I'm sorry for the suffering you are both going through and wish a good and speedy recovery. I'm pretty sure that both of you are going to feel immense love during this time which will carry you through and bring even more gratitude than you obviously have already experienced in your life together. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…fl85 Irish soda bread sounds great. I know I enjoyed it a few times. Hope it turns out wonderful. Did you learn in a course or a book or some other way? I've just spent a couple weeks with a book on Perl and have decided that since I'm more familiar with bash, it might be better to learn a bit of it. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…vf35 What a great experience to be a spectator of such a scene. And the patient must have had an even greater experience. Thank you for this story of wonder and beauty of an older person with that spark. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…vf35 config.sh had "ram" for build mode with the upgrade. That gives 6s. I set it to "normal" and got 8s. ram mode is a little faster, and the bigger my site gets, the bigger the difference is likely to be. I like the output of information better, too. Not breaking is also a big plus!! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…vf35 Not a lot of help here. I only have 30 posts. The old takes 7s, the new takes 6s. I put the new one online and nothing seems to be broken. :-) I'll keep the backup, but use the upgrade. Anything in particular you want tested? I ran build and server. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…vf35 Oh, Man! Now I feel so much better about the crazy day I had yesterday. It sounds to me like a way of putting ego out of the picture and thereby being more free. I'm looking for my next opportunity to put this into practice. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…44nk Very nice catch!! I found that program to use since my website files are located in a place that doesn't provide ftp. I'm happy for your success with the transition. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…44nk Do you get the Loomans newletter? I got one this morning that I love. Made me wonder if you saw it too, because I thought you'd like it as well. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k What a wonderful thing it is to have gone through something and then pass on a nod and a smile to another who is now facing into the same thing! Getting older does have its benefits. Beautiful story, Stefano. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I haven't had alcohol for over 15 years and I do like beer. Something about the alcohol just doesn't appeal to me. I've considered trying a non-alcohol beer several times, but haven't done it. And my tests every year are great. I don't know what my reason for avoiding alcohol was. Kind of odd to not know that now that I think of it. Hmmm. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Thanks for sharing that experience. It is uplifting and something that helps a lot! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis Having fun working out doing writing in a terminal. In Linux and BSD I can shift to a nice big black and white terminal with Ctrl Alt F1 (or other number) Changing back to the Desktop on my system uses F7. Anyway in my earliest Linux experience that terminal was all I had for a few months. (as I recall) And I was wondering how it would be for non-distraction to work in a terminal like that. I can tell you it is quite focused. The world went away as I tried out markdown readers (pretty much landed on roll your own with pandoc and lynx) and midnight commander which I am very rusty on. All I need is really an editor and file browser with occasionally taking a peek at the output. When I'm done, I can go back to the Desktop and look at it in color with images. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis Awhile back I installed FreeBSD on a separate partition on a Laptop that I have Windows and a couple flavors of Linux on. It was a chore with lots of looking things up on the fantastic FreeBSD manual and forum. I learned quite a bit. The install was pretty easy, but then I had to install Xorg separately. And then a Desktop. Configure a variety of things like the touchpad. Lots of stuff as root. Quite geeky and fun and taxing and taking a lot of time. I heard about GhostBSD recently and it promised to be smooth and easy. It was. It did help that I had gone through some BSD learning with FreeBSD, but this actually installed the Desktop with some programs and the touchpad even worked. It took me maybe a half hour to get that by magic. It was nice that I already had the setup ready to chainload from Grub. @nprofile…sr9k npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k @nprofile…2gcy I'd like to read it and see if I have anything to contribute. Maybe just comments? npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I got the old BSSG code off a backup and I did not have the problem on my new system. Also tried it on the old system and that worked fine, too. It fails with commonmark, but not pandoc. I must have spelled pandoc wrong when I used it before or commented it out or some crazy thing. I'll edit my comments about the problem at brew to indicate that using pandoc fixed it. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Okay, I'm realizing that this may have more to do with changes at my end. 1. Recently I had to reinstall my Linux OS on a new partition. So I have a fresh install. I also had to install cmark and pandoc on the system. 2. I had changed my config.sh.local to indicate using commonmark instead of pandoc back when I was trying to track down this footnote problem. With the upgrade of BSSG I made some changes to that config file and saw the "commonmark" changing it back to "pandoc." 3. I just now tried commonmark again and the markdown footmark notation was not changed properly. Putting it back to pandoc made it right again. So using pandoc did not work with my old system and the old BSSG code, but either the new system or the new BSSG code has made it so that pandoc, but not commonmark, now parses the footnote markdown properly. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Whoa!! You very quietly fixed my problem with footnotes!! I just now felt inspired to run my test file through BSSG and the footnote markdown now works. Thank you!! I'll have to start footnoting things now. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…pp8p I don't have a smart phone, but I do wonder how much time I spend on various things on my computer. I'd like to find something that could track things like you did with your phone. I'd want a local program, not something out on the Internet. I'd probably benefit just from knowing time spent on sites on my browser. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k @nprofile…dks6 I don't know if the web server my site is on serves pre-compressed assets, but I'm ready if and when they do. My site is tiny, but I love the idea of having this available. I'd never heard of it. I love the new "thoughtful" theme. I'll see if I can wreck it by trying to add a dark mode. As it is the colors are pleasant to the eye--exactly what I would like to read with. Thanks to all contributors! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I like the way you use confrontation. I usually think of it as a negative term, but I see that it is descriptive and need not involve combat, though it may. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Thank you for these stories. They are very impactful. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…2wfe Your story is a warning to me about thinking that a platform is going to continue to give me what I thought I signed up for. What would happen if Amazon dropped the ball like this? Something for me to think about. https://basic.bearblog.dev/when-tech-hardware-becomes-paperweights/ npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Enjoy the day! I'm happy for you both!! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I decided to install FreeBSD. The install seemed smooth (after getting an image with a valid checksum). I chose an partition with an old linux install and reformatted it zfs. I did not choose crypto. It installed quickly and indicated "reboot" which I did, but it goes to Grub and my attempts at using various menuentry found on FreeBSD forum have failed. I tried from grub commandline, too, but "unknown filesystem" is the error. Does this line mean anything to you? '/ROOT/mybootenv@/boot/loader' which would go in the line in the menuentry that is currently. 'kfreebsd /boot/loader' I'm not quite ready to just give the machine completely over to this project, but I'd like to boot the system. Maybe I missed something on the install. A reinstall is easy enough. Meanwhile I'm taking today off from this thing. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Thanks for the information, Stefano. What pops immediately into mind, though probably not the last word, is "Am I too old to be messing with this stuff now?" I guess I want to do it as much as anything else I'm spending time doing. I have an older laptop to play with. So then do I try installing BSD again or try Linux with ZFS? Or forget about it? Might be a good first step for me to try a linux install using zfs on an old laptop. If that works I can maybe get acquainted with the filesystem. Probably best to just put it in the back of my mind for now, do other things, and then see what pops up. I tend to be impulsive and eager to tinker and solve the puzzles. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I noticed that possibility of using zfs and wondered about trying it out. I saw it is used on BSD. I'm using Mint which is an Ubuntu derivitive and ultimately Debian mostly. You chose it only for root. Not for any other partitions? Why is that? npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I think that is the Theory of Relativity: "old" and "new" are relative terms. 20 years old does seem "old" but 2004 seems like yesterday to me. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…pp8p Thanks for that great review, Joel! At first when you said "war across time" I thought of Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War" "The Big Time" doesn't sound at all like that one. Here's my very short review: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/77261d08-0d6f-4179-8a9e-71fc36b730b3 I think I'll give "The Big Time" a try based on what you have said and also that it is short. At least I'll know what kind of trouble I am getting into, so I'll be prepared for the confusion. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Oh, that's beautiful! Is it near where you live? npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Well worth waiting for! It's so helpful to hear your experience and the comments of others who also relate. This is encouraging. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Oh, I was going to say not to rush, but then your post popped up saying it is heere. You are really something!!! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I'm missing that final image that was to come "tomorrow" npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…44nk This made me think of a book I'm reading after seeing this man's video. In fact, the whole surfing thing made me think of you and last year. I decided to trust that he meant I could unsubscribe easily and gave my email address to watch the video: https://www.timesurfing.uk/video/ PS: I already value Step 1. The paying attention to those who distract me was helpful yesterday. And finishing things, even a small segment, and cleaning up after with breathers was also very nice. I may read the next chapter today. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…lvhv I'm not a fan of Richard Stallman, but I think he is on to something with this quote. I've been thinking along the same lines. "Attached" is an important word here, I think. A small example in my life (along with others) is that we recently downsized our freezer. We had a large self-defrosting and when it died after 20 years, we got a 7 cu ft that doesn't self-defrost. This means the inconvenience of defrosting around every 3 months. It also means thinking about what we are buying such that it will fit in there. There are other small inconveniences. But it doesn't run hard and long. And I pat its little side when I go by it. I feel a sense of freedom having made this choice. The money saved is small, but the sense of not having more than we need is empowering. It's caused me to think about what I really need and also think more about what or whom my convenience is causing problems for. My attitude needs to change and a small change moves that process along. Society told me to get a different kind of freezer-larger, more convenient. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…lvhv I haven't worked with the first two on the left, but the rest of it looks right to me and how I feel about Emacs. Your 6 days so far is encouraging. I'm still thinking that for myself "Why bother?" I do use Mutt sometimes for a quick email. Those "Send email" links on websites default to opening Mutt on my system. I wouldn't mind something like that in Emacs. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Yes, I see the general blog in light and the IT blog in dark. I have my browser set to prefer dark. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I'm curious. Are you making changes to reader-mode theme? I wasn't getting the dark I wanted from that. I copied reader-mode and changed the dark mode section to that in longform with @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark). That works for me. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Fantastic! I updated and rebuilt my site. I no longer have the accessibility problems that the online checker found previously. Thank you, Stefano! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…lvhv See, this is how I get hooked into trying it again! You are tempting me. I followed you into the non-plastic cleaning supplies world and loved it. Okay, here's my plan. I'll sit back and watch and see if you mention Emacs again, perhaps especially in a blog post, and see how it goes from there. I will have to be able to hook it together with Obsidian, though! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…lvhv I understand the feeling. I keep laying that particular thing aside. I tried it a long time ago and let it go. I do like to use a terminal text program for some things, but I pick one with keybindings similar to what I already know. I hate getting stuck in vi or emacs with something I've written and not remembering how to get out of a corner I've worked my way into with some mistake. Having to crash the program to get out of it is painful. So, I get the bug now and then and sometimes download the program briefly. I have a little "fun??" and then remove the program. Maybe a couple hours I could have had more fun doing something else, but it's hard to just say "no." Sometimes the thing is like Obsidian or BSSG and it is worth the effort to learn. I think Emacs is something you have to want to "live" in to make it pay off. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Wow! That looks great. Homemade. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Stafano, this way of life -- in my opinion, it shows on your face in every picture I've seen of you! Such a nice surprise that came with my need for a new site generator. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Yes, I was wondering how broken a theme would get if I got rid of those google links. You read my mind - a dangerous thing to do, actually. I was also looking into accessibility and I know so little about it that I started a course at w3c. So, I'm looking forward to this. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…zyjy A whole galaxy. I wonder what all is going on in there. Nice image - brings awe. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…pp8p How about this: 1. Have the website use a different email address so that they go into a different Inbox (I think maybe you already have this) 2. Read those personal emails at home. 3. Answer them there It will take less time than with the copy and paste, etc. Also it will be on your time rather than on work time. I've done things on work time back when I was working. I'm not proud of that, though I always thought it was okay, because I got more done in a shorter time than most people and felt I deserved it. That was a mistake then and it can be an even costlier mistake now. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I love reading your stories. You are such a good story teller!! There are many details and they are interesting and flow together giving a nice mental picture. Thanks for this one. It warms my heart and also gives me some good advice if I'm ever in an earthquake. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I'm curious about BSD and have an extra laptop with dual boot Windows and Linux. Thinking about trying out FreeBSD. Just for fun... https://binsh.dev/multi-booting-freebsd-linux-and-windows/ npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k I'm afraid to look at sensitive material. Question: Was it 3.1? npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis I let go of Jekyll or it let go of me. I needed to change to another static website generator and luckily I had been introduced to one before Jekyll let me down. I had a small problem with the different RSS feed address and posted an inquiry. Stefano (@nprofile…sr9k ) the author of BSSG, added the possiblity to configure the feed address to the code and sent me clear and simple directions. Worked like a charm, so now my old feed address works. https://anitalewis.org/2025/05/12/change-in-blog/ npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k Ooo.. I'm a fan of bluefish from the days when I worked on a website at work. I still use it now and then. Also nice to hear that you might be able to upgrade those older computers in your area! Cheering you on! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…sr9k @nprofile…7dm2 Stefano, I keep thinking about your bash website generator! I'm using Jekyll and it's working fine. But I'm going to have a look at using BSSG. It's fascinating to me that it is written in bash. I know it will take time for me to change over if I decide to do that, but I just gotta try it. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…7dm2 Your Small Web section is so nice. I'm going to have a deeper look at that blog of @nprofile…sr9k Right off the bat I saw mention of the Big Bang Theory and am intrigued. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @nprofile…gv7u I haven't noticed anything about AI on my system. How did you notice Gnome was using it? I don't want any automatic AI on my machine either, actually not any AI at all. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @npub1ggh…ykhp No luck on dessert first here! Our air conditioner stopped working yesterday evening. Looks like we have to eat our greens first before dessert. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @npub1dfh…n8kn Is that a moon close to Jupiter? I heard there might be a sequel. npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @npub15c0…hxke Great job packing all that information into this short video. I appreciate it! npub153h6da9watzpsu39x2ght44qjkd5uch3wmceaacjp2wlplfhzwfs5x38ft Anita Lewis @npub1ggh…ykhp What you say about transitioning from one year to another makes me realize I'm actually doing the same thing. I'm in a 16-week workship on Mortality and 2 weeks in I'm feeling some shifts. Just finding the courage to do it was a major shift for me. So, I don't think it's all that early for your transition. I guess these things come when they come. Here's a link to the workshop to give you an idea of what it's about. In fact, you might find the writings in her blog interesting. https://www.whatashrinkthinks.com/mortality-workshop
