Do we even know who to point the fast moving things at? I'd say no not in mass. In a monarchical society this is how accountably was effectively served. I'd argue we where better of then.

Sovereignty Defined by the Exception: Schmitt famously wrote, “Sovereign is he who decides on the exception”. In his view, true political power does not belong to the person who makes normal, everyday laws, but to the authority who can suspend the legal order entirely during a crisis.

I would look to Schmitt for a definition of power. There is a lowercase power in all of those but the uppercase Power is seen in the schmittian exception. He who breaks the rule is sovereign

Ideology Has a Material Existence: Unlike traditional Marxists who viewed ideology as a mere "illusion" or "false consciousness" floating in people's heads, Althusser argued that ideology is material. It is embedded in physical practices, rituals, and institutions that people participate in every day (e.g., going to church, standing for the national anthem, or taking exams).
Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs): While the state uses Repressive State Apparatuses (the police, courts, and military) to maintain control through violence and coercion, it relies on ISAs—such as schools, churches, families, the media, and trade unions—to control people through consent and shaping beliefs.
Interpellation (Hailing): Althusser famously stated that "ideology interpellates individuals as subjects." This means ideology essentially "hails" or calls out to us, turning biological infants into social subjects who willingly accept their roles in society. A classic example is a police officer shouting "Hey, you there!"—the moment you turn around, you acknowledge that the call applies to you, thereby accepting your social identity and subjection to the law.
The Illusion of Free Will: Althusser argued that ideology makes us feel like we are completely autonomous individuals acting on our own free will ("I think for myself," "I choose this path"). In reality, our very sense of self and freedom is socially constructed by the ideological structures we live within, which ultimately serves to reproduce the capitalist system.
Summary: For Althusser, ideology is not just a set of false ideas; it is the concrete system of institutions, rituals, and practices that constantly reproduces our belief in the existing social order without us even realizing it.
Would you like to explore how his concept of ISAs compares to Antonio Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony?
