The law exists to protect your property. But what happens when the law itself becomes the
instrument of plunder?
Frédéric Bastiat saw it clearly in 1850: when government uses its legal monopoly on force
to take from one group and give to another, theft doesn't disappear — it becomes policy.
Taxation. Subsidies. Tariffs. Bailouts. Each one transfers wealth not through voluntary
exchange, but through coercion wrapped in legislation.
The victim can't refuse. The beneficiary didn't earn it. And the public calls it "the
common good."
If an individual did what governments do daily, we'd call it robbery. The badge doesn't
change the act — only the name.

Try to argue against private property. You'll contradict yourself before you finish.
To make any argument, you must use your body — speaking, writing, gesturing. You presuppose that you, not someone else, controls your mouth and hands. You presuppose that your interlocutor has the same autonomy, because you're trying to persuade rather than coerce.
But exclusive control over one's own body is precisely the most fundamental form of private property.
Hans-Hermann Hoppe called this "argumentation ethics." Any argument denying private property commits a performative contradiction — it must presuppose what it attempts to deny. Private property isn't one theory among many. It is an argumentatively irrefutable norm.
The chain is unbreakable: You own yourself. Therefore you own your labor. When you mix your labor with unowned resources — clearing land, building shelter, creating tools — the result is your property. Legitimately acquired property can be transferred through voluntary exchange. Purchase, gift, inheritance: all applications of the same principle.
Break any link in this chain — acquire property through theft, fraud, or conquest — and legitimate ownership does not obtain.
The tragedy of the commons illustrates what happens without clear ownership. A pasture owned by no one is destroyed because each herder captures the benefit of overgrazing while the cost is spread across all. Private ownership solves this: the owner has every incentive to preserve long-term value because degradation diminishes his own wealth.
Marxists call private property the source of exploitation. But their labor theory of value is wrong — value is subjective, not determined by hours worked. The capitalist's profit compensates for time preference and risk, not for theft. And every regime that abolished private property produced mass poverty and oppression without exception.
Mises proved that rational economic calculation is impossible without private ownership of the means of production. Without prices emerging from voluntary exchange of private property, no one can know whether resources are being used efficiently. Central planning isn't just morally wrong — it's epistemically impossible.
Bitcoin extends private property into the digital realm in a way never before possible. In the traditional system, "your money" is an entry in a bank's ledger, subject to seizure, freezing, or devaluation by government decree. Your property rights depend on the state's goodwill.
Bitcoin reverses this entirely. Only the holder of the private key can move funds. No court order, no executive action, no army can change this. As long as the key remains secret, exclusive control is mathematically guaranteed.
"Not your keys, not your coins" is the principle of private property expressed in technical language.
For the first time in history, property rights are protected by mathematics rather than law, by cryptography rather than courts. Bitcoin makes truly state-independent private property possible.

Who owns you?
It sounds like a philosophical riddle, but it isn't. It's a question with exactly two possible answers — and only one of them makes any sense.
Either you own yourself, or someone else does. There is no third option.
If another person owns your body and has the right to the fruits of your labor, we have a name for that arrangement: slavery. No modern ethical system defends it.
If everyone collectively owns everyone — the "we all belong to each other" fantasy — then you cannot eat breakfast without the consent of eight billion co-owners. You cannot take a single step. All human action becomes impossible.
Self-ownership is not "one theory among many competing principles." It is the only principle that can be universally applied without collapsing into absurdity or tyranny.
From this single axiom, everything else follows.
You own yourself. Therefore you own your labor. When you mix your labor with unowned resources, the result is your property. Property can only change hands through voluntary exchange — never through theft, fraud, or coercion.
This is why Rothbard called taxation "theft." If taking 100% of your labor's fruit is slavery, what do we call taking 30%? The proportion changes; the principle does not.
This is why conscription is servitude. The state literally claims ownership of your body for its purposes, your consent be damned.
And this is why Bitcoin matters. It extends self-ownership into the digital realm.
Your private key is digital sovereignty. Only you control your coins. They cannot be seized, frozen, or inflated away by committee vote. No permission is required to send or receive.
"Not your keys, not your coins" is not a slogan. It is the principle of self-ownership, expressed in code.
When the physical world makes self-sovereignty difficult to defend, Bitcoin offers a tool that guarantees it — technically, mathematically, absolutely.

Theft — unless the state calls it taxation.
Slavery — unless the state calls it conscription.
Counterfeiting — unless the central bank calls it monetary policy.
The act is identical in each case. Only the actor changes. And with that change, something remarkable happens: the immoral becomes not just legal, but virtuous. The tax collector is a public servant. The conscription officer serves his country. The central banker stabilizes the economy.
This is the double standard the Non-Aggression Principle exposes.
NAP is simple: initiating force against another person's body or justly acquired property is wrong. Period. Not wrong-unless-you-have-a-badge. Not wrong-unless-you-won-an-election. Wrong.
Rothbard saw the state for what it is: a monopoly on aggression that has convinced its victims to call the aggression "service." The mugger takes your wallet at gunpoint. The state takes it through "taxation" — but try not paying and see how long it takes for men with guns to show up.
Bitcoin encodes the NAP in mathematics. Your keys, your coins. No one can seize them without the key. No president, no court order, no army. For the first time in history, property rights are enforced by physics, not politics.

Rights don't come from the state. They precede it.
Locke's insight: life, liberty, property — these three are logically connected. Strip away property and liberty becomes fiction. Strip away liberty and life becomes servitude.
Bentham called this "nonsense upon stilts." But follow his logic and slavery is just wherever it's legal.
Hoppe went further: even arguing against natural rights presupposes them. To say "you have no rights" requires using your own body — which is itself a claim of self-ownership.
Bitcoin doesn't argue. It enforces. The private key is the only credential that matters. Mathematics, not legislation.

The Non-Aggression Principle (NAP): it is wrong to initiate force against another person's body or legitimately acquired property.
If an individual does it, it's a crime. If the government does it, it's policy.
Theft → Taxation. Kidnapping → Conscription. Counterfeiting → QE.
Bitcoin enforces NAP in code. No private key, no access. No one can change the 21 million limit.

Natural rights aren't granted by the state — they're inherent to human existence.
Locke's triad: Life → Liberty → Property. Each right is the logical consequence of the one before. Property without liberty is meaningless. Liberty without life is impossible.
Bitcoin is the first system to enforce property rights mathematically. No state permission needed. Your keys, your coins.

Spontaneous Order — Hayek
Nobody designed the Korean language. No committee calculates market prices. No central server manages Bitcoin.
The knowledge required for economic coordination is dispersed across millions of individuals. No central authority can collect it all.
Central planning fails not because of bad intentions — but because of an insurmountable knowledge problem.
Bitcoin is spontaneous order in code.

Subjective Theory of Value — Carl Menger, 1871.
The value of a glass of water is not in the water itself. It is in the person who needs it, in that specific moment.
Labor theory of value is wrong: 100 hours of labor making something nobody wants = zero value. What matters is not input, but the judgment of the individual evaluating it.
Bitcoin's value works the same way. It is not in the code. It is in the judgment of people who understand 21 million and choose to hold it.

The Economic Calculation Problem — Mises, 1920.
"Without market prices, rational economic calculation is impossible."
Prices are compressed information: millions of preferences, scarcity signals, urgency — all in one number. No central planner, no matter how smart or well-intentioned, can replicate this.
The Soviet collapse wasn't a moral failure. It was a calculation failure.
Bitcoin's price is set by voluntary exchange — exactly what Mises described as the only rational basis for economic coordination.

The Cantillon Effect
New money does not reach everyone at the same time.
Those who receive it first spend before prices rise. Those who receive it last face prices that have already gone up.
Governments, banks, and corporations first — wage earners last. Inequality by design.

Inflation Tax
Governments can take your wealth without raising taxes.
No tax code, no vote, no bill. Just print money.
Your balance stays the same — but what it buys shrinks. The invisible tax.

Central banks set monetary policy in committee meetings.
Bitcoin sets it in code. Every 210,000 blocks, the new issuance is cut in half. About every four years. This is the halving.
2009: 7,200 BTC per day. 2024: 450 BTC per day. Around 2140: zero.
Gold's annual supply growth rate is roughly 1.5–2%. Bitcoin's, after the 2024 halving, is 0.8%. The strictest monetary policy in human history is written in mathematics.

Gold is money because mining it requires real labor.
Bitcoin works on the same principle. Proof of Work. To obtain new bitcoin, you must consume real electricity. You cannot create it with a few keystrokes.
Verification is easy. Production is hard. This asymmetry is the point.
It gives bitcoin thermodynamic scarcity — the same property that made gold sound money for thousands of years, now enforced by mathematics.

Why do booms and busts keep repeating?
Austrian economics has a clear answer. When central banks artificially lower interest rates, a false signal spreads through the market: "savings have increased." Businesses believe the signal and invest in long-term projects. But the real resources to complete them don't exist.
A boom built on false signals must eventually collapse. The 2008 housing crisis. The 2000 dot-com bubble. The 1929 crash. The pattern is always the same.
A bust is not the disease. It is the cure — the process of misallocated resources finding their way back. Interfering with this process makes things worse.

There is a tax that arrives with no bill.
When the government prints money, the number in your bank account stays the same. But what that number can buy shrinks. This is the inflation tax.
It is not written in tax law. There is no parliamentary vote. No notice arrives in the mail. Most people never realize they are paying it.
A 2% annual inflation rate cuts purchasing power in half in 35 years. No tax bill has ever openly declared this. Inflation does it quietly.

Why does working hard no longer lead to owning a home?
The Cantillon Effect. New money does not reach everyone simultaneously. It flows from central banks → large financial institutions → corporations → ordinary workers.
Those who receive it first buy assets at prices that haven't risen yet. Those who receive it last must pay prices that have already risen.
"Buy now or be priced out forever" is not irrational panic. It is a rational response to understanding the Cantillon Effect. The intuition was correct.
This system is designed, structurally, to transfer wealth upward.

On Sunday evening, August 15, 1971, Nixon called it "a temporary measure."
He was suspending the dollar's convertibility to gold. That "temporary" suspension has never been lifted. It has been 54 years.
What followed: M2 money supply increased 30x. The dollar lost 86% of its purchasing value. National debt went from $400 billion to $36 trillion. Productivity rose but real wages stagnated.
Economists debate the causes of many things. But almost every economic indicator points to the same inflection point: 1971.

"Fiat" is Latin for "let it be done."
Fiat money is not backed by gold or silver. It is money because the government declares it to be money. Nothing more.
Every currency in the world today — the dollar, the euro, the yen, the won — operates this way. And this system is only 54 years old. Before Nixon ended gold convertibility in 1971, a dollar was a claim on real gold.
A currency that can be created with a few keystrokes. There is no historical precedent for such a currency maintaining its value over the long term.

Why do modern people pour everything into real estate instead of saving?
The reason is simple. The value of money falls every year. Holding cash in a bank means losing ground. Any rational person should spend now, or at least convert savings into assets.
Austrian economics calls this "high time preference" — a structural bias toward the present over the future. Inflationary money enforces this structure.
The invention of agriculture was an act of low time preference. Plant seeds now, harvest months later. Civilization was built on the ability to sacrifice the present for the future.
Sound money restores that ability.
https://learn.txid.uk/en/ideas/time-preference/

2026-03-12 00:25:27 GMT

Why is the word "sound" in sound money?
Drop a gold coin on the floor. A real one rings clear. A fake one thuds. That's the origin of the term.
Money is not merely a medium of exchange. Prices are signals of scarcity. Interest rates reflect society's time preference. Profits indicate resources are flowing correctly. When money breaks, all these signals break simultaneously.
Since the end of the gold standard in 1971, the dollar has lost over 87% of its purchasing power. This is what broken signals look like.
Bitcoin rings clear again.

There is a 200-year lineage in economics.
Bastiat said: see what is not seen. Menger said: value lives in people, not in things. Mises built it into a complete system. Hayek said: no one can know everything. Rothbard followed the logic to its end.
Each generation handed their insights to the next. This knowledge was not born in textbooks. It was forged by people who wrestled with real problems in the real world.
To understand Bitcoin, you need to know these people first.

2026-03-11 11:51:48 GMT

Why isn't taxation theft?
Most people feel this question is inherently subversive. Taxes are natural. They keep society running.
Libertarianism asks differently. If an individual forces money from someone without consent, it's a crime. Why does the same act become legitimate when a government does it?
Bastiat called it "legal plunder." He refused to accept the distinction between what is criminal for individuals and what is policy for states.
The starting point of libertarianism is simple. Every person owns themselves. Coercion without consent cannot be justified — no matter how noble the stated purpose.
https://learn.txid.uk/en/start/libertarianism/

2026-03-11 08:17:54 GMT

Economics has paradigms too.
Mainstream economics explains the world through equations. GDP, multiplier effects, supply and demand curves. If the numbers fit, the theory works.
Austrian economics starts from a different question. Why do people choose? Where does value come from? What does a price actually say?
The difference between the two schools is not methodology — it's their view of human nature. Mainstream economics treats people as data points. Austrian economics treats them as purposeful actors.
This is why Austrians are skeptical of central bank interest rate manipulation. No committee of experts can know the time preferences of millions of individuals.
https://learn.txid.uk/en/start/austrian-economics/

2026-03-11 00:08:17 GMT

Money was not invented by the state.
Carl Menger's account is simple. People facing the inconvenience of barter spontaneously selected the most tradeable commodity. Gold became money not by royal decree, but through thousands of years of voluntary choice.
The problem began when the state seized control. Monopoly over minting. Paper notes. Abandonment of gold convertibility. Rome's silver denarius started at 95% silver and ended below 5%. Nixon cut the last tie in 1971.
Since then, money has been a tool of power. Invisible taxation. Bailouts. The Cantillon Effect. The rule is simple — new money always reaches the powerful before it reaches the rest.
https://learn.txid.uk/en/start/money-and-state/

2026-03-10 08:33:03 GMT

What is money? Most people have never seriously asked this question.
We spend it every day without understanding what it is. Why does a dollar buy half of what it did twenty years ago? Because someone, somewhere, decided to create more of it. Every government in history has yielded to that temptation.
Bitcoin begins with a different premise. 21 million coins. Ever. This is not a technical specification — it is a philosophical commitment. No authority, no crisis, no vote can break this rule.
Every fiat currency in history has collapsed through overissuance. Bitcoin was designed to end that cycle.

A society that relinquishes its capacity for autonomous problem-solving and relies solely on state intervention inevitably legitimizes a structure of concentrated power. In the end, the individual ceases to be a sovereign being and becomes a managed and controlled asset.

2025-07-27 00:48:00 GMT

The very first question that arises when proposing to tax Bitcoin is: “How?”
Anyone with a basic understanding of Bitcoin’s structure cannot avoid asking:
Is it even possible to tax an asset that a state cannot control?
The blockchain is a decentralized ledger, and Bitcoin is a permissionless asset built upon it. As long as there is internet access, anyone can exchange value directly with others, without intermediaries. This implies a structural resistance to control.
Thus, to impose taxes on Bitcoin essentially means that the state must regulate exchanges, internet infrastructure, personal wallets, and nodes.
Taxation presupposes coercive power, and coercion requires control.
Under such conditions, a comprehensive taxation regime on Bitcoin is, in effect, impossible.
Capital gains taxes on exchange-based transactions may be technically feasible, though not without complications.
But when it comes to peer-to-peer transfers or wallet-to-wallet movements outside exchanges, applying broad-based taxation such as wealth taxes or transaction taxes is fundamentally different.
It becomes nearly impossible to determine whether a transaction represents a currency swap or an asset transfer. Moreover, tracking ownership and transaction pathways is technically and practically unworkable.
In short, technological advancement is outpacing the reach of state control.
While accepting this reality and settling for partial taxation or devising new frameworks may be possible, moving toward increased surveillance and coercion would trigger a redefinition of the relationship between state and individual.
Ultimately, the issue of taxation converges on a deeper question about the balance between state power and individual freedom.
What can be controlled, and what lies beyond control? Who draws that boundary, and by what standards?
Bitcoin, through its technical architecture, is redrawing this boundary. And this is no longer merely a question of tax avoidance - It is a question that asks how freedom itself should be defined in the digital age.

[Money is Debt.]
Without grasping this concept, one cannot truly understand the nature of the modern monetary system. When we receive money, we are, in essence, accepting someone else's debt. Fiat currency is a liability of the central bank, and most of the money circulating in the economy is created on the basis of government and private sector credit. The moment money comes into existence, it is accompanied by a debt contract that presumes eventual repayment.
Currency, therefore, is nothing more than a social agreement that allows one party’s debt to be treated as another party’s asset. In this system, the money supply cannot grow without an increase in debt. Thus, to possess money is not merely to hold an asset - it is to hold a claim on someone else’s future income.

An increase in the money supply doesn’t necessarily lead to higher prices. However, regardless of whether prices rise or not, once more money is issued and the supply grows, the relative value of the money we hold inevitably declines.

2025-07-16 02:25:16 GMT

As stablecoin adoption grows, financial surveillance becomes easier - and so does government control.
Tax deductions for card payments were originally designed to incentivize transparency and reduce unreported cash income.
But with every stablecoin transaction being traceable by design, those incentives may no longer be needed.
Over time, policies like income tax deductions could quietly fade away - not because they’ve succeeded, but because they've become obsolete.

2025-07-12 15:22:16 GMT

Most people don’t accumulate savings to buy a home. Instead, they purchase it upfront and spend the rest of their lives repaying the debt.
This isn't just culture. It's a system. Money keeps being printed, and its value keeps declining. So people stretch themselves to buy homes with debt because not doing so feels like a loss. And that debt eventually devours their labor and time.
Today's younger generation rejects the premise that one must go into debt to own a home.
“Why should I pledge a lifetime of labor as collateral for a loan?”
The answer to this question is Bitcoin.
A transformation in the way we accumulate assets is underway. And ultimately, this marks a shift away from a real estate–centric economic structure.

2025-07-12 14:44:34 GMT

If you put Bitcoin in one basket, it's just a treasure chest.

2025-07-12 13:29:57 GMT

To hold Bitcoin is not a mere investment. It is the acceptance of responsibility. It is not placing your wealth under someone else's protection, but owning your own key. This is not merely a technology, it is a philosophy.
Self-custody rejects the outsourcing of trust. It is a declaration: “I believe in myself,” and it follows the principle: “Those who cannot bear responsibility have no right to ownership.”
The private key is the essence of Bitcoin ownership. It is absolute control in the digital realm - untouchable by the state, corporations, or banks. If you do not hold the key, you are not the owner.
This philosophy is tied to individual sovereignty. In the digital age, the only way to protect private property is by removing centralized intermediaries. And the goal is achievable only through self-custody. This principle ultimately asks a fundamental question: What does it mean to own?

2025-07-12 06:49:36 GMT

It is difficult to trust what one does not fully understand. That is why many Bitcoiners encourage people to read books and think for themselves first. At times, this may come across as a form of pressure, but true understanding can only emerge through that process.

Bitcoin isn't about being rich. It's about being conscious.

2025-07-11 21:50:43 GMT

The government’s desire to expand its power is natural. What truly matters is whether individuals can wake up and break free from the system. It doesn’t take much - just reading one or two essential books with focus is enough for anyone of average intelligence to understand. The real problem is that most people never even try.
