@nprofile…y5nd not sure where this is coming from but fwiw the folks I worked with on a day to day basis during my 9 years there were excellent particularly at fundamentals, ie stuff that is not as well represented in the general dev population. I've seen both and there's a big difference. That said, big company incentives tend to obscure that.

Quick wrap up of my Greenlight experience for anyone interested. They make it pretty easy to spin up a core lightning node running on their infra, and interact with it via API. No need to wait for the full blockchain to sync, it just springs to life and is up to date or very close.
The node is ephemeral, appearing just-in-time when you want to interact with it and stays alive as long as you're using it, then goes off line to keep the infra costs low.

Has anyone messed with Greenlight? I managed to create a node and an invoice using their python samples, but attempts to pay the invoice from breez fail with no route, and fail silently from getalby's web ui.
Digging further, the node doesn't appear to have any peers. I think this fits in the category of stuff that greenlight aims to abstract away from the developer. Any ideas for an LN n00b?

Screenshot of the iPodder approach to discovery. The Directory tab was backed by a list of OPML urls. These were remote-edited by their respective owners, and pulled on demand when the user expanded the node. On expanding a node, users would see a list of podcasts they could subscribe to. Also, users could add or remove directory roots as they wished.

As a byproduct of the lookup service ingests, we can run some fun queries...
Here are a couple of charts that look at feed moves, where the rss feed domain changes week-on-week for the the same podcast_guid, tallied up by move-in and move-out domains for the past few months.

Lookup service jobs are now reasonably factored, version controlled, and mostly automated.
Import/ETL/publish jobs run on AWS Glue and can scale essentially infinitely.
Storage/serving is S3 and will be online basically forever as long as I keep up with the AWS bill.
Incidentally, my oldest S3 bucket will be old enough to vote in the US starting Tuesday.

@npub1df6…ns3a @npub1ln5…xyw6 @npub1yz5…s0hx ah, thanks Adam, this is useful and consistent with the direction we're going since Boostagram Monitor is in PC20's value block (and not the remoteItem's).

2024-03-16 13:20:38 GMT

Question as I continue to noodle around with guids.
How to handle per-user feeds, e.g. the ones you get with a paid subscription? The feed itself usually has a special token in it somewhere, such that you wouldn't share it publicly or use it as a reference.
Two relevant questions:
1. Do we have a namespace element that designates a feed as a per-user feed? A not-great heuristic is to look for the presence of block tags.
2. Do we have a way to designate the public version of a per-user feed?

2024-03-16 13:14:17 GMT

@npub1ln5…xyw6 @npub1yz5…s0hx think I finally got remote_(feed|item)_guid working in the way that helipad is looking for in order to display the song name up top.
But it's not doing what the blip says it should do.
https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace/blob/main/value/blip-0010.md#fields
Or at least the language can be improved, assuming I've implemented intended behaviors.
Preference for how/where to discuss? Happy to submit a PR or github issue, whatever y'all prefer.

@npub1df6…ns3a ...that way, the owners of PodcastIndex.org know that they got their value via Terrible Fight, which be otherwise a bit harder to derive.
Which I _think_ is the intent of these TLV records as per the latest draft of blip-10.
Time for a glass of wine heheh.

2024-03-03 01:11:15 GMT

@npub1df6…ns3a ok no worries, appreciate the debug 🙂
Before my brain fries, here's what that payment did.
Bball has a valueTimeSplit for the song "Terrible Fight" starting at 3:00.
I sent a 1000-sat boost at 5:21 during that valueTimeSplit. Terrible Fight's value block got 75 percent of that as per the split rules.
Terrible Fight's value block includes a split for PodcastIndex.org (woohoo!).
The boost to PodcastIndex.org uses remote_(feed|item_guid) to point back to Terrible Fight.

2024-03-03 00:08:57 GMT

- reply

@npub1df6…ns3a hmm looking at the Podverse screen grab and starting to wonder if I'm off track.
Why? The screen grab has a payment to Boostagram Monitor, but Boostagram Monitor is not in the value block for the song "Rising Free" (ie the remoteItem's value block).
Looks like what's happening is that remote_feed_guid and remote_item_guid are communicating which valueTimeSplit block in the pc20 feed the user was listening to when they boosted.
Is that the intention?

2024-03-02 23:49:31 GMT

- reply

@npub1df6…ns3a oh hang on now, check out the uuid field in my screenshot vs yours, they're different! So you got a direct split to bball, but there should also be a n indirect payment to podcastindex.org with a uuid that matches the one in my screen grab, and _that_ one should have the remote details.

...Happily Deno Deploy and Cloudflare Workers support long lived websocket connections.
But to really get the most out of podpings, you need an always-on process that can send notifications to non-running PWAs. That requires a dedicated server process and Web Push.
The latest umbilical adds support for that, and requires a deployment to an always-on platform.
It's still early days and I'm learning a lot, so comments, feedback, push requests and whatnot are very welcome.

v0.1.0 is up. https://github.com/aegrumet/umbilical
Podping turned out to be a pretty rich topic. Umbilical started as a stateless http proxy, suitable for deployment on edge worker platforms like Deno Deploy and Cloudflare Workers.
Podping adds a couple of new twists. The last release added a websocket proxy, enabling podpings to trigger PWA feed refresh. But this only works when the client is running, and only for edge worker platforms that support long running websocket connections...(continued)

@npub1vpk…092y Awesome, feel free to give it a spin, and ping with any questions.

Idea: if we can't have zero hosted services, what if instead anyone could stand one up. A lifeline that runs the bare minimum, is easy to stand up, and cheap to run...

@npub1vpk…092y @npub1pa0…pfyr agree. It'd be nice if there was a Creative Commons style explainer and boilerplate configs.

@npub1df6…ns3a @npub1ln5…xyw6 one of the feeds that falls back to proxy, in my hands at least, is PC20 😱
I think the redirect from mp3s.nashownotes.com to feeds.podcastindex.org needs to set the cors header.
Does that make any sense?
% curl -s -D - https://mp3s.nashownotes.com/pc20rss.xml|head
HTTP/2 302
server: nginx
date: Wed, 18 Oct 2023 05:00:01 GMT
content-type: text/html
content-length: 138
location: https://feeds.podcastindex.org/pc20.xml
strict-transport-security: max-age=63072000
<html>
<head><title>302 Found</title></head>

Thinking out loud about how to eliminate hosted-proxy dependency for PWAs. Seems that
1. Feed host has to set the CORS header. Including for redirects.
2. Feeds have to be served over SSL.
Not positive about the second one, but pretty sure. Since SSL is required to install a PWA, http feeds are mixed-content.
