We definitely have a big winter storm coming (for this far south, an *enormous* winter storm) but I'm not clear why multiple people at Trader Joe's today were buying cases of wine. We might be snowed in for a week in the absolute worst case. This could well be Sober Matty Judgment, but I can't imagine needing 1.7 bottles of wine a day. There was a time that I could, but that is why I am Sober Matty today.

This is not a subtoot, but some of y'all need to hear this.
You can wash cast iron with dish soap. They don't make it with lye anymore, and haven't for decades. This is why you never see people washing dishes with heavy rubber gloves on anymore. It's why they don't make commercials about "dish pan hands" anymore. And it's also why you can wash cast iron with dish soap.
Swear to god. I've been doing it for years. My pans are in good shape.

Last boost: a good friend of mine has been reading about the French Revolution. The conditions that gave rise to it were startlingly similar to what's going on here in the US now.
He said that the catalyst that kicked off the violence was two years in a row of crop failures. People get hungry, they get desperate. Currently wondering what the over and under is on "tens of thousands of jobs gone because the bosses would rather have shitty software do the work cheaply" being an adequate trigger.

When you have a very smart, VERY high energy dog with jaws that can lay waste to everything you hold dear, you keep a pocket of tricks on hand for when he's having a rough time keeping it calm. Sometimes that's training and mental stimulation. Sometimes that's a really long walk.
Sometimes it's a $3 purple towel from goodwill. #SqueakyPete

Yeah, I'm not a hobbyist so I don't do home espresso. Drip's all I need. I'm thinking about doing the Encore ESP just because it's a better burr set, from what I'm reading.

2025-06-25 23:09:18 GMT

Those of you who are #coffee dorks, I need a recommendation. I upgraded our cheap burr grinder to a Fellow Opus, and the grind quality is good but it's crap otherwise. Insanely slow, retention is cartoonishly bad, and I have to clean it after every use or it clogs up. Making coffee is a chore now. I'm done with it.
I need something on the cheap end of good, no more than 200-250 US. Drip only; I don't do home espresso. Don't need a timer, can measure the dose. What's the choice? Baratza Encore?

I am continuing with our marital tradition of tag-team pies: I make and blind bake the dough, she makes the filling and does the rest. I got two pie crusts in the oven now.
And because of real actual workflow improvement reasons, I will sneak notes with swear words on them into the pie crusts before she fills them. 🙌

Reading an updated introduction to Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" that is absolutely riddled with corrective footnotes once she delves into the topic of pronouns. She refers to her androgynous aliens as "he" in the book, defends the practice in this intro written ten years later, and later acknowledges the mistake and also the use of singular "they" as the standard generic pronoun until the 16th century. It is heartening to watch an open mind learn, even where a beloved work is involved.

I don't understand how anyone could keep using what is clearly malware and has been malware for years.

Did I share with some Facebook users the link about Facebook partners accessing your phone's microphone without you knowing?
Yes.
Are they going to stop using Facebook?
LOL.

This is a very polite and self-deprecating way to say "sorry I look so good," are you from Missouri

I haven't read or seen any Jack Reacher stuff, so I may be way off base here. But his whole thing appears to be "he's real big and intimidating and that's why he's the hero," which seems like the grown man version of "his swords have guns in the handles"

Today I told my daughter that she should get her nose pierced in front of my mom just to watch mom have a complete meltdown.
I mean. My daughter would also look cute as hell with a nose ring. But torturing my sainted mother was the main goal.

July 4th is the anniversary of the day I got a scary reminder of why I should be sober. It's a small story but raw and not ready for public consumption. And it keeps me on the path, so I'm grateful. But it was scary.
In a few weeks, I'll be at the 10.5 anniversary mark. I can count on one hand the days of my life that are as significant to me as that day.
Anyway. I don't know what the point here is. Just, tomorrow's emotional for me, and also, get help if you need it. Sobriety is amazing.

a long time ago, I was leaving my job for a new place. On my last day, HR contacted me and asked if I'd like to do my exit early and leave at lunch. I said "yeah, but I really need to get paid for the full day, so I'll stay."
They said "under Arkansas law, the flip side of being overtime exempt is that, if you work one hour in a day, your employer is obligated to pay you for the full day. Don't tell anyone I told you that."
I repeat it to coworkers every chance I get.

Yeah, that's a tough one. I think if you get one set to the right sharpening angle for your knife, you're probably going to be okay. I would love to get one of those hand-sharpening jigs that allows you to set the angle and stone grit (may have to get one for the knife/chisel thing), but so far I've made do with a motorized sharpener.

So my ten-year-sober ass may be going around to liquor stores asking "so...what's the most high octane shit you sell"

I'm also toying with the idea of making a wood finish that another woodworker I like developed, which is fully natural, has no harsh fumes, and is so safe that, if you somehow accidentally drank it, you wouldn't get sick.
The only rub here is that you need very high concentration ethanol (not denatured alcohol, which is poisoned), so either I have to find a source for 190 proof everclear (almost certainly illegal in Arkansas) or else find a lab supply company that will take me as a customer.

2024-06-24 16:21:18 GMT

Bought a new knife/chisel thing from a woodworker I like a lot. It's a new product, so they're doing the initial production run in two batches. Because they didn't know how big the interest would be and didn't want to take a bath on inventory.
All of the above is reasonable and acceptable. I've worked in retail before, even for a manufacturing retailer. But the net result is that my knife could get here in two weeks or three months, and that time frame is making my butt itch.

Hey, I noticed you do a lot of creepy tracking shit you shouldn't be doing and seem to think that following window shoppers home and yelling WHY DIDN'T YOU BUY at their house is somehow a good business model

when I read that, my brain somehow gave "hotbox" the definition for "Dutch oven" for about five seconds, and that drastically changed that sentence but it still somehow works
