This is one of the best descriptions of AI that I have read so far:

I appreciate what these service members are expressing, and I do empathize. I'm sorry they are in the terrible position of feeling bound to follow orders their consciences can't support.
But the difficult reality of these considerations is two-fold:
one, they placed themselves in this position, because it is always and ever the gamble a soldier takes by signing up;
and two, there was never a soldier who *wasn't* a political pawn, for that is the nature of the military beast.

PEOPLE
I think I want to move my blog from Wordpress to Ghost.
From what little I've researched thus far, Ghost seems to have good tools for accomplishing this.
But I am utterly unversed in the ways of The Programmer and ignorant of 99.99% of technical jargon.
I also have ADHD and ***loathe*** new user interface. (One of the reasons I want to leave Wordpress is that the UI has become revolting over the past few years.)
SO.
Will this be easy enough for layfolk such as I to accomplish?

@nprofile…cm0q I doubt I'll ever get away from fantasy and sci-fi as my fave genres, so unfortunately Pulp Fiction doesn't make my top 5. But I thoroughly enjoyed the revisit and will definitely *not* let so much time go by before I come back to it again! I'd forgotten the plethora of excellent one-liners -- really, the dialogue overall is brilliant. And Jackson, Thurman, Travolta, and Rhames are just an utter delight to watch at their craft. And lest I forget Plummer, Roth, and Willis -- STELLAR.

"A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor the brain activity of essay writers given access to AI, search engines like Google, or nothing at all. Those who could rely on AI showed the lowest cognitive activity and struggled to accurately quote their work. Perhaps most concerning was that over a couple of months, participants in the AI group became increasingly lazy, copying entire blocks of text in their essays.''

@nprofile…p6ac Unfortunately, the system is functioning exactly as designed. They consider the people they've arrested and imprisoned to be of no value, so they simply don't care about preserving those people's health, safety, rights, or dignity. Our government, via ICE, has created this system specifically to eliminate these people.

"You don't get good stories with AI."
--David Beazley, aka @nprofile…s7hs
This. This is the core of what's wrong about human use of AI.
Humans thrive on Story. The tales we hear and read. The experiences we share. The narratives we tell ourselves. Story moves us forward as individuals and as a species. Without good Story, we stagnate and get really stinky. Eventually, we die.
Using AI might be *a* story -- but it's a bad one. Incoherent, poorly told, soulless, and BORING.

But here are 3 things I keep as standard practice:
1. If your bio is empty or brief to the point of non-communicative, it is highly unlikely I will ever follow you back.
2. If I see that your posts consist mostly of "hi" and "hello" @'ed to people you've recently followed, I'll assume you're a bot or something and block you.
3. If I don't follow you and you @ me "hello pretty" or "hi sweet" or similar bullshit, I will block you.

#TIL something about the word "parlous."
I already knew "parlous" as a form of the word "perilous" associated with English spoken in the western and mid-western USA. Most likely, I got that from Western films or maybe cartoons of Yosemite Sam & Bugs Bunny. Who knows. The phrase that sticks in my head is: "I'm parlous thirsty, ma'am."
But today, I learned that "parlous" was used in #MiddleEnglish, so possibly as far back as the 1100s! 😮 Def not the #OldWest!

Sometimes I think about #Gattaca and how we all leave our DNA all the fuck over the place and it kind of squicks me out a little on both a stomach-churning level and an existential dread level.
I need to introduce 12yo to that movie. It's so damn brilliant and prescient, and it's been way too long since I've seen it.

I grew up in Germany with US-American citizenship. I was on US military bases on a nearly daily basis. We were always told that when you set foot on a US military base, you are stepping onto US-American soil. Born on a US military base to at least one US-American parent? You're a US citizen.
This is always how it has worked, and the US government has fucked this man over.

@nprofile…v0ps Oof, I feel this. I keep having moments of asking myself why the hell everything feels like an uphill battle, and I wonder (yet again!) if I'm just doing life completely wrong--
--and then I remember that oh yeah, I happen to be living through the USA's final degeneration into fascism, and I think, "Of course everything is ten times harder right now. Of course."

Opal Lee walked 1,401 miles/2255 km. At age 89.
At age 12, she live through the torching of her family home by 500 white rioters. It happened on June 19, 1939.
"The fact that it happened on the 19th day of June has spurred me to make people understand that Juneteenth is not just a festival."
President Biden signed the Juneteenth holiday into law in June 2021 and awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024.

Today is #Juneteenth, the US-American federal holiday commemorating and celebrating June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them 2 1/2 years earlier.
Former slaves celebrated this day as early as 1866. From September 2016 to January 2017, activist #OpalLee, then age 89, walked from Ft. Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C, as part of her ultimately successful campaign to get Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday.

Keep aware, #Oklahoma. We're looking at a storm reaching from south #OKC all the way up into #Kansas. There are #tornado warnings for some counties.

I'll post pics later. Right now I need a warm shower. It started raining while we marched, and we stood in the rain for more than 2 hours.
It rained. They didn't leave.
It thundered. They didn't leave.
It lightninged. THEY DIDN'T LEAVE.
For what it's worth, for however long it lasts, I'm proud of you, #OklahomaCity. We showed up. And like true Oklahomans, we didn't let the weather stop us!

Y'ALL.
I just got home from the #NoKings protest in #OKC.
Early numbers reports and a statement from the rally podium say THIS WAS THE BIGGEST PROTEST IN #OKLAHOMA HISTORY.
It was gorgeous.
We marched for about 1.2 miles to the rallying point outside City Hall. This took about 30 min.
Spouse & I were with 5 friends (3 more joined us later). By the time we had been at the rallying point for 20 min, the marchers further back WERE STILL COMING.
Literally every flavor of human represented.

Sad day. RIP Loretta Swit. 😔
"Loretta was a supremely talented actor. She deserved all her 10 Emmy nominations and her 2 wins. But more than acting her part, she created it. She worked hard In showing the writing staff how they could turn the character from a one joke sexist stereotype into a real person — with real feelings and ambitions. We celebrated the day the script came out listing her character not as Hot Lips, but as Margaret. Loretta made the most of her time here.”

Okay, #LanguageNerds --
Do we know what English word was used for "tattoo" before Brits brought it to Europe from Polynesia? Was it just "painted skin"? Did "tatau" get incorporated into European languages *because* there wasn't a one-word equivalent?
Apparently, Icelandic has a nifty modern(?) term: "húðflúr," which would mean "skin/hide embellishment."
So yeah, any pre-18th-century English words for #tattoo?

The goal of the companies who run AIs is to
1. get us all to use AI until the point where
2. we're dependent on AI, then
3. remove all access to AI and
4. grant the privilege of use only to those who pay a monthly fee,
5. which will periodically rise
6. while the service becomes worse and worse.
It'll be enshittification of enshittification.

When I was 4 and started asking questions about how the baby got in the lady's tummy at church, my mom bought age-appropriate books and read them with me. They stayed in my bedroom bookshelf as the years passed, we read them together,I read them alone, and both of my parents checked in with me regularly & remained open to any questions I had. When puberty hit, I knew exactly what was going on.
And since we were in Germany, human sexuality was a unit in 5th grade biology class.

I sure am glad that the first thing I saw when I opened the Mastodon app was the image I just reposted of the orangey named Rocket who has an obsession with coffee. A needed laugh.
Because I got on here to say I just found out that the mom of one of my 12yo's best friends -- we've known this family since the two girls were in kindergarten together -- the mom had been diagnosed with cancer and the surgeon "didn't give much hope" and I am not okay.
Fuck cancer. FUCK CANCER. I hate this so much.
