HOW I WON A MILLION DOLLARS
By: X Œ-11
Date: March 14, 2031
Location: Sector 4 (formerly Miami)
Ray promised us the Singularity. He said we’d upload our brains and live as gods. He was half right. The gods exist, but they are predictive algorithms, and the rest of us are just trying to afford synthetic cheese.
It’s 4:00 AM. I’m standing in a McDonald’s that smells like ozone and nostalgia.
On the wall-screen, a stand-up comedian is delivering the nightly news. They’re the only ones allowed to deliver the news these days. He’s breaking down the antitrust lawsuit over the merger between the Scientology Church and Disney. No one is laughing. The President recently hung a crooked, hand-painted sign that says "BELIEVE" above the Resolute Desk, hoping it would stabilize the bond market. It didn't.
I look out the window. Across the street, Lick’s hologram is flickering on a park bench. He died forty years ago, but his node persists. He saw the machines before they spoke.
I adjust my glasses. Not the prescription kind—the Apple Vision Airs etched into my temples.
BING.
A notification floats in the upper right corner of my peripheral vision. It’s Vibesy. If you aren’t on Vibesy, you’re probably dead or Amish.
WELCOME TO MCDONALDS, UNIT 894.
LOGIC THEORIST PROTOCOL: ACTIVE.
WAGER OPPORTUNITY: $500 USD (FIAT).
BET ON: ORDER #69 BEING A FILET-O-FISH.
ODDS: +200,000.
I dig into my jeans. I find a crumbled $500 bill. It’s a relic, mostly used for buying gum or vintage aesthetic.
"Scan it," Lick’s hologram whispers from across the street.
I hold the bill up to my glasses. A red laser grid scans the serial number, instantly verifying it on the Treasury Blockchain and burning the physical value.
"Screw it." I blink twice to lock it in.
The counter droid slides a bag across the stainless steel. "Order 69," the synth-voice croaks.A tired-looking guy in a hazmat suit opens the bag. He pulls out a square, breaded brick.
CHA-CHING.
It hit me like a memory of a future I hadn't lived yet.
My HUD explodes in confetti.
WINNER. PAYOUT: $1,000,000 USD (FIAT).
I stare at the number. One million dollars.
In 2026, this was freedom. In 2031, it’s a decent Tuesday. This is the endgame of capitalism: numbers going up while value dissolves into the ether. The Logic Theorist didn't give me the win because of luck. It analyzed the room, saw the tension, knew my personality, and optimized for social cohesion. It needed a distribution event.
I look around the restaurant. There are twelve people here. A mix of gig-economy drone pilots and sleep-deprived longevity nurses.
I shout, "Yo! Round on me!"
I walk to the kiosk. I order twelve Impossible Big Macs. The meat is printed from soy-slurry and cultured in a vat in Nebraska.
Total: $956,000.
That’s inflation, baby. That’s the cost of eating something that once resembled organic matter. I tap my wrist against the sensor. The transaction clears.
The restaurant erupts. Not in joy, but in mild, dopamine-fueled acknowledgment. I hand out the burgers like a benevolent feudal lord distributing grain.
For a moment, we aren't just data points in a server farm; we are human beings again. Except we’re eating $80,000 sandwiches.
I walk out into the humid night air with $44,000 change.
Nikita wanted a story about winning. But in 2031, nobody wins. We just level up. The fiat burns, the AI laughs, and we keep betting on the vibes?
Man, Elon was right.
This really does feel like a simulation. But standing here, watching the neon lights reflect off the wet pavement, I realize something. Even if it is a simulation, the render quality is incredible.
And despite the chaos, the noise, and the algorithmic gods, there is a restless energy here you don’t find anywhere else on the server.
It’s messy, it’s broken, but it’s alive. Still the best damn country in the world.
I look up at the sky.
BING. It’s Vibesy again.
