Bluesky is down today. "Hah", I think, "since I use a self-hosted PDS for posting and Blacksky for viewing posts, I can go on using the service just fine".
Blacksky can't show me my own posts. I can make them and they show up on my PDS, but my profile shows none more recent than last night.
I wonder if Blacksky is coincidentally having server problems, or if Blacksky has a still-undisclosed dependency on Bluesky services. (It *does* have disclosed use of Bluesky moderation; maybe that's it.)

The problem I've got right now is I can write software at any level of the stack— programming languages, webtech, GUI, graphics programming, I can actually make my own CPUs, not good ones but I can make them— *except* operating systems, that is the one thing I haven't had the chance to learn. So there's this guy who made a tool where someone punches in their bluesky or mastodon credentials to his website, and it auto-crawls their feeds and produces an LLM summary of everyone it finds posting there. He was asked what people should do if we don't want to be mulched as content for his summary feeds. He said we should block him. I replied, I can do that, but that only stops *you* from running the tool on me, how do I prevent *your other users* from running your tool on me? He blocked me.

The project's own self-description says "chardet 7.0 is a ground-up, MIT-licensed rewrite of chardet" which sounds like something a LLM would write but doesn't tell me much (And the PR is big enough to break Github's PR display feature so it's a little hard to figure out what the project looked like before the +14526 -546715 patch.)

My understanding is that Bitwarden and KeePassXC, the two open source password managers, are *both* using random code generators at this point, which is terrifying as those are the exact tools where a small error could have the largest negative impact, and also tools that once you've committed to using it you can't quickly back out if they enter a code quality decline

@nprofile…3q9y @nprofile…j05z Incidentally, I'd argue that WebGPU is a better "long term oriented" target than Vulkan, because it's the common subset of Vulkan/Metal/DX12— unless someone specifically wants to support Android, they're unincentivized to bother making sure they can support the entire Vulkan feature set, but there is strong market logic for supporting at least the entirety of WebGPU, and strong disincentive for Apple or anyone like them to allow WebGPU to break in future.

So for a long time I found LISP elegant but I found the syntax infuriating. Then I made my own LISP variant with semi-significant whitespace and helper syntax— each line (up to whitespace or comma) is wrapped in an implicit (), a : wraps a () to the end of the line, a {} wraps its interior in (lambda), a [] wraps its contents in (list ), "x.y" becomes "get x y". Suddenly, I found it usable!
I wonder if I could just make an editor that applies these rules implicitly, and then I could use GUIX.

LLM advocates and their enablers will hide the fact that they are posting stolen code— they brag about this, their most widely-effective argument for LLM code being allowed in OSS is "if you tell us we can't, we'll do it and not tell you"— and attempts to track which open source projects use stolen code will be harassed off the Internet. I do not want to be part of this open source community, so the only options I seem to have are to wall myself off from it, or stop doing open source altogether.

A theory I have seen and find compelling is that they are trying to increase the cost of using an external ad network. If you cut a deal with Unity to use their ad network instead of your homegrown ad network, they'll give you a discount and cancel out the increased costs.

To be clear, "it's there but you can turn it off" is not enough for me, I already stopped using SwiftKey, Microsoft Windows, Miro, etc on the basis of "we put AI in the software with an option to turn it off". If an org ships a "generative AI" product I want to boycott them and I want everyone to boycott them until they go out of business. I don't want a virus on my hard drive even if it's turned off. But Mozilla's ever-shifting checkbox scavenger hunt has never *resembled* "can easily turn off"

Trying to contact company A about making an order. They do not answer their phones. They will not respond to voice mail messages. They do not respond to email.
Trying to contact company B about a in-warranty return. The website customer service "contact us" form, when submitted, the submit button turns light gray and nothing happens. This occurs in both Firefox on Linux and Chrome on Windows. No posted phone number.

There is something called the "Crunchyroll Store". I don't know what they sell, I assume anime. On Oct 22 they sent me an email titled "Oops! Thought you'd ghosted us!" and, starting at this point, started emailing me heavily, a couple times a week, leading up to Nov 19 since when they've been emailing me every day, sometimes multiple times a day, with spam.
On Dec 3, I unsubscribed. The daily emails continued coming. I filed a support request and was told unsubscribe can take "up to week"
