Faraday 2013–2026 🐈
I am so sad to say my little faceplanter has planted his last face. Faraday was a beautiful and highly extroverted cat who loved food, cuddling people & RuPhos (whether they invited it or not), invading almost all my WFH meetings, and above all else, chaos. He will be missed.

I was not lucky enough to see Ada Yonath speak, as the one time I should have she was unfortunately ill (several years ago). The impact she has had was immense!

The latest is particularly special and was -not- remotely on my mind...

I have just learned about acridine red not being an acridine, because (to paraphrase) "early biological stains were often named descriptively based on their color output or similarity in usage to other dyes". FML, guys #chemchat

First time I've seen substitution into DCM actually wanted! Only 3 equiv CH2Cl2 will mitigate problems, as amines + CH2Cl2 make thermally unstable products: a pain & explosion risk. CH2O byproduct not great for further low-level imps. But very innovative! #chemsky

By far the most impressive Lepidoptera chrysalis I've ever seen! Not only with devil horns at the bottom, it's bedecked with gold spikes. It's also about 20 mm long. Note what I think is an aphid moult at the top! Seek suggested a comma, which saree common here. Not certain so one for #iNaturalist
