Years ago, when I was a dance teacher, I applied for work at a local dance studio. They told me that if I worked for them, I wasn’t allowed to teach dance anywhere else. I asked them if they were going to pay me enough that I could afford not to work elsewhere. They said no. So I said no, too. Kinda hard to eat on the proceeds of a couple of one-hour classes a week. Dancing was how I made enough money to live.
Later on, they decided they would hire me anyway, even though they didn’t like that I also taught at seniors centres, community centres, and other dance/fitness studios.
It still boggles me that employers can presume they own you. It makes me realize they want slaves, not employees. #capitalism #WageSlave #dance #GigEconomy

Today is Red Dress Day, in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous people. In Canada, Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people are six times more likely to be murdered than their non-Indigenous counterparts.
