My take on this whole brouhaha about the fediverse is as follows:
People can come here and post what they want. But I can block them or their instance if I don't want to hear from them. And that includes hucksters shilling AI garbage and crying about engagement. We don't owe you attention, sir. Go chat with your bots and leave the rest of us alone.
But actual bigots: racists, TERFs, homophobes, red-pill shills and the like should be run out at the point of digital pitchforks. It should be made so uncomfortable for them here, that they flee.
Especially fascists and fascist apologists.

A pox on ID.me for making my youngest and I run in circles for 3 hours because the process to verify identity is badly designed, returns too many errors, and is just fucking awful in general.
We're currently waiting in an hour long queue (down to 33 minutes after 45 actual minutes waiting) for a video call with someone.
All to try to enroll him in community college.
This is a prime example of how technology does not simplify or better our lives. Rather, it complicates and burdens us in ways that never existed before.

Funny how many accounts with male names on YouTube are under a comment I made about a Renaissance girl looking unhappy in her wedding portrait. They're coming out of the wood work to 1) mansplain Renaissance matrimonial behavior to me and 2) shrug it off as "that's just the way it was."
I'm getting a lot of "I'd marry a 12 year old if it was legal, too" vibes though they haven't come right out and said it.

Afroman's verdict reminds me of D.J. T.O. (Antavio Johnson), who got convicted of threatening cops for a song he'd recorded: Kill Me A Cop. He did two years in prison.
Different state, different time, much younger man without a big following. His song is a banger and I've had it in my music database for a long time.
It just goes to show that "justice" is unevenly administered in this country, as everywhere. And that "free speech" only counts sometimes.

I got a data breach notification yesterday from a company I've never done business with -- they aren't even in the US. @nprofile…g67x I was lucky to even have a Medicare advantage health plan next year. They're mostly closing down due to the budget cuts. There was only one in my area so I'm stuck with it, and I'm very lucky that my main doc (a specialist I've seen for over 30 years) is still on the plan.
Dental insurance is always extra, and it can be really expensive to add on so a good many people don't do it and neglect their dental care instead.
The state of our healthcare system is abysmal and you're right, it seems impossible that it can get worse yet somehow it still does.
But what can one expect from a country that worships capitalism like a god? Only profit matters.

The second season of Interview with the Vampire dropped on Netflix and I wanted to re-watch the first season to work up to it. My eldest (who is nocturnal) was up and got sucked in. I was pleased by this because I've been trying to get him to read the series for years. I read Interview when I was in high school, a few years after it came out, and have re-read it several times over the years but not recently. I've also read all the other Vampire Chronicles, but not as many times as Interview.
I really like how they changed Louis and Claudia's race, and moved the timeline up 100 years so they could do a Sinners-esque commentary on racism in the South. And it's beautifully shot. The show really outdoes the book, which isn't a common thing to happen.
I took my afternoon nap and when I woke up, my kid was waiting patiently for me to get up so he could tell me that the third season would be based on The Vampire Lestat, complete with a live music tour in character. And they're coming to Oakland. He's declared we are going to it and as soon as the dates are released we'll buy tickets.
I haven't been to a concert in years, how exciting! And even though I'm old and not really a sexual being anymore, Sam Reid's Lestat makes my heart throb, just a little. Fucking Tom Cruise in the movie was awful. I hate that shrimpy Scientologist. He had no business being Lestat though Brad Pitt was a wonderful Louis.

I'm probably going to regret this but a conversation this morning brought to mind John Zerzan's piece on Star Trek from 1994, which I re-read just now. The paragraph on Data in ST:TNG is particularly apt for today's #Clanker nonsense:
"The android/computer Data, successor to Spock, is the central figure in an episode that illustrates perfectly the elevation of the machine. Data continually "experiences" disturbances that are initially thought to be a sort of electrical malfunctioning in "his" circuitry. Slowly the idea is introduced that "he" is actually having dreams. Much warm and fuzzy emotion envelopes this supposedly marvellous development, this triumph of consciousness. Never mind that the message is more hideous than uplifting. What we are seeing, by imputing human feelings to technology, is a celebration of the very framework that is debasing inner nature as it destroys outer nature. People behaving more and more like machines while machines become increasingly "human" is a horrible development not limited to Star Trek, but certainly applauded and thereby advanced by it."

I've been watching the new series, Alien Earth, on Hulu and I really like it. But I can't help reflecting that our idea that aliens would be inimical and hostile is just a reflection of how we behave as colonizers. The xenomorph and the other alien life forms on the ship are simply reflections of our own ugliness as civilized humans.
My favorite alien creature is the eyeball octopus. It was trying to warn the science officer that other aliens were loose and then took over the engineer to try to fist fight the xenomorph. What a dude.

My eldest informed me that starting tomorrow there is a boycott of YouTube to protest the age restriction b.s. they're going to be running.
Now's a good time to switch to another app like FreeTube or PeerTube. I just finished copying my subscription list to FreeTube this morning.
I regret that I won't be able to support my favorite creators with likes and comments but I hate YT and the enshittification more so there ya go.
Bonus: the FOSS alternatives are supposedly ad-free.

I'm an ex-smoker. Smoked for around 15 years and quitting took almost as long. it was brutal but I finally did it. Now I'm really sensitive to cigarette smoke.
Our apartment building is non-smoking but people have been smoking anyway despite repeated warnings by management that they're in violation of their lease. I'm pretty sure it's the next door neighbor but can't be certain. But he's been chain smoking for days and I'm feeling kind of ill plus wheezing. And not only that, it could kill Praxis because birds can't deal with fumes and odors.
I'm pissed. I've emailed management about it twice in the past two days and have heard nothing and the smoke is constantly in my unit. It's faint. It's more like the feeling of cigarette smoke than the odor but it's unmistakable.
I understand the addiction, having had it myself, but you have to use responsibly. And if you could be evicted for smoking in a building full of disabled folks (some of whom are on oxygen or have COPD), you're a fucking asshole for doing it in your unit.

The fact is that the cops are gonna brutalize you when they get the order to, whether you're sitting and singing kumbaya or not. It's got nothing to do with the actions of you and your fellow protestors. It has to do with when they get the word to swoop in and brutalize you, that's what's going to happen. When some higher up gets his manties in a bunch and decides it's time to crush some skulls.
So do us all a favor and stop saying that crap. It's false and creates dangerous situations for others out there on the streets with you.
The state is the perpetrator of violence, both visible and invisible. The state is going to go medieval on your ass when they feel like it. No excuse necessary.

I went downstairs to receive a food delivery and ran into a neighbor I've been on good terms with for many, many years.
She said she'd been sick. I asked her if it was COVID. She got so mad. Gestured in a circular motion to her face around her nose and mouth (I wear a mask in public, always) and told me I needed to stop with "all this." Then went on a rant about how they'd made COVID all up. I told her I knew people that had had it, one friend had had a stroke when they had to intubate him. She told me that a cold could do that.
I tried to remind her that millions had died, and it was the worst pandemic in living memory, and she cut me off and stalked away.
We're at the point now where people who've actively had at least one COVID infection are denying it like a tinfoil hatter about the moon landing.
This is the exact reason I will never go out in public unmasked again. People are spreading airborne plagues and refusing to be responsible by masking when they're ill.
Why am I a misanthrope? This is one of many reasons.

I'm currently running Power Delete Suite on my 1 million karma, 7 year old reddit account. Overwriting everything first then deleting it. I wonder how long it will take.
It's both exhilarating and terrifying, as well as a bit sad to see it all go but this isn't the first social media account I burned to the ground as I left and no doubt it won't be the last.
