Just did this with 33TB from an old NAS to its replacement. Gigabit seems fast until you need to transfer tens of terabytes hehe. Had two 4U servers stacked on top of each other in the living room for a week.

Okay this is wild: I just noticed that changing 'PasswordAuthentication' to 'no' in /etc/ssh/sshd_config is no longer enough to disable password authentication in #ubuntu. That's because Ubuntu Server now by default creates a sshd_config.d/50-cloud-init.conf file which contains 'PasswordAuthentication yes' which takes priority over sshd_config.
I would've unknowingly left password auth on if I hadn't double checked.
Why?

I guess they aren't really deal breakers for me either since I keep using it... I think I worded my post more aggressively than I should've, it's not that it doesn't "work for its main use case" but that it's not that good at its main use case either
I have looked a bit at Seafile as an alternative, but haven't moved over to it... I'd need to find an alternative solution for calendar, since I use NC's CalDAV functionality as well.

* When uploading a large file using drag-and-drop in the web UI, there is no progress indicator... There is a progress bar if you use the file upload button instead
* When a conflict occurs, I would expect a graphical file sync client to show a GUI letting me select which version to keep (or both); Nextcloud just renames one of the files
* The app in dark mode on macOS looks pretty bad and has white text on yellow background...
I could go on and on :(

To give some more specifics, just from the top of my head:
* The desktop client is basically incompatible with GNOME (you know, by far the most common DE on Linux) since it relies heavily on indicator icons which don't exist on GNOME
* Under Wayland, when clicking the app icon, its window appears at some random place on the screen instead of under the icon
* When playing audio through the iOS app, you often end up with two audio tracks playing on top of each other

I wish I shared that experience, but honestly, the cloud storage part seems to have taken a back seat to the other semi-functional functionality... the sync clients are pretty bad apps and are quite buggy, it handles conflicts terribly, every little file transfer is a separate TCP connection to a freshly spawned PHP process so transfer speeds and server CPU usage is pretty bad, the modile apps and the files web UI both have had pretty bad long-standing bugs, etc :(

Steam is acting like plenty of software has acted for almost as long as there has been software with graphical interfaces, and it works perfectly fine on every single platform except for specifically GNOME.

I like #gnome but it's so silly to have to use the terminal or task manager any time you want to properly exit an app which you normally exit through right clicking the tray icon and clicking "quit"
Steam is currently confused about something, its UI isn't working, but right clicking the dock icon and clicking "Quit" just minimizes the window, clicking the app again causes Steam to come back in the same confused state

Wait you're using a python script to generate a Jinja2 template to generate hare code to define blocks?

rsync is cool and stuff but I soooo frequently want to just copy a directory into a place but I absentmindedly leave in the trailing '/' from the tab complete so rsync copies over the *contents* of the directory instead of the directory itself
I have filled up home directories with garbage so many times

Thanks, I was just looking for this.
I like how 70% of it is dedicated to making fun of DHH for not being rich enough... out of everything I'd criticise DHH for, "your businesses haven't made you enough money" surely wouldn't be my main criticism?
And then the rest is just pretending the old trademark policy which permitted the use of "WP" for any purpose never existed
This is extremely embarrassing, I now understand why he deleted it but wow. This guy is self destructing hard

As a programmer who genuinely likes going to an office, interacting with my colleagues in person, getting out of the house and having separate places to work and to live .. it's honestly disheartening that all I see about RTO is about how being at an office sucks and you're an idiot if you think there's value in being face to face
This isn't a "pro strict RTO policy" post, but I must admit that my life would suck really bad if my colleagues hadn't mostly returned to the office #programming

Yeah I should... my issue is the network effects, but I may be over-thinking those. Maybe I could have github mirrors of my repos and a huge disclaimer that the main repo is on codeberg and PRs/issues on github will be ignored?

How many times must I tell #github "I want to see fewer repository recommendations" before it stops showing me repository recommendations
And what's up with #tech companies completely ignoring the idea of consent, why has every "don't show this" or "no" option" turned into "I want to see less of this" or "ask me later" or "X" buttons which just hide the nagging until the next page load or app launch

How do I count the age of a desktop? I built it around maybe 2013 and never "bought a new desktop" but it has been ship of theseus'd beyond recognition, I don't think there are any original parts left. My current case is from 2017, the CPU and motherboard from 2021. The drives have accumulated over time and I now have quite a few ones, I think some may be from that original purchase in 2013ish?
