Last Notes npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson Having a great early #cycling season, with 11 rides in April and more than 800 km on the season already. Of course, now the rains will come and make it more challenging to get out. New #bike, new computer, #Insta360 camera all giving me new incentive to get out there into the gorgeous early spring we've had in temps running from the 40s to the 80s F. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…g5cv Is Guardian anti-trans? (Meant as a genuine question, not a challenge. We've considering where to redirect our subscriptions, having quit Washington Post.) npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…t2ea After years of ignoring the Euro-hate for our American water-boiling ways, we experienced an electric kettle at an AirBnB and decided it would, in fact, change our lives, and got one ourselves. It almost eliminates the wait for anything but the steeping. (We're French press people.) npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson "Let us show you a knife" really didn't take off as a marketing catchphrase. Let's bring it back. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…g5cv And yet Don Heck does have some fans. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson Apparently, in the 1892 New York State census, "tally man" was a job. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…tsn5 Hosting your own site is a pain in the neck but truly seems to be the only option. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…d97q Look what popped up in my feed today: npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…d97q 100% awful. It eventually occured to me that I may never before have shared many of these pictures that I've looked at thousands of times over the years. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson From my #highschool cafeteria in 1977: a friend of mine successfully stacks 10 waxed milk cartons on top of each other – a challenge, as the sides were never perfectly flat. This was one of many ways we killed time at lunch. #OldPhotographs #BWPhoto #filmPhotography #OldPhotos npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…ml4u @nprofile…cxxr Same, as computer typesetting started to take off, I decided to go to grad school for something else entirely. These methods are just gone (while letterpress lives on). I made my living at #pasteup for several years. The earlier stuff was more arty and less focused on standard song structures. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…j4w6 Tried to but can't find you. Just getting set up myself. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson #SyracuseUniversity's Hendricks Chapel on a winter night in 1978. I always had a love of low light shots, even though I wouldn't say I was successful at making them very artful. This one, though, definitely evokes the loneliness of crossing the campus on a winter evening. Short handheld with Tri-X 400. There's dust on the negative but I'm not fixing these in post. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…v3h2 Considerably warmer down here generally but we've been getting the same wind. At 15°F, it's currently 30° warmer than in Raquette Lake (I keep Adirondack weather on my list just because). npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…v3h2 Sun and little or no wind make a huge difference. Especially no wind. The coldest I remember in Syracuse was a Christmas night when it was -22, but very still, and I had to walk from the bus station to the campus. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…tsn5 It's very fashionable to disregard Boston, but damn, they were a bop! npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson 1978: college students locking up their bicycles to a tree on the #SyracuseUniversity campus, while others are locked up to a chain fence surrounding this little area. My 10-speed was stolen within the first weeks of freshman year, so I was probably jealous of their mobility. This isn't a great photograph, and yet it captures so much – the bikes, the cars, the clothes. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson A night shot in the eternal snow of a #Syracuse winter, 1978. A taxicab pulling up to a freshman dorm at #SyracuseUniversity at Christmas break. Always a weird lonely feeling as the campus emptied out (I was often one of the last to leave). npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…zwad and yes, I should have said "waxed," not "wax," so I'll fix that. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…zwad I was, but here in the US, I can't say I've seen any return to paper. Nearly everything for cold drinks here is single-use plastic, and has been for decades. It's disturbing when at least paper can be somewhat more sustainable. (Oddly, paper has made a comeback for hot drinks.) npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson From 1977: three high school girls attending a summer #journalism institute at #SyracuseUniversity –Mary, Kathy, Karen. That I remember their names is remarkable; I find other names in my diaries that I can't begin to put a face to. This view from the patio of the I.M. Pei-designed #NewhouseSchool no longer exists – a third Newhouse building was built there. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson Raspberries – Raspberries https://vinyldistractions.com/raspberries-raspberries/ npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…uun7 We saw that tonight and honestly it was so perfect it looked fake. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…dclf We managed to only get it once, back at the end of 2021, but it had some somewhat lasting effects that were scary. Hoping for a speedy recovery. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson Jon Bosak's images from his college days keep setting me in a nostalgic mood.[email protected] npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…rd0a Not having to deal with it on a schedule makes it vastly better, though I still feel pressure to get my sidewalk clear as quickly as possible. No room for a snowblower here, near Philly, but not much need for one either. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…dclf Again, a detail: the ubiquity of those waxed paper cups . . . now gone, gone, gone. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…rd0a Loved it in the years we lived there, though I never had to shovel it then. Captured the whole thing on an Insta360 camera, my new obsession – which gives me more incentive to get out on foot or on bike. #outdoors #WinterHike npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…qt6h Enjoy. They used some really progressive/aggressive marketing for the time, and featured flavors like "peacharoon" and "lalla rookh." If you guessed the three flavors in their "mystery brick," you won a year's supply. (And the winners all had their names and addresses published in the paper, so their friends knew who had free ice cream.) npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…ea5q This was the one that really turned me on to St. Vincent, even though my kid had introduced me to some of her stuff before. The past couple of years, I was at least neutral about them. Then this year, we somehow had a lovely gathering with both our kids and their partners, everyone was in a good space, and we had a delightful Christmas day together. npub15a7mw2lxldyt374smduwg7d87r3jma00j2dk4eqm67wr0gqyrjjst25r5c Carl Johnson @nprofile…833y I'm still in the non-eureka camp on Bowie.
