@nprofile…0adl This applies to most things tbh (same with climate change, discussions about capitalism, etc.)

@nprofile…4fmn tbh I've basically never encountered mDNS / link-local addressing to be working reliably at all, completely independent of IPv4 / IPv6 (tho to be clear. IPv6LL works fine for me as long as one doesn't have to interact with DNS at all, and doesn't have to use software which can't cope with IPv6 link-local scope-id's). If it works at all, it feels like luck, and given how broken this stuff is by default, I guess barely anybody else really bothers with it, either.

@nprofile…4fmn Wouldn't—in the Haskell case—the abstract machine have to account for garbage collection and laziness? As soon as one cuts those out… then one would have a functional language with the same power as C, and "equally close to the metal".

@nprofile…aamq It's depressing to see tech companies pivoting primarily into the niche occupied by drugs and gambling. LLMs are basically, statistics-powered Seance-as-a-Service

2026-06-13 23:36:04 GMT

imagine companies would just start replacing LLMs with actual low-wage human workers (in a scenario where these humans are simply cheaper than LLMs), but in order to keep the look&feel™ alive, they proceed to put all the results the humans output through a distorter to make sure the output still contains sufficient occasionally wrong information and hiccups on which business has started to rely.

@nprofile…0adl What would you have expected the community to do given that the operator clearly wasn't really listening until he already got the bill? Like, it was quickly obvious that this was wasting lots of money very fast (as soon as the infrastructure on the "hobbyist" side was made clear), but telling them to stop clearly wasn't working.
They didn't go to actually implement anything which made them waste any money to make the "hobbyist" waste even more.

@nprofile…4fmn well, it's part of the spec.. on the other hand, one could just patch the WebRTC code to return some known-wrong values instead of local interface IPs and such (and the rest is mostly DNS or route leakage afaik)
it's weird that I haven't heard of any attempts to fix the privacy/metadata issues in WebRTC.

@nprofile…6kk0 hm tbh that's something I basically exclusively encountered with really large projects. Most projects I interact with don't really have any space where users and developers interact except an issue tracker...
Often, there exist additional channels for developers, but they rarely contain many outsiders, at all.

2025-10-02 07:30:32 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…6kk0 The last point "if they need a 'community' at all" feels like it just describes the question "do you want the project to be popular / have lots of direct users, or not" because as soon as a project gets used by lots of people, it automatically gains a community.
