I struggle to see how Putnam could be significantly improved without becoming one-way, it's just not very wide. But there's lots of stuff throughout the neighborhood that could combine to make enough alternative routes to be good enough

Based on Wu's BSKY activity, I think we can officially mark her down as no longer progressive and just a generic status-quo-ist Democrat. It's been a bit over a year of uncertainty if she was just worried about Kraft, but it turns out daddy Kraft won the election before it even started

The difficulty is that MassDOT is a highway builder and the neighborhood knows there is a traffic problem, so it's easy for the state to say "we are going to increase capacity to make things flow better" and normal people aren't thinking about induced demand or bottlenecks, which the state is ignoring with their designs.

2026-01-07 16:12:41 GMT

there's no plan to expand BU Bridge capacity, so the right thing to do is reduce capacity leading to it so that people choose other routes (including just taking the T). The only increase in capacity that should be discussed is bus priority (which may include queue jumps or bus lanes) to get the bus through the bridge faster.

my hot-take on motorsport (of which I'm not a fan so like, this means nothing) is that elite karting would be the most fun to watch. You could actually see the drivers moving their bodies from outside the cars and interacting with each other. But also, it becomes an approachable sport that you can go do yourself on the weekend, and you could easily make indoor courses that are fairly accessible and way less wasteful than golfing.

2025-12-22 17:38:11 GMT

the more I have to listen to golfers, the less sympathy I have for them. the most selfish people playing the most* wasteful sport arrogantly claiming its the most important thing within a city
*most is probably motorsports, but I think in most cases everyone knows that should be out in the middle of nowhere and not in a dense city

In the meeting comments someone starts with the claim that their nephew was hit by a car and has a TBI/paralysis. Then concludes that bikes are the safety concern and maybe we shouldn't have a bike lane.

2025-12-02 23:50:03 GMT

Get yourself a DOT director that responds to golfers complaining about losing parking that the new bike lane means that they can bike there instead

yeah, I also think we should generally ban street parking (but practically do that by redesigning streets without it, not just ban it over night) because it causes all sorts safety and logistic problems, and hides the external costs of parking while creating the societal expectation that there is abundant free parking directly in front of everything

We can make the city more desirable to live in while also making the cost of living lower. This works by increasing density of housing. What happens is your land value increases while the building/unit value decreases. If there is a high enough delta between units on your parcel vs units allowed on your parcel, your precious "house value" will continue to go up. But if you keep your zoning restricted while other areas densify, you might lose value.

2025-11-03 16:56:31 GMT

- reply

people (this is a US-wide thing) really don't realize that property/home value is actually 2 distinct things and the value of one can change without being related to the other. Like, when people are doing specific things I think they get it, but never in the abstract in policy discussions.
