Do be aware that taking those (very reasonable) kinds of measures may void some warranty or other.
My understanding is that modern cars are computerized up the wazoo, and of course the companies want to cover their own asses as much as possible while gathering all the data they can to sell out the back door.
So as with opening your own laptop or hacking into a sweeping robot so it doesn’t keep sending data back to its company, if you don’t let the thing do what the company wants it to do — i.e. data mine — it may void the warranty of the thing.

People also don’t seem to realize when you call someone through your car, the entire car becomes a resonating chamber and it’s REALLY easy for casual passersby to hear at least the other side of the call.

Seems to be some disagreement on when to set the clocks back this year.
I’ve seen plenty of stuff posted here about how it’s today. But all indications I’ve seen for Canada is that it’s November 2nd.
Also, why is setting clocks forward or back still happening in 2025?

Sincerely wondering what the endgame was here: Overhype what something can do, fire a bunch of people on that assurance, and… hope it all works out for realsies? 🤔

Reminds me of the Family Guy bit where Peter is in the elevator with one man and Peter farts, looks around, points at the guy and says, "YOU did it," and looks very pleased with himself for handling the situation so well.

Curious how many people will fall for this one, as well.
I mean listen, we’re all at risk of getting taken for a scam. But when the guy has this long a history of failure after failure, you’d think people would learn to just steer clear of anything he’s hocking now. Yet again and again, clearly enough people do it to make it worth his while.
Pump it, cash out, crash the project, move onto the next thing without any regret of fleecing the suckers again. Rinse and repeat.

I just finished A Sorceress Comes To Call by T. Kingfisher. Really good, as always. I want to be able to write like her when I grow up. 🙂
I’ve read a few shorter things by Adrian Tchaikovsky recently, as well. Usually good stuff. Saturation Point, And Put Away Childish Things, and Elder Race are among my favourites of his. Elder Race is a great blend I haven’t encountered before of fantasy and SF.
Watching this thread for other suggestions.

Another thing that’ll be a whole other level is what I guess amount to French colloquialisms.
The LCBO here in Ontario publishes a magazine they call FOOD & DRINK. The French version of it is called À BON VERRE, BONNE TABLE.
So… Of Good Glass, Good Table?
Why not just the direct translation of Food and Drink?
(Also, why a comma and no ampersand?)
Miles to go for me yet, I’m afraid.

That’s the bulk of those lessons, just piecing together the pre-filled tiles they supply. But there are also open blanks that you freely type into. Bit harrowing having to Freeform spell the French version of “Spain”,
having only seen it a couple of times recently and then probably not since at least grade school decades ago. 😬

Curious if it’s an Anglophone linguistic creation: a placeholder for missing letters that other languages don’t (need to) use.
Anyone?

I’m considering giving another go to carrying a small, physical notebook with me again, for a place to jot down story ideas and general brain noodling on the go.
But…
Anyone who carries such a thing: Where do you keep it when you’re away from home?
I have a courier bag I bring to work, but rarely use it otherwise.
In winter I wear coats — jackets in spring and autumn — but not all of them have practical pockets for even a little notebook and pen or pencil (and that’s another thing: Do you use a pencil to avoid exploding pens? Because they get stabby and can lead to holes in clothes.)
In summer I wear shorts and t-shirts. But even with cargo shorts, with my phone in one big pocket and wallet in the other, I don’t want either jabbed by pen or pencil.
I’d genuinely like to give an analog notebook another go to see if if varies what I capture from using my phone as a notebook, but in many ways it seems impractical to carry everywhere, which is of course the whole idea.
Suggestions?

Torn with this upcoming provincial election: The Liberals are the only ones with any hope of beating Ford and his Conservatives.
BUT…
I know next to nothing about Bonnie Crombie, the new leader of the provincial Liberals, and she really, really didn’t shine in the leaders’ debate last night.
Whereas the respective heads of the NDP and Green Parties (both parties I’ve voted for in the past and would again) DID stand out.
BUT…
Because those two are so far back in the pack, right now a vote for either of them is a vote not actively working against the Conservatives winning.
AND…
I know that part of the point of voting is intended to be for whatever rep or party to get their earned votes from people with aligned perspectives.
BUT…
Our province (and my wife’s sector of work, and my own line of work) is getting trashed by Ford and his lot, and we could really use someone else at the helm for a while to hopefully undo some of the damage he’s done, so a vote for the party most likely to do that (Liberals) would help maybe possibly bring that into effect.
BUT…
… whether voting for municipal, provincial or federal elections, I’m getting really, really tired of voting strategically.
I want to vote for my preferred party (or person) and feel good about doing so instead of feeling bad about not helping actually change who’s calling the shots.
Thoughts?

Be nice to see Freeland make a go at becoming PM. I lean left of the Liberals, but she has a much better chance than others of beating Poilievre, which can’t be overstated.
I mean, listen, I’d trust my dog as PM before I’d trust Poilievre, and Radar has been known to go one way and look in another and as a result walk into furniture.

Been looking forward to trying Linux for the first time and recently just got a new laptop. I was all ready to finally try to install it but then remembered I don’t have the backup Windows OS anywhere (bought the laptop second hand) and I have brutal luck with tech, so something somewhere along the way will more likely than not mess up, and I don’t want to do that with a new(er) computer.
My OLD laptop, though…

For what it’s worth, I’m in a similar boat as you — long-suffering Windows user looking to get the hell away from it and not having taken the steps yet to do so but finally in a practical position to at least dip a toe into Linux — and the distro that keeps being recommended to me is Cinnamon Mint, as it’s stable (no rolling up sleeves and getting into the coding for me, thanks) and Windows-like enough that it’s familiar enough to make a smooth transition.
Having said that, my understanding is that which distro you’re most comfortable with is inherently informed by various factors including how much mucking about you’re comfortable doing in order to tweak it as needed to get everything operating to jibe. Personally, I definitely need something that works as well as possible right out of the proverbial box.
