@nprofile…l70y I'm 5 years younger than Trump but if/when I become as ill as he clearly was *in his first term* then I'm confident my family will be taking power of attorney over my affairs and looking at care options. His 'cabinet of curiosities' and senior republicans should be prosecuted for abuse of an elderly person, keeping him in place while they pursue their own interests. #Trump #USA #SocialCare

#OldPeopleOfMastodon in the UK. Question for you. In the 1960s my mum occasionally used to get a cordial drink. It was vaguely fruity and very spicy. Non-alcoholic. Mixed with hot water it was something like mulled wine, which I didn't get to taste until 20 years later. Definitely a winter warmer drink. Does anyone know what it was? Or if it, or something similar, still exists?

Farage & Co out-manoeuvred the commission during the Brexit campaign too. UK is good at creating laws but very poor at enforcing them. I wonder sometimes if it's deliberate. It's useful have tough laws you can use on 'them' but quietly ignore when one of 'us' does something wrong

I don't understand the motivation. Is it 'better' to have arrested a darker woman? Does it thrill the Trumpists to see her apparently crying? Is the next step to have Grok strip her too? From the UK the US always looked different but understandable. Now it seems completely unhinged.

You're doing well. When I tried to contact a minister a few years back I was told the minister only responds to mail from constituents and therefore I should contact my MP. My MP's website states he doesn't read all his email but might attend to those flagged by his staff. In this case my message was forwarded to the ministry and I got a standard letter from a minion that sidestepped all the points I raised.

Same in UK. I wanted info and price on a product for a piece I was writing for a boating magazine. Manufacturers don't do media relations I would need a trade account to talk to them. So I phoned a dealer but they couldn't help because all they know is what the manufacturer told them to put on the website. They don't even stock the product, just order one when they make a sale.

I'm not surpporting her case but the 'law of the land' bit implies the law as it is at the time. If the government changes the law...?
Also many other democracies have tribunals of magistrates/judges as we already do in magistrates' courts.
The argument is about where do we draw the line, what alleged crime is so serious it has go to jury trial.
And of course are such courts faster and cheaper whilst being at least as reliable?

It isn't even a debt in any meaningful sense. The government provides a secure savings bank scheme for investors without which 'The City' wouldn't be as successful as it is. It's no more a debt than me having premium bonds is a govt debt. It just suits politicians to use the old household finances analogy to support policies they want to enact (eg low tax, benefit cuts etc) for ideological reasons.

If the government just got on with the business of running the country efficiently and trading peacefully with their neighbours the Russian people would be better off. But efficient government doesn't provide the same opportunities for oligarchs to rip off the state...

1974 we started married life in an HMO but at the time it was just a shared 2 bedroom flat. We rented the former lounge/diner and two single women rented the bedrooms. Shared bathroom and kitchen. It was a nice flat but very crowded. The owners tried to evict us all to sell it but back then there were tenants rights. Things have not improved in 50 years.

We have constituencies for parliamentary elections each with about 70,000 voters. The Electoral Commission move the boundaries around from time to time as populations shift. 300 years back we had 'rotten boroughs' where almost everyone had left but the few that remained still got to choose an MP. But 6? That's mad!

In a deliberately obscured way, we all do. Doubtless there will be fantasy firewalls between the king's 'private' money, the royal family's income from government and government money spent on buildings occupied by royals but ultimately all money comes from government, via the Bank of England. How it's distributed and who ends up benefiting most from it is a political decision no-one is prepared to look too closely at.

It's the dairy industry's dirty secret. Milking cows need to have calves regularly to keep up production. Some female calves are retained to replenish the herd. Some calves are reared for beef but dairy cattle don't make top quality beef in large quantities. So there are surplus calves. Veal is not popular in the UK but it is in France and elsewhere in Europe so a lot of calves are exported.

Not an economist but MMT has it that governments create money by spending on government activities. In many economics that is largely on health, social care, education and infrastructure. None of these are US government priorities so it seems to me they rely on massive expenditure on defence (and aggression) and on payments to arms and equipment manufacturers to keep the economy running. It's a martial state.

Subtle, very English version of this back in the 1980s. I was teaching in a very 'conservative' Anglican high school. It was generally assumed to be the 'best' state (public) school in town. Each year there were more applications from girls' parents than boys. Reason, many parents paid for their boys to go to private school but not their daughters. The lack of ambition is staggering. WW1 showed up how poorly educated many Brits were and prompted a post war education act. The dire state of housing in the 1920s and 30s brought about mass council house building. After WW2 there was a lot of rebuilding needed but still the govt was able to create the NHS, encourage local govt care homes and pass *and fund* another education act. Today's problems are minor by comparison but all our politicians compete to spend as little as possible

There was a Methodist chapel near where I lived as a kid and they were mostly teetotalers so they had Ribena instead of wine. Did God really care? Back then I went to CofE church, was confirmed and the wafers we got at communion looked and tasted like rice. I suppose they might have been wheat but they certainly weren't bread. This was a school that told pupils they must not listen to Karma Chameleon (because Boy George was gay) nor read Adrian Mole (mentions divorce, adultery and Adrian's obsession with his penis). They also reprimanded me in a staff meeting for blasphemy. Strange place.

During the '80s I worked in a church school for a couple of years and we had an end of term carol service in the cathedral. But being a seriously religious outfit they had advent carols. Christmas carols were not allowed until the 'midnight mass'. (Still informally called that in the C of E >400 years after the Reformation).

It's part of the N Ireland agreement, M&S in GB can ship it to NI but it can't cross the border, despite having an 'open border' between NI and ROI. It's madness but the Brexiteers (and DUP) never thought about how it would work.

I went to college in 1970 on a full grant. The economy was struggling but it was accepted that the country needed teachers, medics, engineers, architects... and, yes, writers, artists, actors, directors too. And in order to get a sufficient supply of them of decent quality there had to be grants so smart people from poor families could study. Of course I'm grateful for the benefits it brought me but more than that I think my work as a teacher was valuable to society.

Our bronze age ancestors built in the fens - on stilts. In places where flooding was less common but still possible medieval houses were built with a raised floor and a semi basement that could be used for storage most of the time but could be emptied and allowed to flood from time to time. We seem to have lost the knack of building flood resilient housing.

For reasons beyond my comprehension we seem to be adopting the North Korean option of glorious isolation. And starvation, hypothermia...

The UK NHS Congress in for a lot of criticism mostly from right wing politicians beholden to the finance 'industry'. But it's dealt with my 2 different cancers and continues to monitor my health. Thanks #NHS

For people in the UK, this what too many of our politicians think should happen here.

I don't think any of them existed when I was a teenager. We had to make do with 'Long Life' which was one of the first canned beers named for its shelf life not the effect on its drinkers, Worthington E, and Party 7, a 7 pint tin of crap Watneys. We also had Ted Heath, Wilson, Callaghan, industrial unrest 3 day weeks, power cuts. Until in my 20s the blessed Margaret came to 'rescue' us.

This is the guy who stirred up xenophobia and disrupted the EU whilst married to a German woman. Then following Brexit and divorce bought a property in France with his new French girlfriend. He ought to be a laughing stock but in this weird little country he gets to sit in parliament, when he can be bothered to turn up.

Good grief, in the 1960s a treat for country peasants like my family was to go to one of the big department stores in Manchester(England) that had a food hall and buy a few ounces of exciting sandwich filling. My favourite was cottage cheese and pineapple (don't judge me, I was a child). I didn't know we were woke, I thought we were just poor.

There was a discussion on R4 this morning about journalists leaving X for Blue Sky, but no mention of Mastodon. Considering they are paid to find stuff out they aren't very inquisitive, they just go for the first brand name alternative they've heard of. I suppose the PR muppets do the same and that's how we get our 'news '.

Am I missing something here? Why does a data centre need so much water? Don't they use cooling towers and recycle it?

Having seen the chaos caused when a visiting speaker brought a virus-laden ppt file that attacked our network and also attached itself to USB sticks brought by other speakers that day, it sounds like a good idea.

Streeting's diagnosis is correct but I have no confidence in any treatment plan he might implement. And thanks to the way Devo funding works it'll hit Wales and Scotland too.

Wife has been harvesting her allotment and greenhouse so I've made 3 jars of piccalilli and one of red-hot chilli sauce. Green tomatoes will have to wait until my new mincing machine arrives. #OldPeopleOfMastodon #Autumn #Food #Preserves

Strange how we take work stress for granted. I was sacked in 2006, aged 54. Not ideal but I put together some part time work with freelance techie writing and found I was happier and more relaxed than ever.
