To be fair, I could see myself accidentally falling into that trap. It's a very Western, convert thing to do. You become so excited that you want icons everywhere and carry that consumerist mindset along with you without thinking. You make the faith into a brand because our lives are brands. Depends on what you're referring to specifically from Umbrel. In my case I assembled the hardware, installed Debian, and deployed applications (primarily as containers). Umbrel Home does all that for you. UmbrelOS requires you to acquire the hardware but handles all the software for you.
UmbrelOS has an app store similar to your phone making things very simple.
What I've done requires more effort, but is helpful for me to learn skills relevant to my day job

I'm just using a simple RPI 4. I've got some basic things like Home Assistant, Pi Hole, Alby Hub, and, now, FreshRSS running on it. Got it on Tailscale so I can remotely access those resources without worrying about my public IP changing or opening ports. Nothing special, really. But I was deploying FreshRSS via Docker yesterday and was able to troubleshoot issues much more quickly than before
