I think.. one thing that abusers, especially recovered/recovering ones, are aware of is the capacity of situations to become inadvertently abusive.
I typically lack the malice to intentionally hurt people, and I lack the self-centered drive to insist on my own emotions when compared to the emotions of my friends and the people I love.
So..
One thing I never do?
Beg people to stay when they decide they don't want to be friends with me.
No matter how bad it hurts. No matter how wrong I think the decision may be, if.. somebody I love comes to me and says "this isn't worth it anymore," I'm so afraid of ACCIDENTALLY manipulating them, coercing them, into staying to their own detriment that.. that I tend to just let them go.
And it's one of those things that never gets easier with age. You don't forget people. You accumulate scars and memories for posterity.
And you hope that, by doing what they think is right for themselves, they're happy. Even if their happiness doesn't involve you.
