I'm a step dad but also got to play grandpa to my stepson's daughter and son. My stepson taught me a ton of things (aided and abetted by his mother, my wife of 44 years) and I still treasure time spent with him, but once I found my feet as a grandparent, I knew it was the best thing going. "Kids" are both full-blown adults now and still wonderful through and through.

A friend in Junior High in SF decades ago was the son of a Nisei mother from Visalia and a Nisei father from Honolulu, both of whom were interned (might have met in the camp). He fought in the 442, not given to discuss that, or much of anything else, it seemed. They had just the one son and spoiled the shit out of him, including letting him put on his baseball spikes and play catch on the manicured patch of lawn behind their house on Octavia Street. I did read up on it at the local library, but never pushed it as a conversation piece. This and the Code Talkers join the Tuskegee airmen as people who fought for recognition as they also laboured to save the régime that oppressed them in the hope that better times might come of the common effort.

This thought occurred to me awhile back, though not with the stark reality that now confronts us. Had an interesting conversation about Warren Buffet and his testimony in front of Congressional Committees on this score, and mentioned that common action is like a good investment that our "broker"(our government) is refusing to make, but that we don't seem to have the option of changing brokers.

5 cm on the ground in Port Alberni and plenty still falling. Shoveled, now hunkering down with books and music.

The more I delve into economics the more I'm getting the feeling that the discipline has been tailored to omit anything inconvenient such as, per Steve Keen, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, converted, along with all the waste and destruction of our current economic model, into an externality and ignored. There are better models, I suspect, that meld economic considerations into a broader study of the needs of society and the environment, as well as social and ethical underpinnings.

I recall being in France in the heyday of the Minitel, chatting with a bus driver who inadvertently ran up over 5000 francs worth of charges and purchases, but once he curbed his spending, he still swore by the thing. I think it was originally intended to mostly supplant phone books.

Free lunch syndrome. The very word social has fallen into disrepute and the idea of collaboration and cooperation, of pooling resources, of agreeing that there might be common goals best achieved by mutual aid seems to be fading into the rearview with each passing day. month, year. Any yet herculean efforts to help in a crisis seem to be a feature of our society, witnessed over and over with fires, floods, pandemics, wars...we just don't seem to be able to come together through common institutions to ensure the well-being of our fellow citizens, of baking mutual aid into as many processes as possible and, heaven forbid, avoiding and forestalling crises in the first place.

Let's stop funding fossil fuels and redirect those funds back to health and education and housing, true welfare for Canadian citizens and those who come to join us. And, in addition, it seems to me that Canada was a potentially sovereign nation until, under Trudeau I. and his finance critter Chrétien, we joined the Bank of International Settlements in 1974, ensuring that government funds would be generated through commercial lending, rather than using the Bank of Canada to issue funds. Time to re-evaluate how we approach money as well as what we do with it.

It was, still is, because it lives on in my head. Grand daughter went to Billie Eilish show last Tues, and brought home stills and video of the concert, and I was struck by all the development of light, sound, and theatrics in the presentation of music. What used to be an afterthought and sideshow has now rounded into a tightly integrated multisensory presentation where the music is the spiritual, intellectual and emotional centre but where the light and theatre lend a stylistic force to the overall presentation, including the crowd participation.

This reminds me vaguely of some of the Ectoplasmic Assault light shows at the old Fillmore Auditorium c. 1966.

Correction? We should all pay for our health...together, through government spending, and all care should exclude profit. We can pay health professionals well and ensure good working conditions, but no leechy shareholders, and keep the administrative burden reasonable.

I have an art-loving friend who is desperately seeking a physical copy of this book. It is by a local author about a local First Nations artist, out of print. Author spurns reprinting for reasons known only to her.
If you can help, let me know. Friend is not on Mastodon, sadly

Guess I better break out the camera...we have some flowers on our garlic chives both on the sun deck and in the yard that are visited by a multiplicity of pollinators. It's fun to watch the "butineers" (It's what bees do if they speak French, butiner).
