Following your context, I'd personally compare the Linux desktop to a house you own, as opposed to one you rent with other, proprietary OSes (which I'm assuming you're equating to the "modern house").
If the floor boards now squeak, the back door doesn't latch anymore and the toilet lever is broken, sounds like a lazy and/or inexperienced homeowner, rather than the design or quality of the house itself.

One of the first file managers I used for Linux was Midnight Commander. It was introduced to me by a good friend who was helping me learn the ropes early on. Over the years I've grown to appreciate its longevity and feature set. It's an incredible and versatile terminal based file manager that's just as important to me as vim and screen.

@npub1zaw…tdg8 That reminds me of the EEE-PCs (of which I still have one!), very nice. I've been drooling over the Clockwork uConsole cyberdeck lately. The keys are much different but maybe different enough to find some neat use cases. And obviously a USB/BT keyboard isn't out of the question here.

@npub1h4m…f22a I've seen cases where basically HDCP barfs all over itself and will refuse to either display something or play sound until you reconnect and let it renegotiate all the fun copy protection bullsh*t. But that was many years ago, I'd think stuff like this would have been ironed out by now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Governments seem to be on the track of criminalizing strong #encryption "for the children".
Technologists of the world need to unite and put pressure on governments to not continue this route of public persuasion. It's naive and dangerous for everybody. There are better ways to protect children than circumventing encryption that protects us all from bad actors.
