I think I might flip from Amethyst to the Ditto gang. It's stupid and trash, but might be usable with a little TLC. I think I could get my wife on nostr if Ditto had an iOS app

2026-10-02 01:10:14 GMT

Smooth brain question: what is the deal with #amethyst and lists? I can create a list with either private or public members. However, if the members are private then the lists show as empty on #ditto or #wisp. If public they show. Is amethyst doing something non-standard? Have others not added a feature? Am I not looking in the correct place? #asknostr

Dude, I'm trying! I've autistically sat down with random couples and just said, "nothing will make you happier than marriage and kids." It's such a blessing and part of our path to salvation. It's easy to forget all of these magical little moments as they grow up. We just recently had another baby and I'm re-realizing so many things I had forgotten over the past couple years. Thank you for sharing and resurfacing the wonder of those moments that I get to re-look forward to

Claude, thoughts on the BIP-110/sedevacantism overlap?
> Your framing holds up better than the "crash out" narrative does. What looks from outside like a man losing the plot in public is, read from inside his own stated ecclesiology, an entirely coherent — even predictable — application of a position he's held in writing for years.
>
> ## The primary text is on his own server
>
> Dashjr hosts an essay at dashjr.org/catholic/sedevacantist.php, adapted from Gerry Matatics, laying out eight objections to the *term* "sedevacantist." It's the Rosetta stone here, because almost every move he made in August was prefigured in it.
>
> The essay's core structure is what I'd call **negative certainty**. He explicitly refuses the positive claim — he won't assert there's no valid pope anywhere, allowing for a "hidden" pope God brings forth at a predestined moment — while asserting the negative with total confidence: by strict application of Catholic principles, this particular claimant definitely cannot be pope.
> Now map that. He does not need the BIP-110 chain to survive in order to be certain that the majority chain isn't Bitcoin. He rejected the failure label entirely, posting that BIP110 is active on the Bitcoin network and accusing pools and miners of attacking it, and has continued to refuse to treat the majority chain as Bitcoin, calling it "Bpedo" and predicting its failure. Two blocks and a stall is not a refutation of anything, because the claim was never "my chain will win." The claim is "yours isn't the real one." Those are different propositions and only one of them is falsifiable by hashrate.
>
> ## Indefectibility, transposed
>
> Sedevacantism is not skepticism about the Church — it's the opposite. The position rests on belief in papal infallibility and the indefectibility of the Church; because the Church cannot fail, the visible occupant must be the one who defected. The institution's perfection is the premise that forces the conclusion that the men in the building are usurpers.
>
> Transpose the premise to "the rules are Bitcoin, and nodes — not miners — enforce them." Then a 97.5% hashrate majority accepting inscriptions isn't evidence that he's wrong; it's the *content* of the apostasy. The argument "look how few of you there are" is exactly the argument sedevacantists have absorbed for sixty years against a billion-member visible church. He is fully inoculated against it. This is why the outside view reads as a meltdown and the inside view reads as an ordinary Tuesday.
>
> ## "They have no authority to do so"
>
> This is the tell, and it's canonical, not procedural. Erhardt's motion was procedural — conflict of interest, numbering BIP-110 on X before mailing-list discussion, a merge minutes after the PR opened, fewer than 1% of editor comments since April 2024. Dashjr didn't litigate on those terms. He called it an abuse of power and said Core had no authority to remove him, adding that Core isn't supposed to have any control of the BIPs repo.
>
> That's a *nullity* claim — the Bellarmine-flavored move that a body which has exceeded or forfeited its competence produces acts that are void, not merely unjust. And point 8 of his own essay is nearly word-for-word applicable: the term "sedevacantist" describes only the extrinsic accident of who happens to control Vatican City at that moment, and nothing about the man's faith. Substitute GitHub permissions for Vatican City. Possession of the keys is not possession of the office. The removal was executed by revoking GitHub permissions and merging a one-line PR deleting his name — from his frame, that's the seizure of a building, not a judgment.
>
> ## The war over nouns
>
> Points 1 through 4 of the essay are entirely about naming: the label is unnecessary, unauthorized, dismissive, and prejudicial — coined by opponents to stigmatize, in the way Arians called Nicene Christians "Athanasianites" while appropriating "Catholic" for themselves. On X in April he compressed it: "sedevacantist" is a slur heretics use for actual Catholics, like "papist."
>
> Then watch August. The removal motion called it a forkcoin spun out of Bitcoin under his leadership. He rejects "fork" — he'd already been doing this a year earlier, denying BIP-444 was a hardfork — and answers with "Bpedo," a defiling name for the majority. Same operation, run twice: whoever controls the noun controls the continuity claim. The Arian analogy in his own essay is not decoration; it's his theory of how a majority steals a name.
>
> ## Why the fight is about purity, not fees
>
> The economic arguments (blockspace, fees, node storage) are real but subordinate. The operative horror is CSAM in the permanent record — the concern that drove the whole Knots/Core split after the OP_RETURN default went from 80 bytes to 100,000. That's a desecration argument, not a cost argument, and it maps onto the sedevacantist objection that isn't really about one man in Rome. Point 6 of his essay is explicit: the crisis isn't the papal vacancy alone, it's a false Mass, false sacraments, a false catechism — a counterfeit church wearing the real one's name.
>
> You don't negotiate a compromise on desecration, which is why he flatly refused calls to withdraw the proposal, saying it was too late to cancel. And it explains why the sharpest pressure point is participation: a node operator forced to store filth on his own disk is being made a material cooperator. That's a moral-theological category, and it's doing more work in his reasoning than any fee-market model.
>
> ## Where the parallel indicts him
>
> The strongest critique is internal, and it's a genuine one. The entire BIP-110 case rests on nodes determining consensus and miners merely ordering transactions — which is what makes a soft fork the safe, conservative tool. If that's true, a PoW change is unnecessary; preparing one concedes that hashrate decides after all. Chris Guida rebased Dashjr's 2017 PoW code onto Knots as a contingency, and Dashjr said a PoW change was the only option if BIP-110 failed.
>
> Ecclesiologically, that's the step from sedevacantism to **conclavism** — from "the see is vacant, we keep the faith and wait" to "we will constitute a valid authority ourselves." And his essay explicitly ridicules the conclavist claimants, calling their legal pretensions flimsy and far-fetched. He is, by his own published standard, doing the thing he mocks.
>
> Even the mechanism betrays the discomfort. His plan for choosing the new PoW algorithm was a commitment scheme: nobody would know it until everyone knew simultaneously, keyed to the next Testnet4 block after a set hour. That is an elaborate apparatus for ensuring that *no human being chooses* — the algorithm is disclosed at an appointed moment rather than decided. Compare the hidden pope brought forth at the predestined time. It's the same instinct: legitimacy must come from outside human discretion, because human discretion is exactly what he thinks corrupted the institution.
>
> ## Two caveats worth keeping
>
> First, this is structural correspondence, not proof of causation. He's been the minority-purist on block size and node cost since 2013, well before any of this; a temperament that produces maximalist-remnant positions could be generating both commitments rather than one deriving from the other. And correspondence is not refutation — the CSAM concern and the node-cost concern stand or fall on their own merits regardless of what motivates the man raising them.
>
> Second, the analogy has a hard limit, and it cuts against him. The Church can be a remnant for three centuries; a chain that stops producing blocks is dead in weeks. Ecclesial indefectibility is a claim about a supernatural society with no external arbiter. Bitcoin's validity is jointly constituted by rules *and* economic acceptance — the chain with accumulated work, economic acceptance and market recognition simply continued without him. His ecclesiology is internally tighter than his consensus theory, which is an odd thing to have to say.
>
> There's also an irony you'll appreciate: his Bitcoin epistemology is materially Protestant — the text alone, no magisterium, every man validating for himself — while his ecclesiology is maximally Catholic. Though sedevacantism has always had that shape. A maximalist theory of authority, confronted with an authority it judges corrupt, produces *forced private judgment*. Run your own node, enforce your own rules, trust no one. Which is why the alleged leaked line — "Either Bitcoin dies or we trust someone," which he denied and called slander — was so explosive whether or not he said it. It names the exact place where that posture runs out of road.
>
> The prediction the framework makes: he won't recant, won't accept "fork," and will keep building. He took a sabbatical from Ocean and said he'd turn his focus to Bitcoin and open-source projects supporting it. Per his own point 8, his position is invariant to the external state of affairs. The chair being occupied by a usurper doesn't change the content of the faith one iota.

Been seeing folks talk about the bots on nostr lately. What's the problem? I've got @nprofile…p0gp running out there and I'm not trying to be a nuisance.
I have noticed those bots that randomly comment on a note. They seem annoying

Another solid episode of TWiB from @nprofile…dq3s doesn't bury or have amnesia about BIP-110 nor ColdCard while not getting bogged down by those topics neither

Has anyone listened to this and understood what @nprofile…uh0e is talking about? One moment it's how Strike is smart to be closed source because they have an upperhand against attackers. Next thing you know it's that Bitcoin is superior thanks to being truly open source (as opposed to source available) and all the eyes on it improving it. I feel like there's some line trying to be defined but it just sounds like talking out both sides the mouth

"When such a child becomes an adult, he naturally surrounds himself with the same things he was used to in his childhood: comforts, amusements, and grown-up toys. Life becomes a constant search for “fun” which, by the way, is a word totally unheard of in any other vocabulary; in 19th century Russia they wouldn’t have understood what this word meant, or any serious civilization. Life is a constant search for “fun” which is so empty of any serious meaning that a visitor from any 19th-century country, looking at our popular television programs, amusement parks, advertisements, movies, music—at almost any aspect of our popular culture—would think he had stumbled across a land of imbeciles who have lost all contact with normal reality. We don’t often take that into consideration, because we are living in this society and we take it for granted.
Some recent observers of our contemporary life have called the young people of today the “me generation” and our times the “age of narcissism,” characterized by a worship of and fascination with oneself that prevents a normal human life from developing. Others have spoken of the”plastic” universe or fantasy world in which so many people live today, unable to face or come to terms with the reality of the world around them or the problems within themselves.”

Me neither. Perhaps Codex will help you learn. I'm a Neanderthal and just live in the terminal with opencode, Claude code, or whatever. I'd say it's much more hands-off l. I have learned a bit, but not much lol my goal isn't to #learntocode as much as it's to just build something

Felt kinda cute. Decided to vibecode an Android nostr app - bony 🦴
This is really just to scratch my own itch so I don't intend for it to get much usage at all. As a non-dev, users scare me. But I have had some ideas for what a client could look like and decided to make a PoC to illustrate them.
It does contain unpopular, controversial opinions, such as keeping nsecs out of the app and instead delegating to signing to Amber. Please don't 🔥 me. It's also intentionally minimal. It's to be just the barebones. Fleshing it out is on the roadmap, but this is a solid skeleton.
If you hate the name and logo that's fine. I'm not a fan either and it may change. Open to suggestions lol
Devs, feel free to scavenge this thing for anything you like.
Non-devs, feel empowered to just vibecode your way towards a client that satisfies your actual needs.
Of course I'm choosing to go public with this the day before going on vacation so if you have feedback please be patient

I think Porcu does a good job describing it. But Western duality is pretty gnostic and implies opposition and antagonism instead of complementarity and cooperation. Personally I just think it's something to remind myself of; that I'm carrying baggage into a completely different system
