Nobody warns you. That's the sick part.
Nobody sits you down and says, hey, if you spend one weekend actually reading about money, you will lose the ability to enjoy anything for the rest of your life.
Your brother-in-law just mentions it at a barbecue. That's how it starts. Some guy holding a hot dog says "you should look into Bitcoin" and you laugh at him.
You laugh AT him.
You make the tulip joke. You feel superior for eleven more days.
Then it's 2:47 in the morning and you're on your fourth Saylor podcast and your wife thinks you're having an affair.
And in a way, you are.
You're cheating on your entire worldview.
ou came in to debunk it. That's the trap. Everyone comes in to debunk it. You wanted to find the flaw, dunk on your brother-in-law, and go back to your Vanguard target date fund like a respectable adult.
Instead you found out what happened in 1971 and now you can't make eye contact with your 401k.
Because here's what actually happens.
Bitcoin is cool and all, but you REALLY learn about the dollar. Bitcoin is fine, Bitcoin is twenty-one million and a schedule, you understand it in an afternoon. The dollar takes months, because every time you think you've hit the bottom of that thing there's a trapdoor.
The Fed just... prints it? And they gave how much to the banks in 2008? And the banks did WHAT with it?
And the guy who ran that got a MEDAL? You're up at 4am reading about the Cantillon effect like it's your kid's toxicology report.
Then comes the phase where you're insufferable.
Everyone goes through it, nobody admits it. You ruin Thanksgiving. You genuinely ruin it. Your aunt says turkey prices are crazy this year and you see your opening like a lion seeing a wounded gazelle.
Forty-five minutes later you're drawing the M2 money supply on a napkin and your mother is crying and your uncle is saying "it's not backed by anything" for the ninth time while his pension is backed by the promises of a government that's thirty-seven trillion in debt.
He's worried about YOUR risk profile.
He has unit bias so bad he'd rather own a whole Shiba Inu coin than a fraction of the hardest asset ever created, because his brain, poisoned by seventy years of fiat, thinks "whole thing cheap" beats "piece of thing good."
And the prices. God, the prices. You can't turn it off.
You're in the grocery store repricing eggs in sats. The eggs are getting cheaper in sats. Everything is getting cheaper in sats except your will to explain that to anyone.
You look at a house and you don't see a house, you see the number of Bitcoin it costs, and that number falling forever, and you realize the housing crisis is a measuring stick crisis, and you say this out loud at a dinner party, once, and now you're not invited to dinner parties.
Then the anger burns off and something worse arrives.
Clarity. You realize nobody is coming to fix this.
The people in charge KNOW. That's the part that breaks you. They're not stupid, they're incentivized.
The debt can't be paid, only inflated, and every serious person in a suit on television knows it, and their plan is to be dead before the invoice arrives.
So you buy. Coinbase, first time, hands shaking like you're doing something illegal, and the fee annoys you, and that annoyance is the last normal financial emotion you will ever feel.
You set up the DCA. You learn what a hardware wallet is. You write twelve words on steel like a doomsday prepper, because that's what you are now, except your bunker is math.
And then the loneliness. Nobody tells you about the loneliness. You've seen it. You can't unsee it.
And you're surrounded by people you love who are working forty years to fill a bathtub with the drain open, and when you point at the drain they get mad at YOU.
So you stop pointing. You just stack quietly, in the dark, waiting for the day one of them comes to you, at a barbecue, holding a hot dog, and says the words.
"Hey... you were into Bitcoin, right?"
And you smile. Because it's their turn in the barrel.
Welcome. Nobody warned me either.

This is central banking in a nutshell:
A group of rich guys go to the king and say: "Hey, you need money for your war. We'll give you all the money you want."
The king says: "Great, where's the money?"
They say: "We're going to make it up. We'll write numbers in a book and that's your money now."
The king says: "What do I owe you?"
They say: "You pay us back with interest."
The king says: "Where do I get that money?"
They say: "You tax your citizens."
The king says: "What if I can't pay it all back?"
They say: "That's fine. We'll lend you more. Same deal."
The king says: "And what do you do with the IOUs I gave you?"
They say: "We use them to prove we have money, so we can lend even more money to other people and charge them interest too."
The king says: "So you made up money, lent it to me, I tax my people to pay you back, and then you use my debt to make up even more money and lend it to everyone else?"
They say: "Yes."
The king says: "What did it cost you?"
They say: "Nothing."
That's literally how the Bank of England started in 1694. The Bank was formed to finance King William's war with France. The king gave the Bank a charter, granting it a monopoly on money.
The king could have as much money as he wanted. The bankers could always earn interest. Taxpayers covered the bill.
Now replace "king" with "United States Government" and you have the Federal Reserve in 1913. Same story, different country.
It doesn't end there.
185 central banks exist in the world today.
Across the globe, the governments get as much money as they want, the bankers load their pockets with interest, and the taxpayers pay for it all.
Oh, and if you don't pay your taxes, they'll fine you, penalize you, or throw you in jail.
The ONLY way out of this is to STOP USING THEIR MONEY.
As long as you're using the money that central banks control, the central banks will have control.
You have to stop giving them energy.
Use a different form of money that they can't control.
This is why Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin.

I try to put myself in the shoes of the whales, and if I had more Bitcoin than I knew what to do with, would I want to do the same?
I wrestle with this question because in my mind I've always thought of whales as smarter than me when it comes to an understanding of Bitcoin. Do they know something I don't know? Or am I just too small to understand

2025-07-07 13:53:01 GMT

Is the reason that Bitcoin whales are selling because they know they finally have just as large of buyers on the other end of the trade? (Institutions, nation states etc)
And large scale selling won't drop the price so they feel this is their time to unload?

One of the cope tendencies I've seen among bitcoin bears is that they said "the state" wouldn't allow it, would shut it down, as a justification for not being bullish years ago. Then as the network grew massively, and a subset of politicians liked it either because they have anti-big-state views themselves or because money speaks, those bears shift to "well now it lost its way, now it is captured" as a way to continue to be bearish on the idea even as the price soars and the network strengthens. Part of being bullish years ago was understanding this type of game theory.

The way I like to value Bitcoin is more like an adoption story rather than USD price.
People say, what do you think the price should be? And I say, I don't look at the price or predict it. What I do is start with the assumption that it is going to become the dominant form of money and then I look at where we are in the adoption curve.
And not just how many people have adopted it, but who is adopting it.
And I think the "who" that is adopting it is in the middle of changing right now.
We see bitcoin Treasury companies and governments buying, so I think these types of holders of Bitcoin are going to change the past volatility patterns that we've seen.
When there is a sell-off and the algorithms try to get people to sell their Bitcoin, almost no bitcoin Treasury company is going to be spooked into selling its Bitcoin, nor will any nation.
So I think we will see meaningful volatility pattern changes on the downside.
This is the way to think of Bitcoins value from the standpoint of the network itself. Stop looking at the dollar price.
The network effect of looking at how many participants and who are those participants, how much buying power do those participants wield? ..that will move the adoption overall very differently than your grandma buying $5 worth.
If you look at just these metrics from a fundamental standpoint, it's insane how much the bitcoin network has performed recently.
So the question is ...
How do you model that?
How do you put that data onto a chart?
Now, instead of "future cash flows" for evaluation, we have "future adoption" as a data metric.

Post Bretton Woods, the US has become and empire and essentially created financial colonies in most of the third world by forcing them to use US dollars these counties subordinate their economies to support the value of the US dollar allowing America to borrow and spend recklessly without immediate consequence.
By using USDs, these foreigns are routed through the US banking system and subject to US foreign policy even policies that are not supported by the United Nations.
The US can essentially extend its jurisdiction over much of the global economy and cut off trade for those countries who protest.
But this power comes with a cost.
By exporting jobs, wages deflate across the US and wealth inequality worsens. Political polarization quickly follows along with the destabilization and corruption of institutions. The system requires ever increasing flows of dollars to satisfy demand and the FED will be forced to respond with a river of fresh greenbacks. Inflation that the US has now exported is a latent risk in the form of treasuries held by foreigners.

March 2020, the FED printing trillions which caused inflation which they then swore to fight this they then began hiking interest rates on March 16th 2022 and began QT later in the summer.
QE has stopped new money from flowing out into the system which had constant demand for them. Worse yet, they were hiking completely blind.
Although the FED are very far behind the curve, other countries are even further behind.
This is the basis for the Dollar Milkshake theory.
The US has built-in demand for its currency. No other Fiat currency has this. This comes from foreign central banks that need dollars for foreign exchange reserves and import/export firms that need dollars to settle trade invoices and sovereign wealth funds that need a secure/liquid place to invest their capital.
As the dollar rises, a vicous feedback loop emerges where countries need to dump increasing amounts of their own currency to get their hands on USDs.
This rise in DXY increases borrowing costs for countries and businesses with debts denominated in dollars which puts severe strains on economic growth and forces more capital to flee to the US to seek safe harbor.
Worse yet, the more the FED raises rates the more strain it exerts onto the system. By hiking domestic rates above foreign rates (Japan is at 1% and Euro zone at 4%) the FED is incetivizing what's called Carry Trades.
Since there is a spread between the Yen and Dollar in terms of interest rates, it is profitable for traders to borrow in Yen and then buy Dollars which can earn interest.
DXY rises and the Yen falls in a vicous feedback loop thus capital flows out of Japan and into the US.
America sucks up the Dollar milkshake draining global liquidity. This has seriously dangerous implications for the global financial system.
Everytime the FED stops printing money and hikes rates too quickly, it causes havoc on global trade as seen in the currency markets because not enough dollars are flowing out to satisfy demand from the carry traders.
This was evident in the currency crisis of the Yen, Euro, and the Pound in September 2022.
The FED must then restart QE and open up dollar swap lines unless it wants to sour a collapse on a global scale.
Remember, all these countries need to buy, borrow, and trade on a currency that they cannot print.
The largest factor by all is their desperate need for dollars. The FED knowingly or not is basically in charge of the global financial system.
When they raise rates, they trigger a margin call on the entire world. They need to bail them out by then supplying fresh dollars to stabilize their currency.
In other words, the FED has to run the loosest and most accommodating monetary policy worldwide in the long run. They must keep rates as low as possible and print as much as possible in order to keep the global financial system running.
If they don't do that, sovereigns begin to blow up. If this happens they will not only need to bail out the US but virtually every global central bank.
The money needed for this would be easily in the dozens of trillions.

Triffin's Dilemma:
The reserve currency country must run persistent current account deficits in order to provide the rest of the world with reserves denominated in its currency.
In doing so, it becomes more indebted to foreigners until the risk-free assets ceases to be risk-free. The elites understand this issue perfectly.
But the reason the system did well for so long is because US debt levels were manageable and structural advantages the US had that helped it immensely including a deep and liquid bonded stock market, large population, and a large percent of global trade.
But they also understand that Triffin's Dilemma is the final nail in the coffin and every past reserve asset country has only lasted 80 years on average.
The USA needs to decide whether to not print dollars and import goods which halt global trade causing defaults for third world countries with debt denominated in dollars or..
It has to decide to run current account deficits to keep the global economy running at the expense of burying itself in debt and de-industrializing the heartland resulting in the US eventually having to print their way out.
Which will kill the US dollar as a global reserve currency.

In 2015, foreigns stopped buying US treasuries essentially they decided to stop funding growing US deficits. Which means the US is on the hook for any new government spending that occurs since there is no, or very little, lending coming into the US from global central banks.
We then had to source it ourselves.
This began with structural changes money market funds and bank capital requirements. (Basil 3 and Dodd Frank)
This forced institutions to buy treasuries for their balance sheets
These money market funds doubled from 0.8trillion to 2.1trillion from 2014-2016 and then 4.9trillion by 2020.
These MMFs almost exclusively bought short term maturity t-bills, essentially becoming a large new lender for the government.
However these institutions only have so much money so it could only buy a limited amount of time.
Beginning on March 2020, the government began massive fiscal expenditures to deal with the fallout of Covid.
This time was different, since global banks weren't lending to the US, our government had to print the difference.
The FED had to step in and back stop the Treasury US fiscal deficits which hadn't mattered in 40 years, now began to matter.
The FED directly purchasing treasuries is harmful to the system and is directly inflationary to the United States instead of allowing other global central banks to print and inflate their own currencies.
That's not how a global reserve currency is supposed to work.
That is like a chef eating her own cooking more than her customers do.
In ONE YEAR the FED went from owning half as much treasuries as foreign central banks to more than ALL OF THEM COMBINED.
In 2008 when the FED did this the money had stayed in the banking system due to the nature of QE, however this time it was the government and entire US economy that needed to be bailed out, so that is where the dollars had to flow. This led to a massive influx of dollars into the real economy and thus the recipe for a large surge in inflation in the coming years.
With fiscal deficits at 2.8trillion in 2021 and foreign central banks financing almost none of it, that means there is 2.4trillion in US treasuries that need to be bought.
There is no surprise that foreign leaders have seen those writing on the wall and have begun to pull support for US treasuries.
Would you want your hard earned taxes being invested in a reserve asset that's losing 7.5% of its value annually and is projected to lose even more as the debt payments come due?

For geopolitical rivals of the US, they view this system as an extremely potent force to help maintain the US status as an economic superpower.
Look at the world or the US from the position of China. What makes America a superpower? Military? Partly. Nuclear weapons? Not so much. What really gives us leverage is the position of the dollar as the base currency.
We escaped the last GFC largely by printing money.
Other countries cannot get away with that without causing massive inflation.
Viewing the US Treasury printing money from Beijing, this has the effect of exporting inflation to other countries. We borrow money by selling treasuries to finance our wars and then pay them off in essence by printing dollars.
The dollar is a uniquely powerful lever one that is rarely thought of in terms of national security. But nothing is more important.
If we lose it, we will have lost our position as the last superpower.
These rivals, particularly Russia, China, and Iran have been hit the hardest by US sanctions and economic warfare.
They are not alone, even allies like UK, India, Germany, and others are tired of being exploited by this system.
The exorbitant privilege created by Triffin's Dilemma means these countries have to work hard to produce goods and services that are swapped for the US dollar which we can print out of thin air.
They then have to exchange these dollars for US assets instead of investing in their own countries.
We get cheap goods and cheap debt, fueling our overly consumerist culture, while they get more inflation and less investment in their own economies.
The ill effects of this dilemma are building up and corroding the very system which provides the US with so much economic dominance.

2025-04-29 18:24:24 GMT

Remember, foreigners have to recycle their trade surpluses back in USDs in order to settle global trade and hold enough currency reserves in their central banks.
(Historically they have done so by buying US Treasuries since these are considered risk-free assets)
This is an easy way to earn yield on a massive amount of USDs that have built up on their balance sheet.
After the 2008 GFC the US government borrowed a lot to fund TARP and increase unemployment benefits. The majority of this borrowing was backed up from foreign creditors purchasing the US Treasuries who bought around 70% of the new debt issued, the Fed bought most of the rest.
However, since 2015 foreign banks have eased up on their purchasing of US treasuries and foreign purchases flatlined and no net increases for several years.
This is surprising given that the trade deficits were still increasing, so the US was still sending out more dollars into the world than it received.
US debt ballooned to $9trillion but foreigners only bought 14% of that from 2018-2022.
This was a drastic decrease from their buying in previous years.
America has taken on too much debt and at the time rates were too low, so foreign banks did not buy their usual amount of US treasuries.
But they still had to recycle their dollar surpluses effectively, so they bought assets denominated in USD. (Equities, real estate etc)
So they have started massively investing in US assets.
US owns 29trillion in foreign assets while foreigns own 42trillion in US assets. This represents a whopping 60% negative NIIP and has fueled the creation of a massive stock and real estate bubble domestically.
All this has boosted growth in the past but also creates systemic risk.
With foreigners owning so much in US assets it means a large proportion of wealth creation is being siphoned off overseas and doesn't recycle back into America communities.
This contributes to wealth inequality all over the globe and creates the potential for a massive rug pull on the American economy.
If foreigners began to lose confidence in the US economy they could essentially begin a run on the dollar.
This would begin by massive selling of US treasuries but could spread to stocks and real estate causing widespread deflation much worse than 2008.
The FED would then be faced with the grim choice of either letting $42trillion of US assets be fire sold into a new great depression or ramp up QE to bride the assets on sale.
Untold trillions of dollars would need to be printed. This would make the current QE program look like a joke in comparison.
Most foreigners don't want to invest in US assets especially treasuries, but are forced to die to the structure of the system and the fact there is no good alternative for now...

In short, this means if the U.S. wants to keep the global monetary system humming it needs to keep a trade imbalance, and grow that imbalance over time if the world continues to grow faster than we do. Obviously as you can see above, this trend has been accelerating as the third world (especially Asia) joined the eurodollar market in earnest in the 1990s and 2000s.

Therefore, the offshoring of the U.S. industrial base (as much manufacturing output loss as a major war!) was not only done to juice US corporate profits, but it was done as a byproduct of the necessity to export dollars to the world. Fat C-suite bonuses are just a cherry on top.

Many attribute the blowout of the trade deficit to currency manipulation by third world countries, unfair trade practices, or exploitative labor practices- all of which are true, and definitely contribute to the deficit, but they don’t explain the whole picture. In fact, as the global monetary system becomes more and more unmoored to the fundamentals of hard money, it increasingly relies on liquidity, which in essence means dollar liquidity because the global economy runs on dollars.

All of this creates persistent and ubiquitous DEMAND for USDs. It turns out that demand must be met with SUPPLY, or the global monetary system begins grinding to a halt- this is what Belgian economist Robert Triffin warned Congress about 65 years ago. The U.S. has the fateful choice of whether or not to meet demand, and if they do not, global deflation soon follows.

Since the almighty greenback is the Global Reserve Currency (GRC), it is widely for a variety of purposes, including:
Settlement of Trade
Invoices, bills, etc are settled in dollars
Foreign exchange reserves for central banks
(think BoJ using USTs to prop up the dying Yen)
Lending for International Debt and Loans
IMF, World Bank, and others lend to sovereigns in dollars
Foreign currency exchange (Forex)
Most currency pairs are quoted against the dollar (e.g., EUR/USD, USD/JPY), making it central to global FX markets.
Outright Dollarization
Some countries use the U.S. dollar as their official currency (e.g., Ecuador, El Salvador) or alongside their local currency.
Remittances & Cross-Border Transfers
Dollars are widely used for sending money across borders, particularly in developing countries.
Safe-Haven Asset Feature
During crises, investors buy dollars for safety, causing global capital flows into U.S. assets like Treasuries.
Eurodollar Market (perhaps most important of all!)
U.S. dollars dominate SWIFT transactions, international bank reserves, and offshore banking systems- the offshore system is called the Eurodollar market.
USDs are lent into existence by foreign banks and used to finance global commerce. (Banks in Pakistan lending eurodollars to oil refiners in Iran for trade, for example)

🧑‍🔧 One must make a tough choice by choosing sound money. Money that builds real wealth and destroys claims on wealth. That is the choice today’s central banker seeks to avoid, again.
Why? Because it requires erasing the appearance of rising living standards.
It brings forward truth, and bankers would rather crank up the music instead.
They’d rather continue on, pulling chairs away while everyone dances. Because they know MOST WONT NOTICE,, and there isn’t a reliable system of accountability to hold them responsible.

2025-04-29 13:57:59 GMT

It is not bad that your cost of living should decline rather than increase over time. Unfortunately, it takes from the banker 🏦and gives to the individual 🧑‍🔧. Therein lies the problem.
Deflation in this sense is good, as it allows prices to fall ⬇️ for those who make sound financial decisions, save, and hold money; sound money.
While taking from those who choose to lever up or hold a debt-laden money. Money that pre-spends its future by pulling it forward into today ⌚

Why is Bitcoin’s value rising?
Because as the M2 fiat money supply increases, each unit of currency (like the USD) loses value. When you compare that to Bitcoin—an asset with a fixed, finite supply—its value naturally rises in terms of debased fiat.

I agree that open source,. decentralized, secure principles are non negotiable. I will continue to stay open to new ideas because the space is constantly evolving and it needs to grow if mass adoption is to occur. There will be compromises on centralization that will come and go as people figure this out. But at the end of the day, all finish lines end with the Bitcoin base layer. That is the only place where one can feel financially free.

That is because you are early. Competition will creep up in the future and this only happens with Bitcoin lending tools. If I can get as much Bitcoin collateral as possible, then I will be better off in the future.
So in the future will it be possible to offer a competitive Bitcoin discount and then using that collateral to borrow and make up the difference for materials and supplies at today's cost. As time goes on, my Bitcoin collateral will pay off the loan just by existing as long as I keep working and adding value. I'm borrowing the future value of my stack today in order to grow my business quicker. But I do see your point, I just don't think future Bitcoin businesses can compete once the markets get saturated with value. But I will say, once these young bitcoin businessea grow up, they may not offer that Bitcoin discount anymore, it served its purpose and now it's possible to say no to the customer if the value doesn't align.

For years, faking it worked. In politics. In business. Say what people want to hear—get elected, get the job, move up.
But the internet broke the illusion. Now we see principled people regularly—and we’ve developed a taste for it.
You can’t just mimic anymore. You actually need to believe in something.
That’s why politics feels broken. Most politicians brought up over the last 50 years were rewarded for being chameleons. Same with execs at large orgs. Now they have to relearn the meta. The market demands authenticity. It’s time to believe.

So therefore real estate is really the backbone of the global financial system now whereas gold used to be the backbone of money.
This is a problem because it's not a good form of collateral.
Bitcoin works as a much better form of collateral and I like the idea of dual collateralization of Bitcoin and real.estate.
Bitcoin slowly fullfils the role real estate did which is a real role of money.
There will be different currency systems both public and nation state and private.

2025-04-21 21:05:24 GMT

Real estate is used as collateral within the scope of the Fiat system because money loses value and if you own a scarce asset such as real estate it will go up in nominal value and you can use it to hash against your debt and use the cash flow to pay back your debt. But real estate is not meant to be used in that way.
It actually has a utility value.
Land used to build value and was always agriculture based. But since the Fiat era, now buildings can be built and used as a tangible store of value only because our money doesn't serve as a good store of value.

2025-04-21 20:59:58 GMT

You want to have a collateral that increases in market price over time so that the debt ratio decreases.
Fiat currency serves as horrible collateral.

2025-04-21 20:57:43 GMT

I see money and currency working alongside each other.
Bitcoin will actually allow the dollar to last longer than we expect.
And that's because if the US govt is going to build a Bitcoin position, those positions will increase in value faster than the interest on the existing debt, so by owning bitcoin you can prolong the Fiat system.
Bitcoin is not a risk-on tech stock.
When they add Bitcoin to the balance sheet it actually strengthens the credit worthiness of the country.
So the idea of a Bitcoin money and a fiat currency is not that farfetched of an idea because Bitcoin is really just replacing real estate as a base layer pristine collateral.

2025-04-21 20:37:39 GMT

The best Layer 2's will help increase velocity on the bitcoin network without compromising block size.
And once we get it,
Then bitcoin will be accepted as a medium of exchange.
Then bitcoin will be adopted as a unit of account.
And then bitcoin will go to global GDP divided by 21million.
We will move away from the COMMODITY VALUE of bitcoin which is based on the commodity cycle relative to cost of production, and we will move up that S-curve to MONETARY VALUE which is the entire value of the economy divided by the amount of circulating coins.

2025-04-21 20:10:45 GMT

Bitcoin isn't replacing the dollar, it's replacing the foundation it stood on.

2025-04-21 18:40:41 GMT

Treasury collateral is the foundation and backing of our financial system. It is the Layer 0. All financial products like credit cards, bank deposits, car loans, and mortgages are backed by it.
But it is being devalue and it's deteriorating.
Inflation was caused by increasing the money supply by 40% in just 2 years. Now they think they need to raise rates to fight inflation but as they raise interest rates, they're devaluing Treasury collateral. As yields go up principal value goes down.
Literally the entire backing of the financial system is being devauled with no forward guidance.
We are just left to fend for ourselves.
Bitcoin takes up that fight for us.
