I didn’t read the article, (FDD is shit, come at me) but I just finished the reading the paper it linked by the IPC. So this’ll really be my last toot on this. 🤪 As far as I can tell, the conclusion is that there is no doubt that an emergency is occurring in northern Gaza, and although there are some signs of improvements, there is not a single indicator that the situation is anything else but proper shit, aid is needed. Semantics be damned.

It gets even worse, as the politician said “hongersnood” in Dutch with translates to “food emergency”. (IPC level 4). Now I wonder what “famine” is in Dutch. Anyway I said enough about this topic. People in Gaza are starving, aid should be provided and a solution to the war in Gaza has to be found. That’s it.

“It’s not a famine! It’s a food emergency” has “I am very smart” vibes and smells more of wanting to be an edgy contrarian than to actually give a shit about the situation.
If this politician does not want to provide aid to Gaza, he should just say so. Semantics be damned. :-)

The investigation said “we were unable to gather enough evidence to confirm or deny a famine, hence we cannot say there is a famine”. I think it’s pretty irresponsible for a politician to then say “See? There is no famine” and then (and you weren’t aware of this) use this as a reason not to provide aid to Gaza.

And even if they not confirm a “famine” in the most dry and analytical sense, they also mention in earlier reports that malnutrition is running rampant. It’s like saying “don’t worry, only the living room is on fire so let’s wait and see what happens”

The report says that they cannot confirm whether a famine is present because there is not enough data, and actors should not wait with providing aid until there is enough data, as it’s obvious that there is a humanitarian crisis going on.
