Basically little stuff is like 15% mayyyyyybe 20% of my personality. The rest of me is... Idk I feel like the rest of me is just very incongruent with most everyone else in the fandom. Oh... yeah I guess the weird... "hey its hanging on a black screen for 90 seconds..." might cause normal people to become impatient and then reboot... which would kill things. TBF I just let mine do the thing the first time and when I realized it just too an extra 90 seconds or so because reasons then I just started going and making coffee or something while it booted because I know its gonna happen and I know when its going to happen lol.
Regardless that should be taken care of here shortly. Nvidia drivers have been getting better and while wayland kinda jumbled things up for a bit, now that Xorg is pretty much in maintenance only at this point the support for wayland has only been getting better. Also while ubuntu HAS a dedicated driver installer, its a liar. It will list 3 separate drivers, all of which are fairly non-descript and only one of them doesn't result in nuclear annihilation of your system. I feel like I recall Fedora KDE having a similar kind of thing baked into Discover but I could also be wrong. My current install, while working, is hosed the moment I go to run an update so I've been stuck on Windows 11 until I can fix it.

i've literally never had a single issue with nvidia drivers inside of Fedora - at least for KDE spin. Maybe I'm just stupid lucky but I've noticed that most of the subreddit seems to share my opinion as well.
I used the RPM Fusion method and well... I install fedora, I add the repository, I hit update, and I reboot... It's been transparent for me for the most part.
Also Ubuntu is shit now and no one should ever touch it as a first distro - just my 2 cents though.
Mint is... fine. It's mint. If you like it you like it - if you don't, you don't and you move on. Debian is prefers stability too much for it to be a recommendation for any beginner imo... also, if you ask for help and haven't bothered to learn 'the debian way" then be prepared for an angry mob (aka not beginner friendly). Zorin is chill - probably one of the better recs but it does need a paid license to enjoy it to the fullest - imo at least.
Bazzite and the other immutable based distros are super good as long as people don't really want to use anything other than web browsers, maybe kdenlive, and steam. The second you want to install anything that's not a flatpak or do some dev work that requires file system interaction outside of /home - your nightmare begins.
I've stuck my mother and everyone else I know on Fedora KDE. Its relatively stable and doesn't try to niche itself so hard into one thing that it alienates other possibilities. Most everyone I've stuck on it has stuck with it and whenever I see videos of people trying linux and hating it - they usually stop hating it the second they try out Fedora. YMMV though.

Vibe-coding is relying ENTIRELY on generative-ai to create your application. You create, modify, build, push changes to and from, etc etc ALL by chatting with a bot.

Also I ordered the Galaxy Tab A9+ in the 128GB/8GB variant. Its probably a stupid purchase but I've been interested in exploring how a tablet might actually work for me. The A9+ isn't very powerful generally, but also I don't tend to use my laptop for especially demanding tasks when I'm out and about anyways so I'm curious to see if something like a lower spec device might be just the ticket for me.
I mean I sorta initially bought it just to play call of duty mobile and not destroy my phone because of it - but the more I've looked at it the more I've kinda started to think about tablets a little more like a "better netbook" and not like a big awkward screen that doesn't really fit into any use case.

Okay so I've fixed my mothers laptop.
I think it was a UEFI/Secure Boot issue with the system failing due to a key mismatch. I reset the key store and reset the bios back to stock entirely and it showed up finally... which means that fedora pushed an update that somehow updated the keys of the internal ssd incorrectly and caused a mismatch......... which is fucking bullshit. Secure boot is fucking trash and is only a thing because Microsoft tried to EEE the fucking desktop OS market a little over a decade ago. It's literally just another onion layer for DiD - which, fair, is another layer... but god damned the tradeoff in fucking end user frustration isn't worth the benefit it provides imho... at least not the way its currently used/implemented.... but I'm just a nobody so I guess I'm the idiot.
TL;DR: Secure boot is trash and anyone defending it has never had to deal with it fucking up.

My mothers nvme drive decided to unalive itself tonight - at least that's my assumption. If I boot to uefi I can see it in the boot order but also it starts to boot and then... fails - can't find the disk. I mounted a live USB and ran lspci and nothing. Ran the partition manager and the only thing showing up is the Zram and the USB so I'm fairly certain its a dead drive.
Just trying to figure out if I want to order an nvme enclosure to test it out before buying a new nvme drive or if I just want to go ahead and get another one.

I got super into call of duty mobile lmao. I didn't realize how good the mobile games had gotten. Genuinely looking at a tablet to offload the game from my phone lol.
I actually got pretty decent with the touch controls too. I even switched into the 4-finger claw style that all the really good folks supposedly used and spent a few days tweaking my hud.
I'm not as good as keyboard and mouse yet - but I'm actually better than my controller gameplay which is awesome.

this may sound stupid but... I just came to a realization that the reason I'm so hesitant and spooked of reinstalls and whatnot right lately is because of the data that I have on them and the idea of either losing or having to restore from backup just to get back to okay is terrifying to me...
...so... I'm actually now kinda toying with the idea of building a NAS and mapping it so that ALL of my data goes to that and only my OS's are installed locally. Like, have /home/ on my NAS for example.
That would mean that I could just wipe the drive and reinstall and have ALL my data just be there all the same. I think I might work on that idea a little bit. Would be nice not having to worry about data loss constantly. Mild PTSD from having a really important drive brick itself about 7 or 8 years ago.

i'm starting to realize that the difference between me and most other people in this fandom is that I don't have a bug up my ass 24/7 and I don't give a single fuck what you say or do for the most part.

It now generates an RTP stream, offers a link to it and plays a video file up to a designated, file-stored timestamp and then plays an assortment of commercials between a minimum and maximum value and then returns to the episode when it is finished with the commercial segment.

I hate that I just can't manage to watch Bluey all that much. I'm just too emotionally damaged as a person I think. Bluey drives me to tears EVERY fucking episode. There is not a single episode that comes on that doesn't feel like its driving a rusty knife right through my heart. Kinda sucks - but also it's nice knowing that there's a show out there that's actually conveying the real magic of youth. I just wish I could actually watch it without having an emotional breakdown every time.

If its Ubuntu it's most likely EXT4 for the underlying system as I believe that's the default they use unless they've done something new in the past 3 years (which is totally possible). Fedora has been the odd one out lately as it has been defaulting to BTRFS for its filesystem for a few versions now. Really threw me for a loop to be quite frank since I've not the slightest clue about the BTRFS filesystem but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you have to learn somehow so I just rolled with it. Been solid so far.

Perfect! That's definitely the correct way of going about it. As a heads up btw, NTFS is super useful if you want to share files between other PC's not running linux, but if you ever just want to solely use a drive under linux I'd suggest EXT4 as it has way better longevity and is healthier for the drive in my opinion (NTFS fragments worse than EXT4). You can't see those drives under windows without some special software though so that advice is only if you ever just go linux only. 🐧

No - if you're able to mount it and save things to it and retrieve things from it then it has already been reformatted. Might have happened as a part of the zeroing process. I'm not entirely sure how you went about it but it sounds like everything is all done and working correctly if you're already using it.

I've not had anyone do that to me in a long time and yeah, usually the ones that did it were those who were usually seeking some form of self-centered gratification. They want to be right, not consider the possibility that they might be wrong. Considering another viewpoint takes energy, willpower, and empathy and there's just an overwhelmingly large amount of folks who aspire to be that and then fall short without realizing it. I don't think they do it intentionally, but it is annoying and I'm glad I've mostly managed to dodge it the past 5 years or so.

I think someone else already said this but no. Zeroing out a drive just ensures a blank slate. It's done all the time with government and police stuff before it's auctioned off (assuming its allowed to be). You'll need to reformat it afterwards, but the process is no different that with a standard, blank, out-of-the-box drive.

Yeah I'm fairly certain I'm just gonna pick up surfshark for like 50 bucks or so off. Those opening deals usually give like 2 1/2 years or 2 years or so so when surfsharks closes and they want me to go full price I'll just cancel and move to nord or someone else that has the same kind of discount thing going on. Rinse and Repeat... sorta my planned strategy at the moment.

we do get local on the 8's! Along with a very slow Google TV app that also lets me check the weather with a PiP thing going on. I just do their streamtwc thing since it is so cheap.
I've actually been meaning to get a VPN since my state was a dip shit state and did the adult content blocking thing. Probably gonna pick that up on the next 2 or 3 months.

I use SponsorBlock on my desktop which is where I mostly watch stuff and it usually autoskips that stuff. If it doesn't then I make my number go up by adding in the sponsor segment to sponsorblock for the video and farm karma off it lol :p. Of course my tolerance for ads in general is incredibly high. I pay 3 bucks a month for the weather channel which is basically just "The Ad Network" at this point considering an entire 10 minute slot the other day was taken up by them just playing the new iPhone commercial I shit you not 8 times in a row, back-to-back.

Wi-Fi triangulation is used for general location services when cellular data is completely disabled - otherwise it just uses the local towers for triangulation. Phones use multiple systems to get your precise location and the cellular data layer, while playing a large part, is only just a part. Android and probably iPhone will also ping off of each other for triangulation as well in a sort of giant mesh network. Its primarily how Google manages to determine traffic for Maps. Airplane mode should completely disable pretty much all of the services that could be used to locate you however, these days things are so tightly integrated that my recommendation for 100% avoiding triangulation is genuinely to just throw the phone in a tin foil bag.

Being able to have my stupid onboard ai thing generate me a wallpaper with Everest from paw patrol in it is awesome. I wish I didn't have to resort to AI for it but they just DONT have the stock available for me to make what I want and after years of being unhappy I'm finally at least sorta content, though it still slops itself on the puptag logos. I'll take that tradeoff considering my patience.

My back is trashed this evening. fml.
On a positive note I did some conversing with the AI after managing to bully it into giving adult advice and bought a different sized chastity cage off amazon that's been very, very comfortable the past 2 days.
I'm upset that it's kinda larger than I'd like at 2.3 inches or so. I never really realized how... idk if dysphoric is appropriate here or not but uncomfortable at the very least to have a larger sized cage. I'm so used to the micro, nano, and nub style cages that anything larger than 32mm feels almost invalidating at times.
Still - it doesn't look *terrible* and so far it has been nigh on invisible to me at night - which is where I need it the most because without a cage I can't use diapers properly. Thaaaaaanks body.

Yeah but telegram doesn't let me asynchronously stream my balatro session to my friends why they call me shit in real time for missing a full-house and watch as I cry on cam. That's really the biggest thing for my community. Without asynchronous Go-Live and webcam support, it just can't fill that void.
As for telegram - its days are numbered. I just don't know what will replace it but something will eventually and I doubt its signal - especially now that it has a bit of a reputation.

Yeah discord is headed to enshittification. I told my community the day they voted to move to discord back in 2018 that it was a bad idea because of the privacy and eventual enshittification, but they decided to ignore me and I moved us anyways because that was what we all wanted.
Now they're seeing I was right. Hopefully matrix or another similar piece of chat-tech actually manages to get off the ground before it fully enshittifies, otherwise I'm going to be hardcore stuck and that sucks. I mention matrix more out of hope they actually decide to take the discord direction instead of the fucking teams/slack direction which is what they currently look like they're doing :\

to be fair - its their design philosophy and that hyper minimalism that I dislike. They definitely have stripped out functions over the years and replaced them with lesser versions or nothing typically. It's impossible really for me to scream directly about nautilus without me screaming vehemently about how much I dislike the direction of Gnome because they've worked so hard to make every single one of their apps inextricably linked in some way or the other to the underlying DE. Dolphin used to be very rough around the edges but it's gotten a lot better over the years and I just don't see that same level of polish coming from nautilus. It doesn't feel polished or streamlined to me - it just feels basic and more like a toy than an actual file browser/manager.

They had for a time removed the ability for you to call and xdg-open on executables just by double clicking from the file browser. If they've rectified this then consider it null I guess.
The lack of desktop icons doesn't matter because it's another instance of nautilus assuming that only gnome tech is what it will be dealing with. That's sorta outside the point though - they basically made it (to my knowledge) to where you can't launch desktop apps through .desktop shortcuts.
I don't really like their dedicated network tab but I'm mainly referring to their inability to let me pin custom folders to the sidebar directly - if they've changed this its big news to me.
Here's the discussion on removal of more nautilus assets - though I should note its in support of more customization not less - though I'm sure they'll find a way to fuck it up.

The plugins and extensibility thing are stuff I bring up because Dolphin has a whole plugin store you can browse to mod it. Anything you want, you can make it do - nautilus is strict and the exact opposite. You do it the nautilus way or you hit the road. I have no idea how you wrote a plugin for nautilus unless they somehow just started allowing plugins/extensions natively for it - in which case, wow... they actually did something holy shit.
Toggling between breadcrumb menu and filepathing is okay, but it took way to long for them to fix that and the fact that they didn't bother to address it any sooner is just proof to me that they have priorities in places I don't care for.
As for finder being a shit file-browser - yeah. That being said, Nautilus give off huge apple vibes to me. It's laser focused, stripped down, hides a shit ton of functionality that it does have, and tries to provide as little as possible to get out of your way. Nautilus is just something that, over time, has become a husk of its former self. I'd actually consider thunar to be more feature rich at this point and that's kinda crazy for me to say.
