I miss the bot that was just all, like, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Cuz it felt better to retoot it than to type that myself but goddamn I just cannot get into a flow state today with all these meetings! I did do some good work today but I could be doing so much more if I wasn't having to get on calls every other hour, and they're calls I can't really contribute much to, also!

Saying chowdah is definitely part of it. 😂 It's pretty forgiving to make, it's like broth, fish, cubed potatoes and/or carrots, boil, frozen peas/corn, herbs, simmer, cream. I like dill in it.

Corn bread is super easy, you should try! The soup is more of a chowder yeah, I add milk or cream to it. Liquid is mostly veggie broth usually but I've used chicken broth and it's been fine too despite it's being, in concept, slightly wrong.

I haven't made corn bread in awhile so I'm looking forward to that. Also it's gonna be good to get some frozen fish that's been there for awhile out of the freezer and into our bellies. I want to practice making the fish soup because next time I'm gonna make it with smoked fish. I saw some whole smoked fishies at the grocery and the prices were good. Also get rid of some frozen/canned veggies too... /fishsoupramble

Chickie patate tonight, probably chili and cornbread tomorrow, fish soup at some point too...

I lost a longer post wherein I detailed all of the ways LLMs have shown themselves to be unreliable technology that's incapable of cause and effect reasoning. Can't be arsed to re-write it but, short version, these things have routinely given people advice that if followed, could or did kill them, don't know the difference between information they have in their training data and information they invented, and due to their fundamentel architecture will never be capable of anything more than generating convincingly lifelike language. A computer program that could reason would be a game changer. That is not what LLMs are, but it is what they are being marketed as. As more and more high profile failures occur, and as these companies *continue* to not be profitable that is going to become apparent even to the tech-illiterate C-Suites that have drunk the kool-aid.
I've lived through a couple of technological sea changes. The internet becoming ubiquitous, computers getting tiny... those were things that literally changed the world and *nobody* had to say "You better get a smartphone or you'll be left behind" it was self-evident. *Nobody* had to mandate the use of tablets in business. People bought their own and used them. People actually *wanted* these things because they had actual uses. They *actually* saved time. LLMs pretend to save time. Sure, you summarized hundreds of pages of text down to their salient points in a few seconds, except one of those points is a lie and you don't know which one. You prototyped a software project in an hour, but it's riddled with security vulnerabilites and moreover, is unmaintainable because you can't explain code you didn't write to a colleague. LLMs as they exist today are snake oil, plain and simple, and no amount of new data centres is going to change that. There is no "there" there. It's hype.
So, agree to disagree that the tech is revolutionary. Brass tacks, nuts and bolts, it isn't. Machine learning and the ability to easily discern patterns in data, that's a game-changer of a sort - except it's been around a long time, it's not new. The new hotness is LLMs, and frankly, they suck. They're flashy, they can pull off some neat tricks, but there's no killer app, because the fundamental flaws are always gonna getcha. Billions of dollars and probably hundreds of man-years went into GPT-5 and it still couldn't accurately count the number of Bs in the word blueberry. It just doesn't pass the smell test. Yes, lots of people are excited and jumping on board, but a reckoning is coming.
Also agree to disagree that culture matters. What others think of us is humanity's great obsession. We invented morality and taboos. The universe is indifferent if you punch your AI-loving boss in the face, but it is *very* socially frowned upon and because of that, there are consequences for doing it. Culture doesn't come from nowhere, it emerges from history, our subjective embodied experience, the collective unconscious... and all those things are subject to change when humans put their minds to it. Lots of things have been "inevitable" - monarchy, slavery... we changed them by resisting them, by shouting about them, and in some cases beheading the folks responsible for them. Culture, what people say and do and our memes (I do not mean internet memes I mean actual viral ideas) matter a great deal.
As for how to handle things going forward? My personal plan is to resist AI in every business context it is introduced to me in. I will do everything in my personal power to spread knowledge about the human and environmental costs of this technology, and about how it cannot be trusted for mission critical tasks. I will share the studies that show it doesn't increase profitabilty and the articles about the suicides, poisonings, and deepfake porn videos in high schools that are enabled by giving AI companies money. I will share the analyses that show this is an economic bubble. In short, I will do my damndest to make it unpopular and I will try to convince others to do the same.

"OpenAI already has 800M users which is a faster adoption rate than any other online service—ever."
And yet OpenAI isn't profitable, and isn't projected to be for years, and their flagship product is constantly plagued with the worst kinds of marketing snafus. ChatGPT encouraging delusional messianic thoughts in the mentally ill, playing an active part in preventing a teen with suicidal ideation from getting help and directly encouraging their suicide, and more mundanely simply being unable to do basic counting, math, and deductive reasoning (which it will never be able to do). All that, and the fundamental flaw of hallucination - which there is no solution for and makes LLMs essentially unsuitable for any kind of mission critical work.
Then there's the unavoidable fact that almost every single AI pilot in the corporate world is failing, and that most organizations that adopt AI tools have to mandate their use because people simply don't like them or want them. And "not being liked or wanted" is, sorry to say, not typically a feature of world-changing tech that will achieve universal adoption.
Then, there is the growing consensus that the current AI craze is an economic bubble, which could potentially collapse and cause a recession. Also not typical of inevitably world-changing technology. More typical of the dot com boom, or the NFT craze.
Then there is the history of AI hype and investment, which has swung between summer and winter throughout the information age. Most human cultural things do this. "Endless AI Summer" is, in the context of known history, unlikely.
Finally, I disagree with your "the genie is out of the bottle" assertion as evidence that we all need to get used to some theoretical new reality. Plenty of technologies fail in the marketplace and are thereafter never seen again or restricted to specialized functions and industries. Supersonic aircraft, gas turbine engines, crypto (which found success as an investment vehicle and money laundering tool but has literally no other utility and no impact of most people's everyday lives despite the things boosters of it say (shockingly, highly similar to the things AI boosters say e.g adopt it or you'll be left behind, it's The Future etc)
The fact is, culture plays a big part in whether a technology lives or dies, and culture is created by all of us, individually and collectively - so saying "No" to AI has power. It is not only the state that has the power to regulate behavior. Social expectation is incredibly powerful as well. If using an AI summary gets you looks of disgust across the meeting table, that is a strong incentive to not do it again.
I'm truly tired of the 'It's inevitable, get used to it' messaging, and so very very unimpressed by the idea that our governments, which are transparently in thrall to billionaires, are going to protect us from the misuse of this tech. *We* protect us from it, and we do it by making its use unpopular and unprofitable through our actions.

Nothing's really working at work today. My desk that got coopted had a USB-C dock - which I need for audio and connecting my two monitors. The guy who could give me one wasn't there, so I went out and bought a USB-C to Dual HDMI adapter. That works fine, but now I have to choose between having power plugged into the other USB-C port, or audio, and I have meetings later, so they'll have to be done on battery, unless I can get my onboard audio working - it's never worked since I got this laptop and I know pretty much fuck-all about audio in Linux.
Anyway that's what I've spent my entire morning doing instead of actual tasks. Just trying to get audio working and looking for a dongle. This whole desk thing has really got me turned around. That dev's only got my desk until February though, and then I've got it reserved until May, and I'm thinking I'll write software that'll keep automatically reserving it. Take my desk, will you..! I don't even wanna be here!
On Friday I have to go figure out how to either make my mom's (who has memory issues) computer easy enough for her to use so she can still pay bills (I'm thinking a big HTML homepage with big colorful buttons to go to certain websites - the bookmarks bar just seems to confuse her now) OR I get my parents to transition to my dad starting to pay the bills instead of my mom. She called me sounding pretty upset and confused, saying she can't find things on the computer. It's upsetting. Dad should be stepping up on his own. This is frustrating. I worry about my mom driving. I worry about them missing important bills or paperwork. I worry that I haven't been told the truth about her condition. I don't fuckin' know. Have a rant about being middle-aged, Mastodon.

I count it as working if I'm thinking about work, if that helps at all. For me, sometimes lying on the couch is working if my mind is consciously or even subconsciously working on a problem. Sometimes I work while I sleep. 😎 Sounds like I'm joking but not really. I really do wake up with solutions to problems I was thinking about before going to bed. Brains are weird.

Basically we were driving by a local apartment building that has a very lovingly kept garden, and the lady that takes care of it was out there and ahe was smelling the flowers, and then she audibly kissed one, saying "mwah!" we both laughed with delight and she looked embarrassed. We drove away but both wished we could have told her we weren't laughing *at her* - we were just charmed and delighted!

I still have a Pixel 3 and I'm definitely considering replacing its battery. After many years of use it barely lasts a full day with only light use. It's still a perfectly great phone though. It's that or I might switch over to a cheap-ish Motorola (with stylus!) now that I'm doing my own photo hosting it won't be as much of a blow to lose the free unlimited full quality photo storage Google provides with Pixels.

Honestly I think your making these folks uncomfortable would probably be good for them. It's good to be exposed to stuff that's outside one's usual bubble. If they don't wanna see it they don't have to click. I feel it's up to them to curate their own timelines. Not your responsibility to separate into another account to make them more comfortable! It's kind of you to think of their comfort but it's ultimately not your responsibility! (ymmv just my way of looking at it)

I'm honestly not totally sure how to describe it. For reasons, you're trapped in your house with a pair of VR goggles that make all your household items come to personified life as hotties with insane outfits. All of these people have different things going on. Some have conflicts with other household objects, some have psychological issues to work out (e.g your diary is kinda confused about her identity, because every time you write in her it's like she's experiencing it as a memory, so her identity is all mixed up with yours)
It's also got a sometimes vaguely creepy vibe. Most of the objects present as basically human, with outrageous outfits based on what they are, but some descend into creepy-land. The dishwasher is just, like, a mascot costume of a dishwasher? So a dishwasher with a cartoon face and human legs. The air conditioner is a pair of eyes peering out of the ducts at you, and hands coming out through the vent grilles.
Anyway, it's very unique, almost every line is voice acted, it has really pro voice acting, and the narrative elements are engaging. You'd think a game with such an out-there premise would basically just lean on it but there's actually some compelling emotional content to it. I'm not very far into it yet, but so far I'm enjoying it a lot. It's made me laugh out loud more than once and that's always a good sign.

I've been playing "Date Everything" and it's a really fun little dating sim / visual novel. It has a great sense of humor, great voice actors, and an interesting story! If this is the kinda game you like, you really should check this one out. This was made with love, and also, pretty obviously with good funding, the production values are outstanding. The bedside table is voiced by Steve effing Blum.

fwiw doesn't seem to make much difference to me. If I really love a book I'm likely to finish it, whether it's physical or intangible. I've read entire books on my phone, ereader, and tablet without much changing about how much I read daily. Paper books do have the advantage of sitting there on the table reminding me to read them, and overall I prefer an ereader or paper book to a backlit screen, but I've found that turning on the night light on my tablet has helped with the eye strain of reading on a screen. Still, more likely to pick up a library book than my tablet which is why I've read a bunch of other books while my Diane Duane sits there in the "reading" status...

In a meeting this morning I mentioned that I'd watched "Past Lives" over the weekend, and one of the dudes asked what kind of movie it was and laughed when I said it was a romance ("You watched it with your wife right") ffs can we stop being the gender police about every fucking thing.

The guy that came and replaced our car battery the other day had a full on field of intense cologne smell around him. Not pleasant. I guess it's better than B.O!

😁 similar but not quite, kind of like, it's a rolled up, many layered pastry, and there is a thin spreading of chocolate between each layer vs a pain au chocolat/chocolatine that's more of a rectangular croissant with chocolate in the middle. Chocobuns are a little less classy but dessert for two for 7$ is hard to say no to 😁

2025-06-04 22:21:10 GMT

Hot today. Went on a little jaunt after work to refill our sugar free soda supply and picked up some whole wheat bread, chips, chocobuns, paté and roast beef too. Maybe later we'll have a drink with dinner and a chocobun afterwards. 🍪

I mean, technically I could bail, but it would be rude. I'm having a few drinks after work with a co-worker of mine. He's a bit younger than me and reminds me of myself before my idealism was ground to dust by capitalism. He wants to run his radical ideas for changing the culture of our organization by me.

a fun fact about curl is its source code gets licensed for use in a LOT of other software including many video games, and the license contains the author's email address, so he receives support requests and complaints from all kinds of people about all kinds of software, just because using his code in your project only requires that you display the license 🤣

Cool! I like the idea of open world Mario Kart, I hope it's fun! Gonna have to get one, eventually 😎 Enjoy your new Hades platform! 🤣 I just finally started playing through Bastion, on the Vita. Hades is better.

I sent them a piece of my mind last night. Really tired of this culture war nonsense. Don't they have better things to do? (They do, and they're failing at them, hence the fear-mongering distraction 😑)
What books are available and to who in school libraries is up to parents, teachers, librarians, and students. Keep the gov't out of it ffs.

yeah ever since we replaced our crappy knives with fancy ones, there's been a space in the knife block and I've looked at all kinds of different "cool" knives but ultimately I don't *really* need another one.

God, he's so big! Those knives really hold an edge well. Ours is still going strong, I only hone it every couple of months. Also the ancillary books are good and Snow Crash is such a classic. 😌

Huh! A told me she bounced off the first book too. That does sound pretty discouraging. 😬 Thank you for the warning. Have you heard anything about the Pern books? Those are old classics I've meant to read for a long time too. Diane Duane'll have none of that bull I don't think!

2025-05-05 18:23:12 GMT

Yeah I believe there's a few of them, they're their own sub-series, Nita and Kit from the mainline series are in this one too. It's reminded me how much I like her writing, and I think I'm going to go back to the wizards books and get through the ones I've never read. Related: I'd also like to do the Wheel of Time books since I never read those at all but have been hearing how great they are forever.

I'm reading The Book of Night with Moon - it's one of Diane Duane's Wizards books, only this time it's about wizards who are cats. I love how it depicts cat culture, customs, and relationships.

that looks like some good declutterin'! I may contribute to this hashtag sometime this week! Getting rid of a bunch of ancient broken small electronics at the drop-off point at the library. Also a small pile of defective hard drives I've been hanging onto for a couple decades... 😅
