If you're interested in joining the breakouts at the web engines hackfest virtually, you can find information at https://github.com/Igalia/webengineshackfest/wiki#tuesday-16th-june

We have so many customizability features in software that will never be discovered by most people because it is so overwhelming a morass of settings and menus and things. Of all things, it strikes me that this is probably something we could use an intelligent (local and small) bot to improve. Have you seen anything doing this particularly well?

2026-05-14 00:51:32 GMT

What do you think would be different if we'd landed E4X? Would it have changed anything about where we are? Would it be better or worse because of it?
If you're unfamilliar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECMAScript_for_XML - you can see 2004 > JSX relationships etc

Are you coming to @nprofile…gxua's @nprofile…r9vs ? Have something you'd like to talk with people about or show off? Missing @nprofile…cutx breakouts?
We have them too! Submit a breakout:

I really dig that there are companies that fund @igalia.com to do things that try to make the web better for all of us.

New blog post: Under-investment
A few weeks ago I made a comment on the socials about how surprising it is that there's so much stuff in the web platform that needs more attention than it gets. @nprofile…dk2r asked if I could expand on that, here's something

Disappointed to find that a Wikipedia page about an old project i did is gone. I made a bunch of decisions years ago about not keeping the site or domain or etc alive because i figured the Wikipedia article would always be there. Guess not.

It's funny that we verb-ized and tensed "Google" for search generically - so you might say "hold on, googling..."
"hold on, yahooing"
"hold on, binging"
"hold on, ecosiaing"
Do those sound as natural to you? Is it just exposure?

2025-03-11 16:02:21 GMT

We just proposed two topics for @w3c breakouts day:
1. "Vectors of neglect" - @nprofile…5zlq will lead a discussion about why the platform seems to have trouble getting investment in SVG
https://github.com/w3c/breakouts-day-2025/issues/12
2. "Collective funding, governance and prioritization of a browser engine projects" - I (and @nprofile…4wq2) will lead a discussion about some issues facing the platform and efforts toward more collective ownership (and new challenges it introduces)
https://github.com/w3c/breakouts-day-2025/issues/11

2025-03-07 16:17:47 GMT

For a future podcast episode maybe: What is it that you think holds companies up from contributing to open source web engines - either with developer time or monetarily through an organization like Igalia?

2025-02-13 22:09:52 GMT

This probably only makes sense to people in the US, but every time someone approves a PR, I hear a little voice in my head that says
"I'm ${handle} and I approved of this message"
(they do that on political commercials here)

Fun fact from the markup chapter of the 2024 Web Almanac:
% of page loads containing elements with a dash-name went from 2.9% in 2022 to 5.1%in 2023 to 7.7% in 2024 - steady rise!

@npub1c35…9pmh What's the reason it should have a weird possessive form tho?

2024-05-14 14:42:37 GMT

Not sure how unpopular this opinion is but: Using an 's for possessive is the more intuitive thing with "it's" despite being "wrong" and I think we should just all rebel and do that.

That's how lazy I am.

The @npub18xs…mug0 collective has just passed $250/month in individual contributions, most of them recurring. It would be great to see some businesses appearing in here. Developing a novel, memory safe engine is pretty interesting, I think.
