Those Tritium 50kW chargers are really getting to be past their use by date aren't they? Obviously there's pure self interest here driving an older leaf, but I wish they would focus on replacing the remote ones rather than putting extras in places that are already supplied.
There's 2 potential routes to Wanaka from Dunedin and on a recent trip I set off the long way because the Roxburgh charger showing faulted on the short route is one I can't skip. After I left home the Ranfurly charger went offline. I have skipped it once, but back when the leaf had 12 bars and going downhill. I spoke sweetly to it and it delivered a charge, but I would have been considerably inconvenienced if it hadn't

When people rang me a while back it was all on anonymous cell phone numbers. I correctly assumed they were just having to use office cell phones, as calling mine from a landline would have cost too much None of them were blocked, that would be more of a red flag. I might be more wary now.
Medical practices never expect me to know my NIH number. They are all able to look it up.
For confirming my identity they ask for things like date of birth and residential address.

There's a small part of this article that is important to think about: Ministry of Transport figures on serious injury are almost certainly incomplete. I recall reading an article about a study done comparing various records (ACC, hospital and police) and there was a lot of inconsistency.
Feels a bit personal to me - a family member was knocked off their bike by a driver accelerating straight into the side of their bike in a "didn't see you" incident. Though the driver did also claim the cyclist was on the pedestrian crossing to the left of the lane they should have used so it was their fault ???
They suffered whiplash, dislocated knuckles that had been crushed between the handlebars and bonnet and severe bruising on their legs. You could see the audi grill bar impact points individually but most of the side of the leg was deeply coloured, and the cross bar impact on the other thigh also made one wince. The knuckles in particular made it impossible to continue with the practical component of their study and they had to withdraw.
One might expect those to count as at least minor injuries, leading to a careless driving causing injury charge, but no. The police reportedly told the driver that the bike wasn't damaged and the cyclist was fine.
The article also reminds me of a recent conversation I was having with a primarily pedestrian friend. I said expecting bikes and pedestrians to share a footpath was bad for similar reasons as expecting cars and bikes to share roads - he disagreed and when i started talking about speed differentials he said he knew people who say "When i see a bike on the road i just want to run them down"I had to acknowledge I've never heard a single cyclist say that about pedestrians on shared paths.
My family member who wasn't "seen" says one of the things that sticks with them is how terrifyingly long it felt to them being in the full glare of the cars headlamps.

I can see situations where there needs to be this provision. If they got the infection from a family member or some other person that the family will protect rather than have a concern for the safety of the child, then it could be very unsafe for the parents to know the kid is getting treated. This doesn't look at all like that situation.

Well actually I appear up be wrong about the motorway status. The road is a state highway, the land is designated a motorway, as it was when the road eas built. Motorways were obviously the cool thing to aspire to in 1957!
Another bit of mismatch between the legal designation of land and the road on the land is the town belt. That Queens drive "road" closure? Legally it's designated a reserve. The council could just close it at will, yet they take a softly softly approach.

It may once have been officially called that. Fairly sure I've seen police and other such officials do so. When I checked it's designation in frustration I found it's not currently legally a motorway, and I suspect it never was. It does have an overbridge or 3 though! And no cycling signs at all entrances.
I do know at least one "born and bred" person who ascribes to the circular logic of - But if it's not a motorway, why do people call the other road "the old motorway"? and I just couldn't quite work out what to say.

I suspect it is still in Dunedin City local government area. But a motorway? It does have similarities to the "northern motorway" though. One lane each way, divided by a painted on safety barrier. Intersections. Windy, hilly with the odd narrow bridge. Most people here are happy to call that but of SH1 a motorway, so maybe we should give SH87 a pass

Strangely I used the term "sunset industry" back then, and was treated to a tale about how in the 70's we were all told we'd run out of oil, but they kept finding more. I didn't bother mentioning energy return on energy invested. I guess there was some self interest there, rent to buy deals are an incredibly generous thing to be offered. Even at market interest rates an agreed price is usually effectively a gift to the tenant

9kg bottles almost run a califont, without cylinder rental or inspection fees. But it's reportedly a bit of a nuisance in a Southland winter, and even in warmer places you need to keep the bottles well topped up.
I had an interesting time going iinto a rent to buy arrangement arguing to keep the old electric plus wetback system. The cooktop was being replaced with gas and the plan was to get gas hot water at the same time. My "I don't want to have another appliance using gas when the industry should be on its way out" wasn't particularly persuasive. Fortunately the access was likely to make delivery of the large bottles potentially problematic and that was a more compelling argument.

Also - I strongly suspect the reservoir is treated water. The bores and treatment plant can run at a steady pace and keep the reservoir topped up with water that's ready to go out on demand. It wouldn't be like the open air dams in the Waitakere and Hunua ranges which collect surface water and store it before it's treated.

Cloaks can be worn over armour can't they? But it will increase the sizing challenge.
I once saw an impressive set of costume armour made from 2L milk bottles. The pieces and shaping were apparently very well done, it used a lot of silver spray paint though. The armourer did go on to greater things. Last I heard worked for LoTR. Does not seem to have a social media presence though.

Yes.Bob is right. Apparently the invitation I declined was only to create a patient portal into the account that was registered when my GP changed to manage my health in 2023. Patient portal is opt in, everything the GP uses is opt out, but you have to know to opt out. I obviously didn't read their invite email closely enough to work that out. I cannot find out from the receptionist how much they used it. (rightly so) I'll have to bug a nurse or doctor, but at least I have confirmed my suspicion it exists.

I went to school with one of his sons. I was too young then to know that bullied kids become bullies, or I might have had a bit more understanding of why he was that way. As an adult it was disturbing more than surprising to read his ex-wife's account of that time in their life. Note also his appearance on fair go. Do understand the guy was probably congenitally incapable of not smiling, but the smirky grin didn't make his apology seem sincere

We replace it with higher income taxes on very high income people and a wealth tax/capital gains tax.
I know people say the millionaires and very high income earners will leave, but really? Not only does the experience where countries have done this show that most of them stay, from this country where would they go. Somewhere with higher taxes.
Pretty much everywhere else in the OECD has some form of wealth tax *and* higher income tax. Yet we persist with the neoliberal trickle down experiment where regressive taxes drive inequality and austerity cuts to services leave everyone worse off.

I really must get round to finding out more about debt, and quantitative easing - I recall that being the euphemism for money printing? It really does seem as if something that should be a useful tool has gone rogue and is used to cause immense harm. Councils borrowing (more expensively than the alternative that NACT 1st ditched) to cover 3 waters costs seems a predictable influence on this election. I am so annoyed

Almost all people who are eligible to vote are in a household/living situation that contributes to rates revenue in some way. It's harder to register to vote if you have no address, and rent almost universally covers the rates on a property. Commercial leases can specify the tenant must pay the rates on the property in addition to the rent. Otherwise the landlords name is on the bill but the tenant is paying through their rent. (And in some cases the landlord gets an extra vote in an area they do not live in)
Is a citizen tax one where every person has to pay? I have 2 problems with that - one it's the classic regressive tax where it's a bigger proportion of a poor persons income than a rich person's.
And 2 it's basically a poll tax, which even if the regime isn't trying to exclude voters (yes, that has happened) will have the effect of disenfranchising people who are having trouble affording it.

Or they create a meaningless target like Nick Smith's 0.61 mg/L nitrogen in water one. Which, yes, is a level of nitrogen that's detrimental to aquatic life in a lab. But in the real rivers and lakes the nitrogen isn't killing the fish directly. Algal blooms triggered by much lower levels have already caused fatally detrimental swings in oxygen levels.

I do wonder if it has had an impact on cones not being put out.
Resurfacing work on Cumberland st for example - there was nothing to show where the bike lane is on the left hand side of the road. Most of my trips along the traffic in the LH lane was partly or wholly driving in where it should be. There was sometimes more space on the RH side of the road.
A good long line of cones would probably have gone the trick, but perhaps at cost of causing double irritation

On the one hand it seems straightforward - if there's a performance deficit for driving that might not be obvious to you at the time that applies doubly to cycling where I am in a more dangerous environment - other vehicles responding differently to me means the same physical environment is a different risk environment.
But it was pretty clear that a chunk of the advice was a blanket professional duty to let me know that my insurance would be invalid. Maybe influenced by the anaesthetist's professional insurance requirements?
And this may be a little arrogant of me, but I don't feel my cycling poses a great risk of causing massively expensive damage to another vehicle. I've never even investigated if it's feasible to get third party cover for my bike.

Concrete is porous, which is why so many basement conversions are so unhealthy. Concrete retaining walls need a damp-proof membrane between them and the earth behind them if they are to be enclosed in an interior space. These eco-reef things are meant to be submerged in water.
Whilst I don't have a lot of knowledge of hempcrete I have a strong suspicion it's like straw bale, rammed earth and adobe houses. Which, the wishful thinking of various alternative lifestylers notwithstanding, are not suitable for all climates. You can do a certain amount with clever design, and high quality waterproof coatings. but if there's something in there that needs to be kept quite dry to maintain structural integrity its really only suitable for a desert. At least hempcrete doesn't make a rodent habitat the way straw bale houses do.

Hoping it is ok to impose on you and ask for advice for what I can do to make my messages more visible to other members? It seems that they are getting slightly unusual messages - not the usual waiting to decrypt, but more along the lines of my account not trusting them enough to show it to them.
Bizarrely it seems to be room specific, so they can see my messages in other chats.
I've force updated to the latest version of the classic element app, to no avail. There's a suggestion I leave the room and rejoin it, but I am somewhat reluctant. Currently I can see all (I the messages (I think) and am trying to work around by asking more generally visible members to repost mine, and I can see that going downhill.
*Admin is not always hugely responsive, so haven't actually shared the blog with them yet

Emily Writes has moved off substack, so if that's what was holding you back it might be time to show some love now. Experience so far is that it's easy to do a free subscription. Next step is to have a look in the account section to see what a paid subscription looks like.

I miss the interviewers who did their homework. Jesse Mulligan is particularly annoying that way. His bumbling around being clueless is not the best use of the interviewees time. He wastes so many opportunities to have more interesting enlightening discussions.

Anyone know what Māhoe (Hinahina, Mellicytus ramiflorus) is like for burning?

That would have been true when I was a Westie, but now they are timetable every 30 minutes until cowboy time (9.50) on a Sunday night. Every other night of the week they run past midnight. Contrast to my Southern city where they are hourly on a Sunday, and the last bus is so early that during daylight savings time they don't need their headlights

I think the argument for compulsory medical treatment against someone's wishes needs to be strong. Maybe I'm overly influenced by the sad outcome for Turing?
I do strongly suspect that the end result of an investigation into the trauma of the treatment programme (noting again that it's not entirely voluntary if its required to have a parole board release you) will be similar to the former IRD employee's bathroom case. But I don't have the information and can see a strong case for making sure. If these programmes are not fit for purpose we need to know. If they are it's good to have it confirmed and to expose this guy to deserved opprobrium. My biggest concern is the role of vexatious litigation in further distressing the victims, and I hope they and their whānau are well supported through the process

The page that link takes me to doesn't say they are locally owned. It talks in friendly terms about 1.85 million kiwis a lot, which makes them seem local, I guess. But it's not at all specific about ownership, or where our info is hosted.
I do feel qualms when I get messages about test results from my hardworking GP late at night, and I can see it would be convenient for both of us for me to access them myself. But you aren't the only person I've seen raise concerns, so I've not gone there.

My father wasn't able to go to a hospice. He breathed his last clogging up a bed on an overworked short staffed general medicine ward. We were still working through the process of getting the family court to assign authority to make financial decisions (paying for a private hospital) on his behalf. Hospice wouldn't take him because his stay there could have exceeded 3 weeks

Moncrieff-Spittle's litigation I referred to was where he was one of 2 taking the Auckland Council to court for cancelling a booking. The speakers were Canadians Stefan Molyneux and Lauren Southern. I'm told they deleted chunks of their online writings after the Christchurch terrorist referenced or quoted them in his manifesto. Stochastic terrorism at work?
Back in the Twitter days I was taken to task by a self styled politics expert who insisted people should rank Moncrieff-Spittle and Richard Seager above Lee Van der Vis.
He was unable to see that last equal (all unranked) would do what he felt necessary (not voting for VdV) without telling people they had to vote for an odious cooker.
