1/ got a few days on Pacific Crest Trail section D northbound from Wrightwood home to Agua Dulce. 92-ish miles across the San Gabriel mountains, daily 30s. Been across this section many times both ways all seasons with and without a sleep system. Familiarity delivers novelty in the form of change. The differences increase each time. Wanted to check snow on the high peaks (melting), look for any early thru hikers (none), and scout issues for my trail crew (lots). Great trip!

Some pics from a trail work project a week ago. Huge washout, lots of rock work and rerouting and tread work. Took a couple of days but it was great crisp sunny weather.

1/ Bivy on top of Mt Baldy tonight. Came up from Wrightwood on the north backbone trail over Wright Mt, Pine Mt, and Dawson Peak before Baldy's north bowl. Afternoon/evening hike, was in the dark since Dawson Peak. Nice full moon lighting up all the snow though. It's been real nice, zero wind, clear, and only low of 45F tonight.

Got a couple jars of olives off one of the trees before the animals this year. Waited a little longer to prep them but they're alright. Did a few salt soaks so they're in the full salt and vinegar brine now and topped with olive oil to be air tight for a long soak. Maybe 4, 5 weeks.

2/ some more bright and sunny mid day views from Friday's fresh dusting of snow. Bighorn Park, Lone Pine peak seen between two aretes, Mt Hitchcock and Hitchcock lakes, and the southern side of the Whitney zone with the entire eastern crest south of it 😍

Funny. This honey bottle is my favorite hiking water bottle the past couple of years. It’s light, has a wide mouth, has bonus ml over a 500 at 675, and the shape fits well in a pack side pocket. I pair it with an old 725 ml smart water bottle. A couple running flasks up front gives me a liter, then the bottles a liter++ in reserve.
I wanted to normalize things and get 2 500 ml Nalgene HDPE bottles, but for half the price I could just get another honey bottle and it comes full of honey 🍯

1/ Quick overnight around Kearsarge and Glen passes. Some pics over Kearsarge on the high trail. Bullfrog lake glowing with East Vidette rising behind it. I look at East Vidette different now after overnighting on the summit. Kearsarge Pinnacles showing off in the mid morning light. I love this giant slab along the pinnacles. It's like one of them got sliced off. It's enormous and fantastic.

I recently read a great blog post that likened our false perception of "intelligent" output to the Forer effect that people experience when listening to a "psychic" doing a cold reading. Our minds apply meaning to the statistical gibberish being thrown at us, it's not inherent knowledge.

1/ Diva woke up Sunday at Whitney Portal after driving south from Independence the night before. I wasn't sure how much enthusiasm she would still have for hiking but it was quickly clear that she was ready for more. We went up main trail toward Lone Pine lake. I was curious if the water crossings would deter her, but she waltzed through them and was always ready to keep going.

1/ Some weather this weekend. Approaching Army pass it became apparent it would be a race to get over before the clouds broke.
Didn’t make it, thunder and lightning struck right when I got to the top. Ran back down to Lake 4 and waited all day while it cleared and stormed over and over up above. Each storm had different colors and the light changed dramatically.

The studio I’m at now is a creative media agency. The age composition is very interesting and different than game studios.
It’s all old and young people, nothing in between. Gen x & z, no millennials in sight.
This tracks with similar multimedia “Swiss army knife” agencies I’ve worked at. Generally people at the end of their careers with a deep bag of versatile skills looking to stay active, and people at the beginning with specific skills looking for a break. Great mix, works well.

My walk to work from Union Station to Pershing Square goes right past all the blocks where the protests have been happening. City Hall, the Federal buildings, and LAPD building are clean but the Courthouse and LA Times got murdered.

@nprofile…fakd I remember considering those for use with flexible running shoes since there’s no stiff plate, but figured microspikes are the same by that point (without the plate they can’t go anywhere steep and hard so I’d only take them where I’d use microspikes anyway which are easier to carry). And durability concerns. Curious how they work out though, I imagine there’s a middle ground where they’re useful.

2/ around 1:30 am, less than a mile from the summit, I hear someone call and see a light.
A pair of hikers got lost for hours after the summit. Panicked after dark, they called SAR and hunkered down under a rock. No alpine layers, no emergency blankets, wet running shoes and socks left freezing outside the garbage bag the hikers were wrapped in.
They needed help but weren’t in immediate danger. I gave them all my extra layers, a water bottle since theirs froze, told them to lay on their shoes and socks to dry them, and that I’d lead them down on my way back.
It took a LOT of convincing when I got back for them to get up and come with me (instead of staying there for minimum 12 hours before SAR would arrive to do the same as me).
Led them off the summit and across trail crest in the dark, then down the chute and out through morning. Stressful because they just had sneakers, microspikes, and trekking poles. No boots, crampons, ice axes, or helmets. 🫣💀

Rockslides that were there up to a couple days ago are gone, just sweeper trucks going up and down now. Probably open by next week.

Trying and revisiting a bunch of Mastodon clients for fun because it’s been a while. Mona, Mastoot, Mast, Tootle, tooot, and Radiant. Evaluating ease of browsing, account switching, account lists, tag lists, filters, notifications, and posting.
I drifted to the latter four, then latter two, and now finding myself settled into Radiant quite comfortably with some easily accessible tweaking.

@nprofile…vvm4 😄 hah, I did pass a lot of people going up and down.
Doing it in a day is a thing people do since overnight lodge permits are limited. But, like Mt Whitney and the Grand Canyon, people generally aren’t very trained so it’s a 14-20 hour day. Adding the extra mountains I did is apparently ordinarily a 3 day trip?
Guest house owners are bewildered.

3/ Stats.
Distance and elevation gain to the summit felt familiar. Added a couple peaks on the way back for extra.
Wore just long sleeve base layers the whole time except the very last summit climb pre dawn where I added a light mid layer upper. Saw frost in the bowl above 11,000 feet. Not much wind.
Carried two 500ml soft flasks. I counted 3 water sources in the 8.5 miles to base camp which also had water. Well supported trail.

I’ll dig up my Pixelfed account and use it to 1:1 replace my private Instagram account (which was just photo sharing for friends and family). I can direct any friends and family that liked pretty pictures there. The app is simple to understand as an Instagram clone.
Then I’ll keep using Mastodon as I do (which is sort of micro blogging context around photos). If anyone gets curious, they can try Mastodon.

1/ Stealth pack project. You generally can’t tell if I’m running, or hiking, or multi day backpacking. That’s intended and I’m always taking it further.
This cheap pack has a decent design and ok construction for a foundation. I cut all the extra crap and removed the external pockets and pouches. I don’t want anything visible or attached outside except an ice axe.
Next I’ll reinforce the shoulder straps, they’re weak, then make internal pockets.

@npub1c5c…644a not much big fall risk in those, but a lot of freak slip and stumble / moving rock risk (big and small). I wear a helmet, never know if someone is dislodging stuff up above.

@npub1npy…3sf4 wow, that’s a huge amount of land that moved. Agree, not so inviting / safe to cross 😮

Overheard from a 5 year old responding to an adult asking what her drawing was: “It’s abstract. It’s what it wants to be, not what you want it to be” 🤗

Off to Jersey for a couple weeks for in-law family reunion. Looking forward to proper Pennsylvania junk food (Herr’s), Wawa’s, real pizza, tomato pie, Italian ice, and beach life at the shore.

Strangely, my Lake South America route made a gps track that looks like Africa.

@npub1npy…3sf4 it was about half an hour driving through the smoke before getting past it.

Driving south on 395 through smoke from fires surrounding Lake Isabella area. It was thick between Pearsonville and Red Rock Canyon state park with winds pushing smoke to the east.

@npub1rky…0xq2 ahh I see. It’s a menu stack button now that used to be a single profile button that behaves differently now if you tap on vs hold. Same as always I guess.

How the hell do you get to your profile in @npub1rky…0xq2 now after the update?

😇 When you get to take the thousand foot gravel escalator straight down. Doesn’t work the other way for some reason.

My filters are working great on Mastodon, not so much on LinkedIn. Just had to unfollow a former colleague who’s interacting with too much political content that’s spamming my feed.
LinkedIn has a good “not interested” feature on any feed post that lets you block the original poster not your friend that interacted with it (works), or block the topic (kinda works), or *new* block political content (doesn’t work). So you get mixed results and end up blocking your friend 😕
