 3 replacement has arrived. This time I am making full use of the extra buttons. I always used the Pedals to thumbstick preses. So much more comfortable. But L4/R4 now also become L2/R2 substitutes. And in another profile, I mapped all ABXY to the 4 extra buttons for easier access.

@nprofile…wq0y Nono, I get it. But I also understand opening centers in every country you sell is a cost you gotta pay for, too.
That said, yes their first pads were EXTREMELY close to those that inspired them:

@nprofile…wq0y At this point they also allow sending back to US - and I think that's fulfilled via Analogue.
Not gonna lie, I know China products can be sus and 8BitDo started as a blatant ripoff (colors, fonts), but in their defense: how else would you do it if you are a small company that only operates in one country? In that case you HAVE to rely on resellers to fulfill warranty. I know Logitech did. When my last mouse died within warranty they asked me to send it to Amazon also.

2026-08-15 15:55:30 GMT

Heard back from Amazon and they'll replace my Pro 3 pad within warranty. So I don't have to send it back to China myself.
That's good.
Unfortunately they can't just replace it - it seems the product page changed (the one I ordered is "no longer available"). So I'll get a refund once I sent it back and THEN can order a new one. Which is all gonna take longer but on the plus side, I'll use that as an opportunity to pick a different color. :)

@nprofile…rtqs The button being well and logically placed it the main concern. Since the game's a FPS game, you aren't interacting with any UI - let alone a button - unless you're in a menu. There's a dedicated menu to "control" the level. So the button will likely live there.

2026-08-10 14:48:28 GMT

Question to you dear readers:
The Marble Game challenge mode will be played in two phases. First you build/complete the machine to get the marbles from the dispensers to the goals (or other objective involving marbles doing their thing).
Second, once done, you start that actual "run" to see if your solution worked.
How'd you call/label this button to start that second phase?

@nprofile…06xp Fair enough. I suppose my bias to this will change once the world shifts from "AI is the solution/snake oil for everything" to using it where it's actually useful. ... and when I can run a free and open model at home in an efficient manner. Time will tell I guess.

2026-08-10 10:34:25 GMT

@nprofile…06xp It's a fair point and a very valid reason to use an LLM if ignoring ethical concerns (which I don't). But my trust levels amidst the sea of slop are at an all time low.
In part because I have seen projects degrade over time despite the "just for assistance" and even colleagues becoming increasingly less skillful over time. It's disheartening.

2026-08-10 07:54:18 GMT

Just recently getting into #decomp projects, but seeing how much of those are "AI assisted" makes me much more enthusiastic for playing on OG hardware again. :P
You can argue decompilation is ideal for AI, but how can I have faith in a project if I dunno if the maintainer knows what they're doing?

@nprofile…jt7f Oh this is wonderful. Tell me more - does it generate collision, too? And are those individual actors so you actually destroy blocks in gameplay (I assume not, but curious)?

2026-08-01 09:39:39 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…4p46 There's also a problem with "reward using different tracks" cause the player could just spawn a bunch of different parts all over, and just put them somewhere in the level. The game has no way of knowing if something is actually used as a solution for the puzzle.

2026-08-01 09:34:57 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…4p46 I am thinking of just limiting parts the player can use but I shiver thinking of that. First because maintainability. I plan to add many more parts to the game. Some even in future updates. So each level that restrict parts would need to be updated to be in line with the new palette. Just a LOT of administrative work.
Second: The game's premise is to encourage creativity. I feel restricting stuff goes against that.

2026-08-01 09:23:39 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…4p46 If it adds to the challenge, then yes. Depends what we consider an obstacle. If it's just blocks the player has to build around, then all it does is force them to build optimized tracks... which is very easy with shapeable tracks. Instead I'd like them to build clever machines.

2026-08-01 08:34:23 GMT

Challenge Mode is progressing again finally.
Got color coded checkpoints and goals (still just prototype meshes) to allow more intricate puzzles as well as a new objective type that limits the amounts of parts the player is allowed to use.

2026-07-30 22:56:34 GMT

Ever since I introduced the ability to select and grab multiple parts in Marble Game, I have the feeling the entire code base responsible for this needs to be cleaned up cause it feels messy.
But then I read through it and while it is complicated, it just is never really hard to read or understand. In fact, each time I try to optimize and simplify, I read through it and go "oh yeah that's why I did that" or "this is why this happens here in this way".
Doesn't that speak of GOOD code?

2026-07-26 00:59:04 GMT

Maybe it's because I'm finally drunk enough that I can admit to myself that I never wanted to make puzzle games.
So trying to add a puzzle mode to my game was a fucking stupid idea.
Which leaves the question: What other kind of artificial validation systems can I integrate into my game?

2026-07-26 00:56:26 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…rtqs Thing is: the game isn't built to detect whether a marble even passes through a specific piece. And unless I expect the player to put things at VERY specific 3D coordinates... how do I even check if they "use" a piece properly?
That's why I built checkpoints and goal areas. But the puzzles I can build with those can be solved mostly with tracks.
I'm sure there's a solution, but I am not a puzzle designer. Never wanted to be.

2026-07-26 00:42:20 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…rtqs I wish that was the case. But I had more than one player tell me they were hoping for some goal oriented mode cause they would lose interest in a sandbox too fast. Which I get cause I tend to lose interest in sandbox games quickly, too.

My brain insists that if I want to keep the challenge mode fun, I need war more elements and impose restrictions on the player. So that solving these challenges becomes ever more complicated puzzles.
But my gut tells me that this is a terrible idea and I should instead focus on just making neat little setups that guide the player in building interesting little machines.

2026-07-25 10:34:40 GMT

I already came up with the first 6 challenge levels for Marble Game. Those will be relatively simple and mostly serve as a (hopefully) sneaky tutorial for the player.
The question is if I can come up with another ~50 that still maintain a challenge AND are fun to play. I am still not convinced of that.

2026-07-24 08:10:26 GMT

This morning my machine took about 10s longer to boot. Huh. Interesting. Were my drives up for regular check?

Anime just peaked in the 80s and 90s. The shading, the details, everything was so dynamic.
But at some point, drawings became digital. And now everything looks flat and lifeless.
Call me a boomer, but you know I'm right. Still good stuff today. Just not as pretty anymore.

Today however I'm taking a break because tomorrow I'll start that mammoth task of adding a challenge/puzzle mode.
I admit I am intimidated. I don't know yet how it'll all work together, how the player will switch between sandbox and challenges (the game's got no main menu after all) and how they'll "run" a challenge, reset etc. That'll be super clunky in the beginning.

2026-07-01 21:44:03 GMT

The issue isn't if a game is physical or digital. It's whether the game has DRM or not.
Without DRM, you can make backups and preserve. Like I did with the Lonely Astronaut flash series which is probably a lot older than most of you (NOTE: this was written on BlueSky. A lot of folks on Mastodon are probably ancient) on average.

2026-06-23 08:42:01 GMT

Why am I developing my games "in the open"? Cause you guys just have the BEST ideas. See I was undecided what to do because when spectating a marble, the player might spot the boring underside of the level. So @nprofile…6j5v suggested adding a propeller AND IT LOOKS SO GREAT!

@nprofile…rqqh You're right, GDScript is incapable of handling a lot of decently intense workloads either. And I believe in both Unreal and Godot, it holds some games back because some devs can't help themselves otherwise.
As for Unreal, Epic proves those right who make their own engines. Godot may be FOSS, but if its devs decide to become stupid, you need a group of other competent devs to make a fork. It's not a one man project.

2026-06-21 10:15:25 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…rqqh Interesting perspective. I have so far only once wanted to use visual scripting and that was with shaders. Cause it helped me visualize them more effectively.
But as with any visual scripting, the readability fell apart with complexity and now that Godot has shader previews, I am going code only.

2026-06-21 08:22:19 GMT

I know I sound like a Youtube clickbait thumbnail, but
the Unreal situation is fucking CRAZY.
I never gave two shits about Blueprints. I think it's too time consuming to work with. But getting rid of that just to - presumably - make it easier for AI to hook into. Fucking insane.

So each time a sound effect wants to play, it asks the resource if it can (and checks if it's close enough to the camera to even be audible). The resource checks all recent play times and if it exceeds the limit - while at the same time, expired play times are removed.
This way I don't need a global manager for anything. I can just do this on a per-instance basis.
2/2

2026-06-12 09:17:57 GMT

This morning I thought I was very clever.
I made a custom AudioStreamPlayer3D class that takes a resource as a "sound effect". That resource contains an array of potential random samples, attentuation settings, etc.
Additionally it contains limits for how many instances can be played and how fast.

2026-06-11 07:54:01 GMT

Trying to figure out which other elements in Marble Game will need sounds. Like spawning parts and deleting the - sure. But moving and rotating? That's what a lot of games do - but a rotating sound may be cool if the player rotates 45 degree or more... but 5 deg increments? That may be annoying quick. Need to be thoughtful with this.

@nprofile…qcgs That's the tricky part. Usually the clouds are smoothed noise in 3 passes that mix() into the sky (in single resolution pass). But tracing back which alpha value was SUPPOSED to be there for each pixel of cloud is tricky. So I added an alpha channel to the clouds - that be linear to cloud weight. Means I should be able to mix() that into a high res sky. But the results are off. Until I use my little hacky solution.
It kinda drives me mad that I made it work but don't know WHY.

2026-06-07 13:29:19 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…qcgs I couldn't say. Shader work is still black magic to me. When I separated my cloud rendering into a low res pass today, I couldn't figure out the proper blending to add it back to the rest of my sky but with retaining all those feathered edges and still being able to occlude (additive came close, but it doesn't occlude anything). So I used this and it works.

2026-06-07 12:50:23 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…qcgs rather lerp from blend to replace a with b with increasing opacity of b

2026-06-07 09:34:28 GMT

I am currently optimizing the sky shader of Marble Game. I wanted to make it faster, but got hooked on how I didn't like how the clouds looked as if they were drawn on a flat surface in the sky (screenshot left). And lowering cloud resolution added alias on horizon.
So I switched the horizon offset around and now it looks like a proper skybox (screenshot right).
And yes, the clouds on the right picture render at half the resolution, making the shader 10x faster.

I am working with Godot for a few years now and my brain still cannot handle how it wants me to declare variable types...

So have you heard of STARDEW VALLEY?

@nprofile…6xm6 No when I mean: "not coming together" I mean that I can't put the tutorial in the game. It's not there yet and I can't get the most basic mechanics for it done. Or even started.

2026-05-14 15:00:29 GMT

Tutorial system of Marble Game is just not coming together. I find myself fussing over details I am not sure about, uncertainties and what-ifs...
This sucks cause I have legitimately no idea how to proceed right now. Just a complete psychological mind block.

2026-05-14 09:13:02 GMT

Finally finished my design-doc_v5_final-final2-complete for a puzzle/challenge mode for Marble Game.
I think this may actually work quite well.
Player will have to marbles spawned from pre-defined dispensers through checkpoints and then into goal areas given certain parts.
Then I can vary this up by adding time limits (reach goal in less/more than X seconds), speed thresholds, multiple dispensers and/or goal areas, etc. Should allow for some neat puzzles.

And let's not forget the dystopian cyberpunk robots.

No, that's fine, game store. I can read the news for free.

Well, would you look at that: I finally get to join the "the ending of the show I really liked was terrible"-crowd.
Good Omens 3 was... disappointing.

That isn't to say I would recommend using OGG this day and age. In this day and age where storage space has become a non-issue, I feel a lossless format is the way to go. Slept on that for too long. Worth it, even if you don't always have good headphones, gold cables or amps filled with crystals.

2026-05-13 12:33:07 GMT

I love how folk hate WebP cause "none of my programs can open it" (they can) while it's likely the best image format we currently have.
Same with OGG. Compresses as good if not better than MP3 and no license costs. Hence barely anyone ever used it.
Folk love to evade good things. :D

This goes to show that if you make an item interaction system in your game, but you can't figure out how to not make yourself fly by lifting an object you're standing on - maybe it doesn't need fixing. Maybe it needs to be a mechanic. :D

I'm having the worst onslaught of impostor syndrome, yet. I talk so much about making my silly game, act like I know what I'm doing, know what's fun, how to make games... and what do I have to show after all these years? Not even a demo, yet. Can't even make a fucking tutorial work.

"Tech" isn't bad.
The "Tech industry" is.
"Gaming" isn't bad.
The "Gaming Industry" is.
See, soon as you add an "industry" to it, you run into problems. Mostly hyper capitalism and greed.

I just absolutely adore these massive environments the game builds. Heck I didn't believe Unreal still had it in it to render a big world without making my PC cry, but here we are.

2026-05-11 17:26:29 GMT

Been playing Motorslice and it's a lot of fun. The game could have done without the collectibles - kinda breaks the flow. But it's there for those who wanna explore and since there's no reward tied to them - it's fine.

@nprofile…x6dj okay but what if I wanna show in between is a text on top of a custom stylebox? does that work, too?

2026-05-11 12:28:01 GMT

I.e. do I need some fancy logic that parses a string and spawn labels and input prompts in a flow-container or something? That's one way I could imagine this working. But this sounds like something that I discover years later that I made it 10 times more complicated than it needs to be.

2026-05-11 12:25:57 GMT

#godotengine devs, I got a question:
So I made myself some nice input prompts that show icons/text based on the input device and mapping.
They live in a handy scene so I can make stuff like "Press [ESC] to open menu". But so I need "Label | InputPrompt | Label". Which is fine for simple prompts - but not very flexible.
What if I just wanna add these prompt to text dynamically aka "Press %input1 to do this and %input2 to do that"? I can never wrap my head around that. Any suggestions?

@nprofile…sv0f of course I can always do it later, but you know you have once one chance at making a first impression. That goes double for games. The vast majority of games get one chance to land.

2026-05-10 14:08:09 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…sv0f And for people like you I am trying to build challenges.
To be honest: I made a game to build marble machines that are fun, relaxing and satisfying to look at. That's the main thing. The program gives you a TON of freedom, but it is only that. Making some sort of puzzles or challenges is gonna be hard. And no matter how much I try, it's never gonna be "the main point".

2026-05-10 09:36:28 GMT

"Is it really that much extra work?"
No. But given the time I have to dedicate to the game and me being a terribly slow developer, it's probably gonna take a while. And I rather surprise myself getting it done earlier than later.

If I wanna do a proper challenge mode for Marble Game because I don't want folk to dismiss the game because "it has no goal", I need to do it before 1.0 release.
And if I do challenge modes before 1.0, then getting the game out this year just became even more unlikely.

2026-05-10 09:27:40 GMT

Me:
* complains that making challenge/puzzle mode for Marble Game is too hard

* writes design doc
* refuses to elaborate

I think what I could do is something where marbles spawn at a pre-determined location and you gotta get them to a goal area with a designated selection of parts.
That's all I can really think of.
But is that enough? I am not sure.
I wanted to make a sandbox game. But yeah - folk want goals, objectives, rewards. I get it. I'm trying...

2026-05-10 07:54:04 GMT

I am still racking my brain on how to make puzzles/challenges for Marble Game.
Since all marbles are simulated and not driven over tracks via splines/paths or sth, it's actually really tricky to check whether a marble runs through a track.
So making a nice "build a machine of all these pieces"-puzzle sounds like something that should be easy, but totally isn't cause the game has no way of knowing if you're "using" any of the given parts aside from if they're in the level or not.
