PSA: If you have upgraded to MacOS 27 and have an annoying SiriAI button over all sorts of your text inputs:
sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/WritingTools LightweightUI_macOS -dict Enabled -bool false
will disable it. Requires a reboot.

I almost completely agree on C-x C-f, except when the file is in a really obscure place and in a Finder window.
I just compiled neoemacs and it does seem dramatically faster than my normal Emacs. But isn’t the same, and the cursor animations would drive me insane. No doubt they can be disabled…
Do you compile from source, grab it from https://emacsformacos.com, or something else?
I’ve done both of those and they always seem equally slow.

Really? Make me wonder if I’ve done something wrong. It seems amazing slow on an M1 Studio with 128GB, which isn’t the latest greatest but it no slouch.
Isn’t startup slow?
Isn’t Dragging a file onto it (rare, admittedly) criminally slow?
Isn’t editing a large file with syntax highlight on almost unusably slow?
None of these is huge problem for me as I only start it every few months, don’t often drag files onto it and don’t love syntax highlighting. But they all feel slow. I always assumed it was just Elisp for the first and last and some weird bug for the second.

I have just re-read this after too many decades. Treat yourself if you have any interest in maths, physics, beauty, philosophy, or writing. It contains no equations, though it does discuss a small number.

Thanks. You’re saying it’s too late and I shouldn’t clog up the mail…?
I’m just writing a section advising people on handling text, and it feel weird to tell them to take out ^L. I would never do that. And if I write a function to do “this”, it won’t do “that”…
I won’t bother mailing…whatever the official address is, though, if you’re say “no chance”.

@npub19ua…53cv I’ve just been reading (and am writing about) RFC 9839. Great work.
One thing that surprised me: Your (three) useful controls codes do not include form feed (U+000C). Should it be four?
That surprises me. It seems safe, widely used and useful. You might argue it’s not entirely interoperable, but I would refer you to U+0009, U+000A and U+000D, none of which is free from variations of interpretation!
Is this an oversight? Deliberate? Should I mail you?
Please consider this a Comment on the Request For…

I dunno. Storage apart, more detail always means you can blow up/zoom more. And/or, being able to zoom more when shooting is always useful, if you can stabilise it and make it work. Is that niche? I don’t think so.

Clearing history didn’t help in Safari (on the machine where Safari is downloading) nor for Orion.
I’m largely out of ideas.

Presumably not a weird user agent from Safari and I haven’t changed any settings as far as I know.
Orion seems to be using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/17.4 Safari/605.1.15
The only other thing I can see that looks weird is that when Orion downloads the page it doesn’t add add .html…which it does for a BBC sites. But maybe that’s just how Orion is.
It feels like Orion (and Safari on the other Mac) don’t think they’re HTML pages. But I don’t know why.

If I compare the front page (which works) and an article page, it looks like the front page has Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8, but the article pages don’t?:

@npub19ua…53cv Not sure what’s happened on Ongoing, but if I go to the front page and click an article (Safari and Orion but not Firefox) on Mac (Sonoma), it’s downloading the page, not going through to it.
I’m not seeing it on any other sites.

Untied Kingdom is very clever.
Presumably, shorthand for the geographic area currently called UK with an independent Scotland that retains the monarchy.

Elizabeth Warren said it best.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/elizabeth-warren-there-is-nobody-in-this-country-who-got-rich-on-his-own/
"You built a factory out there? Good for you," she says. "But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did."
She continues: "Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along."
