One aspect is profoundly unclear to me about American copyright. Yes, a+b+c=copyright. That's how it works worldwide. So what you someone need to 'register' copyright? It's automatic. That's the whole point, no? And one of the discriminators v. patents.

Now, to me, personally that is obvious. Back in the day (2000s) when I needed to troll our local version of RIAA I had to release some stuff to the public domain. That was impossible, legally. So I made a program that would create the art for me to work around that.
