If you were born after 1994 in South Africa, it’s easy to forget that being gay used to be a crime. 🏳️‍🌈🚫 While the racism of #apartheid is well-documented, the regime's extreme homophobia is often overlooked.
Under the National Party, it wasn't just "frowned upon", it was illegal and severely punished. Police raided homes, meeting others were unsafe, and the military treated homosexuality as a sickness to be "cured" through torture.
The Horror of the "Aversion Project"
This is the darkest chapter of gay history in South Africa. Since all white males were conscripted into the military or South African Defense Force (SADF), gay men could not escape the state's grip. The SADF viewed homosexuality as a "sickness" that weakened the army.
Gay conscripts were often sent to Ward 22 at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria. "Curing" homosexuality under the direction of psychiatrists like Dr. Aubrey Levin, gay soldiers were subjected to electric shock therapy. They were shown homoerotic images and shocked until they associated same-sex attraction with pain.
When shock therapy failed, some men were chemically castrated.
And then there was forced sex changes: Perhaps most shockingly, it is estimated that up to 900 gay men (mostly young conscripts aged 16–24) were coerced into gender reassignment surgery to "turn" them into women, because the regime’s logic was that it was better to be a woman than a gay man. They were often then discharged with no support.
From Darkness to Light
While the old regime was using science and violence to try and erase queer identity, a fight for their existence was beginning in the most unlikely place: a prison cell.
The reason South Africa have one of the most progressive Constitutions in the world today isn't an accident. It’s because of a man named Simon Nkoli.
When arrested for treason against the apartheid state, he refused to hide who he was. He famously did the unthinkable, he came out and told his fellow activists in prison:
"I am black and I am gay. I cannot separate the two parts of me... So when I fight for my freedom I must fight against both oppressors."
His bravery forced the liberation movements to recognise that you cannot fight for freedom while discriminating against your own. Because of him, South Africa became the first country in the world to write #lgbtq rights into its Constitution. 🇿🇦📜

This isn't your grandmother's opera (though she'd probably love it too). With Magdalene Minnaar directing an incredible all-SA cast, Kamal Khan conducting the Cape Town Phil, and Gregory Maqoma's choreography bringing the house down alongside Jazzart Dance Theatre. 🎭

It still amazes me how many people I meet who are never content. Always chasing the next thing. More, better, faster.
And I’m not talking mansions, yachts, or private islands, I mean even the small stuff. Like nothing is ever enough. They’re forever chasing the next little improvement.
I don’t know how or when it happened, but one of the biggest blessings in my life is this: I am content. I’m happy. I have what I need. I have what I want.
I’m not itching for more. I don’t feel lacking or wanting.
Sure, I’m not perfect, I could do better in plenty of areas, but I don’t obsess over it.
I don’t need a better version of my life. I already love the one I have.
And honestly, I feel a little sad for the people who never find this feeling.
Because no upgrade will ever give you the peace contentment does.

The Springhare is one of Africa’s quietest curiosities, not quite a rabbit, not quite a kangaroo, and definitely not what most people expect to find bouncing through the night.
Native to southern and eastern Africa, this nocturnal creature spends its days burrowed beneath the earth, emerging only after sunset to feed on grasses and seeds. With powerful hind legs and a long balancing tail, it can leap up to 3 metres in a single bound, vanishing into the night with a flash of fluff and silence.
Despite its rabbit-like ears and soft appearance, the springhare has no close relatives in either rabbits or kangaroos. It’s part of a small, unique family all its own, a reminder that sometimes nature doesn’t follow templates.

"Self-help" now is about "dominating," "conquering," and turning every personal shortcoming into someone else's fault. Instead of healthy growth, many young men are being radicalised into believing they must constantly prove their worth through extreme ideologies, rigid mindsets, and endless hustle culture.
We're seeing kindness replaced by competition, vulnerability by aggression, and genuine self-improvement by superficial, toxic bravado.
Thank goodness I have a natural aversion to this self-help nonsense.

I'm not calling anything a moon 😅 but if you read the article - Edward Ashton at Academia Sinica highlights the challenge of defining what qualifies as a moon, especially as telescopes detect smaller objects. According to the article, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) recognizes these newly discovered objects as moons, even though they are small, ranging from 2 to 4 kilometers in diameter. However, the IAU has decided not to prioritize naming moons smaller than 1 kilometer unless a spacecraft visits them.
