I love it!
Ours have just a hint of iridescence. The "double crest" is rarely seen and unremarkable.
They're still fun to watch!
This chap was part of a gaggle of 5-6 Double-Crested #Cormorants who used our #kayak shadow for fishing one day in #Florida back in 2020.

Specifically I remember the punitive "we'll only give you a 30 day's supply" of a med the patient has been on for 20 years (for say diabetes) in the ED or VA, or sometimes in the same group of docs when one of them is on vacation.

This was the patient instruction card I used for the last five years of my practice. Note the exhortation at the bottom "Bring All Your #Medications..."
I could count on one hand the number of times my patients followed that advice. In #primarycare it is impossible to know what the patient is ACTUALLY taking unless they bring the whole bag of bottles in with them... "#Rx meds from five different #doctors in three different systems, plus over-the-counter #drugs, plus mostly snake-oil #supplements that probably aren't causing harm directly but interfere with at least one of the legit meds I have the patient on..."

Two big lies propagated by the #NRA and #GOP ...
1) Citizens with #Guns can stand up to the #Government with bigger guns. Yeah right!
2) The #NRA is all about the #SecondAmendment, when it is in fact just a #Lobby / PR Firm for gun manufacturers. (Modeled after the #Tobacco lobby BTW.)
Those who wrote the #US #Constitution did not want there to be an standing army in peacetime, and therefor they added support for "A well regulated #Militia..." that could be called upon if we were attacked.
Note that they specified: a) "well regulated", b) "a militia" SINGULAR, & c) at that time a "militia" meant able-bodied men keeping their single-shot muskets in their home (which was also what they used to hunt deer).
It is right there in the plain text of the amendment, but the #GunLobby has us so hypnotized we no longer see it. 😠

a) Have you been in an #ER lately, had to wait a long time for care? You ain't seen nothin' yet!
b) There's no "free lunch" in the ER, someone is paying for that extra care. It's probably going to show up in YOUR #insurance premiums.
c) More than a third of Americans have some sort of #chronic_disease (#diabetes, #high_blood_pressure) that requires ongoing medication. ER does nothing for these.
d) Don't even get me started about mental health care. If you aren't about to kill yourself or someone else... no love there either.
No cuts to #Medicaid or #Medicare!

I have to share my #anting story...
We were #birding at the #Audubon #CorkscrewSwamp in S #Florida. Most of the hike is on a boardwalk so you are up high looking down at #birds on the ground when not over water. We see a #CommonYellowthroat #Warbler on the ground attacking a group of ants. It was odd because he didn't look like he was eating them, just tossing them around like he was mad at them.
Many years later I was reading "The Birder's Handbook" (which has an interesting format, one bird description on each right-hand page, and a more general bird-related essay on the left). I got to the essay on "Anting" and remembered that little bird and the ants! Not mad, not hungry... He just needed a little bug repellent!
Note that elsewhere on a sister site there is an article that seems to contradict all of the above... ?!

I think the alt text is trying to say "flamingo". This is incorrect. It is an #Ibis based on the curved bill shape. There is such a thing as a Scarlet Ibis, so perhaps that is what it is?

#Insurance is about pooling resources and sharing risk. A simple thought experiment will help illustrate why “health insurance” is a misnomer.
Consider a group of one thousand homeowners who are worried about house fires. They band together and create an insurance pool for protection against such losses. If homes are worth $100,000 and there is one fire per year, annually they would have to chip in $100 each. Fortunately the risky event is rare, so the cost of insurance is low.
Compare this with #HealthInsurance (which is actually insurance against illness). We have the same thousand people, of which half (500) consume an average of $10,000 of healthcare services each year ($5M).
#Illness is NOT a rare event and the annual premium jumps to $5,000 per person! Many of the younger, healthier people ask why they should be paying for somebody else’s infirmity? They withdraw from the pool and premiums skyrocket. Eventually the pool collapses and those who actually need care loose their coverage. In some cases financial ruin ensues. The U.S. is the only major society in the world where Medical Bankruptcy is not only possible, but common!
👉 The key difference is that almost everyone will utilize healthcare services at some point in their lives. The insurance model breaks down under these circumstances. We are no longer sharing #risk but rather #sharing #cost.👈
This is expected—a feature, not a bug. It stems from the #industrialization of #medicine in a #capitalist environment. #Capitalism seeks profit as its major goal, regardless of other outcomes. "Outcomes" that include life, death, and disability! Once the practice of medicine becomes a business, my Father [a radiologist] once opined, "We can #lie, #cheat, and #steal with the rest of them."
