"AI people" is a very vague group. Quite a bit of AI discussion is hype and mis/dis-info and I don't think needs to be coddled here (just as we shouldn't tolerate puppy killers or fascists, even if they're from marginalized groups). Tho there are many shades of gray and I think it's also fair to say some AI discussion is non-hype/mis/dis-info. But my main point is that welcoming marginalized groups should be the focus, not opinions about AI

“AI people” are not a protected class. It seems much more important that we focus on being a welcoming and inclusive platform for protected classes, particularly actual marginalized communities.

Hi Fediverse,
I figured I'd try #GetFediHired since I like the tech ethos here so much more than LI.
I'm a senior QA Engineer/SDET with 10+ years experience. I've built automation solutions in Cypress, Selenium, JMeter, Postman, Grafana K6 and more.
I'm looking for a remote position or on-site/hybrid one in the Seattle area.
I can provide my CV and LinkedIn profile via DM.
Boosts are also welcome.
Thanks

I worry that Elon is looking at other ways of securing his extreme wealth and power. Of course being Trump’s right hand man helps. Seems like obvious options are directing gov’t to fund and otherwise prop up Spacex and starlink, but no doubt other grifts are possible too. He may let Tesla fail if those other options bear fruit. Not that we shouldn’t try to weaken him thru this boycott protest.

2025-03-03 04:52:36 GMT

I went to my third #teslatakedown protest on Saturday, this time in the wealthy Seattle suburb of Bellevue. Great to see another strong turnout of an estimated 350 people and a largely very positive response from passersby. Incidentally, later that day I also traded in my model 3 for a Subaru Crosstrek.
The national (int’l) momentum of this effort is a small bright spot in the fight back. I think there’s a chance it could impact tesla’s sales and stock price in significant way. But…

why the resort to name calling?
That npr article is about Meta underlining this is not a Tiktok only issue and not evidence that China is using Tiktok this way.
It’s hardly debatable that most mis/disinfo on all the big platforms is US rw.
This is not denying that China and Russia have done so.
Again banning TikTok will not stop either of them and will not reduce divisive dis/misinfo

2025-01-18 17:57:04 GMT

- reply

the politco article doesn’t suggest or provide evidence that China is doing this. It’s sounds more related to failures in their content moderation.
What evidence is there of China doing this via TikTok?
There’s considerable evidence as Taylor shared that TikTok has more progressive content. There’s also much evidence that most “divisive” content on all platforms is from US domestic sources

2025-01-18 16:50:08 GMT

- reply

apparently it’s bipartisan. My error.
That said, you started out saying issue is danger of rw rabbit holes, but seemed to shift to concern about Chinese communist influence.

2025-01-18 16:14:42 GMT

- reply

the US is far right controlled now and we see the impact on meta and x which were already bad. And we’ve seen plenty of foreign influence. The ban is being pushed by the rw.

2025-01-18 15:51:13 GMT

- reply

same for other big tech platforms.

2025-01-18 15:39:49 GMT

- reply

regulation with real enforcement seems much more warranted.
Not sure what you’re suggesting about my “of course” being an opinion. Are you saying the US ban is because TikTok is uniquely bad on the rw content issue?

2025-01-18 15:23:35 GMT

- reply

thanks. It seems quite possible for both studies to be true. Of course the right wing content is not why there’s a push to ban it. And as Taylor points out such a ban will not improve the situation and she provides compelling arguments that it’ll make it worse. Meta and the birdshit site provide compelling evidence to support her.

2025-01-18 14:58:47 GMT

- reply

the study she cites looks US based but suggests otherwise. Would seem strange if it was different in other countries but possible. Are you aware of any studies? Of course the ban is only for the US so doesn’t matter much.

I'm not sure now. I'm probably going to pause my migration from gmail to proton until I figure something else out. Fastmail seems less problematic, but will probably review some of the other options listed at https://www.optoutproject.net/secure-email/. I'm also not sure I need Proton's level of privacy (tho the more the better and certainly want better than gmail). No doubt. I suspect making patients more overwhelmed is part of the strategy.
I just had a small example where a provider's online bill pay site doesn't update immediately after making a payment; it takes a few days for manual processing. And, so if you go to the site again, it gives no indication of the payment and lets you pay again.

Switching to a new email service is a big change so comparing to gmail is not a good comparison. Privacy is not the only issue with AI (not to mention crypto). In any case, I'm not asking for input on my decision not to use Proton. (I had asked for more info about Tuta).

2024-10-27 20:13:14 GMT

appreciate the input. I did find the Proton web client pretty solid and usable. And the data import and export are also nice. It’s not so much that I would’ve been directly impacted by the AI and crypto features (at least imminently), but more it being a bad sign that these are business priorities. From what I’ve seen these almost always become extractive/exploitive. Since it’s not a pressing need for me to move off of gmail, it’s worth it for me to look around more.

2024-10-27 19:30:44 GMT
