I remember being warned off Street Fighter 2 for the GB. I suspect that was sound advice. I ended up with a SNES a little later anyway ^_^
That said Mortal Kombat 4 on the GBC wasn’t entirely terrible.

Those are two cans of worms 😂
Lots of the Rings is SOOO LONG. I’ve seen them all, haven’t gone back to watch again. Undeniably great movies but they’re a lot.
Star Wars is IMO best approached as “science fantasy” fun. It doesn’t make sense, some of it’s lore is dodgy at best, but it is a lot of fun ^_^

Batocera has been great when I’ve played with it in the past. It’s perhaps a tiny bit fiddly to get set up (a few nuances really need you to SSH in or get command line up) but a lot really just does work “out of the box”.

absolutely. Then the very technical type people get on well with it because, well, tinkering lol. Gamers are increasingly good with Proton doing amazing things. Windows will be left with that sliver of users who I whimsically describe as “knowing enough to be dangerous” 😜

I’m guessing you have some particular use-case it’s falling over on, which sucks. For the average, especially non-technical, person a stable distro like Mint is a solid long term option.

Microsoft keep trying to grip tighter and tighter yet slowly, but surely, more people are actively asking "surely there's a better way" and are becoming very open to me introducing them to a totally free OS, with free updates with no arbitrary end point, that respects their right to their hardware and data, and runs so much quicker. People like it. The times are changing.

Setting up a Win 11 machine at work. What a truly horrible experience. Bugs me trying to coax me into this or that for so so many screens.. then tries to sell me an M365 sub, then offers me a discount, then goes "hey did you know you can use it still for FREE??". Manipulative, exploitative, and just horrible.
Linux Mint? Install, then "hey, here's your PC.. have fun!".
"Sold" someone's 18 year old on Linux recently. Repurposed an old Macbook into a Linux Mint machine and he's well chuffed.

Perhaps not as such however it is a good way to have an easy to use way to quick-post content without having to navigate a full-blown website CMS. As easy as Wordpress is to use opening a page, typing words, and clicking “post” is far easier & quicker for the already over loaded small business owner.
They can signpost to that instance or embed it on their website or whatever. Their customers don’t *need* to interact with it more than a website.

more and more non-tech-savvy people are becoming aware of very easy to use VPNs. The more governments implement misguided legislations and blocks the more people will discover they can safely bypass all of that with a couple of clicks. Meaning governments will have a challenge in their prized surveillance programmes (oh noooo.. anyway..)

absolutely! I forget the number but I also heard that once an AI was thrown at radio telescope data it found more exotic-planets in a few months that human had been able to sift out of the data since we started looking.
In these contexts is extremely powerful and THAT is where the billions of funding would make a real impact. Instead we have OpenAI saying “we want to scoop up all your data and expect to make a $1bn loss”. Crazy.

Pattern-matching number-crunching AI in fields of research is fantastic.

One of the big reasons I like to mod my older consoles is exactly that - access to saving and transferring data! It’s also helpful to be able to backup games from the Wii Shop since it closed.
There’s friendly community of #retrogaming around here (and Reddit and there’s a Discord if that’s your thing) that may be able to help if you give it a whirl and have questions ^_^

looks like it’s one-way, once on the Wii U can’t officially move back to a Wii only another Wii U
I say officially as both Wii and Wii U consoles can be fairly easily modded to allow more access to things like save data and copying it off the console.
There are some excellent fairly easy to follow guides (albeit a basic technical knowledge helps) to get modded and a helpful community that made the extra apps to help with it all - but it is a little fiddly and time consuming

a lot of Wii U hardware has failures due to some component that hasn’t stood the test of time 😞 which is pure suck.
Fortunately regular Wii consoles are pretty hardy and still, for now, pretty cheap. Picking up another regular Wii may still yield good times.
The Wii remains a *fantastic* console that is so much fun and IMO worth finding another of.
No need to “keep up” if you’re having fun ^_^

I’ve got a good stash of Lego that will land in my small human’s hands once they’re old enough for it - Lego is expensive but fantastic value for money considering it just lasts and lasts. I’ll be happy with the duplo out for now, though we have been keen to reduce how many toys are out at once then cycle them now and then when boredom appears to creep in.

to be fair you’ve been given over a year’s notice. Plenty of time to assess if Wireguard can work for you or if you’d be better hopping to another VPN without having to rush anything. Seems pretty decent compared to most places that just arbitrarily announce a feature is going away with zero notice.

I very much enjoyed Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary. A massively fun jaunt that absolutely held my attention! I’ve caught some reviews criticising some of the tropes it trots out but for me in the context of the story being told they worked well.
Next I’ve started Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time. A few chapters in and this already has me hooked.
All “read” as wonderfully performed audiobooks. I am time-poor right now but my ears are often free.

Been using Mint for a while now and I really like Cinnamon but thinking Mate might be slightly snappier on my 7+ year old laptop (i5, SSD, 8gb ram).
In day to day I suspect the window management keyboard shortcuts (super+up, down etc) I'd miss but surely that can be replicated on Mate?

embrace the new! Follow some hashtags to pick up decent folk to follow 😁 I like #RetroGaming of course but have a look around at others.
Alternatively if you don’t want to fill your feed with a followed hashtag (understandable for some of the busier ones especially as you’re on the biggest server) you can “pin” a hashtag in the tweetdeck style desktop view (“advanced” version in web settings) or use something like mastodeck.com to achieve similar also on mobile).

Emulating the Gane Gear and expanding the field of view / visible play area makes its Sonic games really good to play. On a quick look it might even be slightly better for Sonic 1 and 2 than running via Master System emulator..!
Of course trade off is all the sprites a smaller so there's certainly a trade-off for anything also available on Master System but it seemed good fun. So that's Sonic Tripple Trouble added to the Sonic playthrough. Let's chuck in Tails Adventure as well 🦊

This sort of thing, and stories of Google banning users without justification & refusing to reverse, is what lead me to start to take back control of my digital identity. Key thing is owning your email address. That’s the key to almost all your online services.
Then I do my best not to be totally dependent on services that can be revoked from me. Which isn’t to say I don’t use them but I try to have alternative routes in the event of an issue.

Many have been and are increasingly using sustainable power, mostly because it’s actually more cost effective most of the time and they can do a little greenwashing as a bonus.
There are a multitude of reasons to dunk on LLMs / AI but power usage isn’t the “gotcha” many think it is.

I believe it might at last be time to part way with my old friend Game Boy DMG-01.
Many happy years with it enjoyed, a Christmas gift from Dad when I was small, but I’m realistically not going to play it now and not going to subject my little one to it when we have a GBA SP 001 around instead.
Better for it to be enjoyed and used by someone than gather dust in a drawer ☺️
