it bothers me that in #philosophy, a "sceptic" is someone who just assumes that some underbaked hypothesis (like "brains in a vat") explains our experience just as well as reality does.
unlike, you know, an actual sceptical person who tries to find ways of distinguishing what's real from what isn't.

one thing i found that these things are pretty bad at is judging their own capabilities. they don't know what they are bad at or have no idea how to do. well, they might have been given examples in the system prompt, but they don't have much of a "feeling" it (but hey, neither has my dad :P ). if they say they can't do something, chances are that's because they just imitate someone else saying that.

you can't just take its word for it, come on.
i saw some conlangers try this a while ago. unsurprisingly it had loan words from arabic and the the concept of the language shifted over time and words changed their meaning. chances are you even will encounter this is you continue your experiment.
it's also basically impossible for people to create a language unaffected by previous languages, perhaps even if they somehow never encountered any language themselves.

#inktober day 11: snacks
again, no great inspiration today. but i looked out for some snacks that would be fun to draw and settled on these filled gingerbread hearts. also i ate the entire bag 😛.
drawn from a photo i made of them.
i kinda wanted to embrace simple geometry, but without shading or hatching it's a bit bland i guess. plans for tomorrow, right?
and i learned that the "handle transform tool" in GIMP is pretty great and you should check it out if you haven't…

more classical #inktober again. day 10: nomadic.
so i thought that camels probably live a somewhat nomadic life. wandering though deserts from oasis to oasis or something.
anyway, instead of checking that, i just really wanted to draw a camel (another first) and so here it is.
also i had no idea that camels were that fluffy 👀.

#inktober prompt #9: sun.
okay so i tried something new and i'm still not sure how well it worked 🤔…
I tried to do some kind of "fractal" painting first painting the coarse details and then refining it. and the coarse stage actually worked pretty well after gaussian blurring it a lot. but adding in finer details felt like it would become increasingly tricky and time consuming, which i guess that's not surprising.
i tried a lot of new approches here.

recommended listening while looking at the picture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbQvBPbQGv8&list=PLClAHa6NCBYUcERyIEfU9h0njV4cUv5UI&index=8
this was the most effort i ever put in an inktober picture (a few hours) and i hope it shows. also colored the characters, It just felt right.
perspective is still pretty dang hard, but I'm happy it mostly came together at the end.
according to my plans, the next one will have a lot more color. :)

i was really struggling for an idea here. i chose calligraphy…ish. i guess it's a little cheating if you ctrl+z every other penstroke 😅.
not particularly proud of this one. maybe i could have done better on paper, tbh...
anyway, i think o got a good idea for tomorrow 😊.

so todays #inktober prompt is "trek" so i chose the one obvious thing. i thought it might be fun to draw the (TNG) Enterprise from memory, but uuh, that's as far as i got. it's probably better to get a reference at this point 😅.

#inktober prompt for today: binoculars.
technically i finished the drawing before midnight so i'm on time 😛.
drawn in GIMP with underdrawing (sketch layer, also used by all others entries here except my first). reference is a photo i made. i wanted to draw the other side too, but i ran out of time…
edit: added the actual picture, lol.

the #inktober motto is "exotic" so i chose the possibly most exotic thing possible: Booster Exotic.
this is not an endorsement of any product, fictional or otherwise. i just like to drink cheap, sweet goop sometimes.
drawn from reference in GIMP using all kinds of digital tools, like scaling, deforming and lot's of lassoing (no tracing, though 😛). the reference also misses the text "serve ice cold", which the actual can has 😩.

#inktober prompt #3: boots
i'm pretty unhappy with them, should probably just drawn something from reference. i guess i kinda added details for challenge, but the whole shape is wrong and i don't exactly know how. i guess they are too wide somehow…
but i shouldn't whine so much, just fail and move on.
judging from the amount of belts and spikes, these are clearly the boots of a digimon 😛.
oh and they are standing on floppy disks, because those are boot media. :P

only sligthty late for #inktober
motto was "discover". it's a frame from a music video. i first tried another one, featuring the entire band, but i got completely overwhelmed with detail.
it's pretty rushed, especially the face, but i had to get it done.
made with a drawing tablet in GIMP.

btw, is it possible that COVID quick tests just don't respond in some people?
because i already had some symptoms when i first tested and i came back negative, but #2 (who i tested, who else would?) had an immediate strong positive result.
i only have one test left (originally intended for #1, but they didn't have any interest in being tested, of course 🙄), so i don't wanna waste it when i clearly have still have symptoms…

yeah, i'm an anarchist. it's my bio and i also have a black flag in my display name.
i think a big part of our disagreements is that you seem to think that direct government control is the primary alternative to state capitalist business, whereas i consider the two as largely part of the same social pathology. i think those businesses are largely an outgrowth of the state, and of the authoritarian social biases that make the state possible.

2024-06-24 19:00:53 GMT

- reply

yeah, the typical response to "market failure" is "the government should do it". this is fallacious because they wound have at least make the argument that government would do it better. but they typically don't have much of a concept what "government failure" would be and what disqualifies government from certain tasks.
and of course it ignores all options that aren't state capitalist corporations and state socialist bureaucracy. which i think aren't that fundamentally different anyway.

well, it's not like i can do anything to prevent governments to use and develop AI, which is fairly terrifying. if would enable a sort of hyperstasi beyond anything we have seen, and individually tailored propaganda that largely replaces genuine human interaction to make people more governable. the ultimate wet dream of a government.
what we can do is support and promote community-owned open source AI projects that are actually useful for the people who use them.

2024-06-23 09:12:30 GMT

- reply

well, it seems the strawman didn't help, because we still don't agree what the worst option is 😛.
though i guess your example of "private" prisons highlights the absurdity of what some call "private sector", like it's 100% paid by the state (well, also the slave labour of the prisoners actually), and none of the "customers" would possibly want to be there.
state run roads however are a giant subsidy for the car and trucking industry and it would be great to de-externalize the costs here.

2024-06-23 08:07:31 GMT

- reply

no, maybe you should try to listen instead of pigeon-holing me in some stupid bucket.
the "private" sector is full of privileged, centrally planned hierarchies that don't actually give people much choice.
i want a free society, with institutions that are in free competition and co-owned by the people who partake in them.

2024-06-23 06:17:49 GMT

- reply

it's bad because it's heavily monopolized. and nationalizing would make it so much worse.
and guess what, states are self-interested actors too. they just face even less social accountability than "private" firms…

hm, i have no strong preference on absorbing vs annihilating, i feel they both make sense in their own right. i guess annihilating sounds more badass 😅.
calling them "identitiy elements" or worse "identities" just sounds kinda sloppy and weird. like, they aren't any more identical to anything than anything else…

that's an absorbing element (or apparently "annihilating element", but i never heard that).
0 is neutral on addition, 1 is neutral on multiplication (and right-neutral on exponentiation…).

2024-05-09 10:32:25 GMT

warm take: "neutral element" is a much better name than "identity element" (for e in ∀x : x★e=x). any objections?
