for direct messages, what about the idea of embedding an encrypted message within an encrypted message (wrap the message) with a new unique pubkey generated for each new chat. The message within the message would then have the verified author and comments.
Kieran talked about this idea on the 11th hour of Frog Talk 24 hour podcast at the 36:30 mark

Looks like the DM bot is tracking a few messages I recently sent in response to a new person on nostr who started the conversation by contacting me directly and asking me questions. Interesting that the post on the DM bot profile page does not show one of the sender's response a minute later. I am not using DMs anymore because of this.

appreciate how @npub1f4f…f7ql says that he would "like to see all three thrive, and they can learn from each other". The best things tend to result from competition, people pushing each other, your hackathons are a perfect example. Even Twitter now considering encrypted DMs was likely influenced by nostr.
@npub1myg…sn5p has recently said in his podcasts that nostr has likely achieved a critical mass of developers that are excited to build. finding ways to continue this excitement is important. Ultimately, what really resonates with me is @[email protected] point that people will flock to the place where their freedom and privacy are most respected.

Highly recommend Snowden’s book, Permanent Record, which makes a good argument against this storage of personal data by default. To me, the underlying theme of Nostr is freedom and users should have the right to choose if they want to store their data permanently. Allowing users to pay for this also promotes cost transparency.

Thank you so much for all that you have done for nostr including this article. For the principle, “only the original author may remove content they produce”, it seems difficult to get around the cost of storing data in a decentralized way. If by default, notes last for a certain amount of time, it would help guide users to find relays where they can pay for the cost of permanently storing data. Ephemeral posts also mimic real speech. Reducing the price burden on relay operators would help more relays to exist and promote more people joining nostr.
