Big news!
I'm launching a tiny Mac app 🥺🔍🤏
:tinystart: It's called TinyStart, and it's a lightweight Launcher and Emoji picker for macOS!
Unlike Spotlight, TinyStart is super fast at showing results and launching apps. It never becomes overcrowded with search results you don't need, and it lets you open URLs, perform web searches with custom search engines, and quickly open folders in Finder.
Oh and yes, I think the Emoji picker is pretty good too. It's everything the default macOS Emoji picker isn't: it's fast, it lets you insert Emojis in any text field, it isn't picky about keywords, and it learns your favorite Emojis over time.
Get TinyStart at https://tinystart.app: it's €5, you pay for it once and future updates are free!
also I made a lil' video to show you what it looks like:

Cis people reading this, if you intend to watch the new HP series when it comes out, here’s two pieces of advice that you're not allowed to ignore:
• Have the decency to keep it and your reactions to yourself. This trans people-killing piece of media doesn't need any of your free publicity.
• Pirate the shit out of it.

Media coverage aside, looks like this Christmas is gonna suck for trans people who will have to deal — on top of everything — with their entire social circles of cis people gasping and gushing over the new Harry Potter series that's actively funding the policies that are torturing and killing them.

2025-07-05 15:45:06 GMT

I've been getting some questions from admins regarding @nprofile…38wv and its compatibility with Mastodon 4.4 releasing next week:
Unfortunately, I've been overwhelmed with work (and life, generally) lately, so I was not able to release the new version of Tangerine UI ahead of the upcoming Mastodon release like I usually do.
However, *yes*, I am working to adapt Tangerine UI to Mastodon 4.4. It just may not be ready on day one.
In the meantime, nothing will dramatically break if you update to 4.4 and don't wait for Tangerine UI. Just note that users of the theme may encounter broken UI elements here and there (especially on small screens where there have been some significant UI changes in 4.4).
I recommend you enable notifications on the @nprofile…38wv account, where I will inform everyone as soon as Tangerine UI is ready sometime next week!
Thank you for your patience (and sorryyy)

I now wonder what the crowd's justification for defending Bluesky as the better alternative is going to be now.
Really, I want to know.
Because honestly, between the fact that Bluesky has been taking a hands off approach to moderating racism and hate speech targeting trans people, the fact that they've been lying on billboards by saying they are "billionaire-proof", and now the fact that they've voluntarily welcomed JD Vance on the platform (and even gracefully verified his account) while his first step was to post some anti-trans bullshit, I just don't understand how any of you tech literate people can stand on your two feet and still pretend Bluesky is a good platform to prioritize.

@nprofile…z7vu @nprofile…c5l4 Genuinely asking about your last point: is it really your assumption that Apple's system has generally allowed small outlets and journalists who can't afford Apple products to review them?
I'm probably wrong, but from the outside it seems that Apple has mostly prioritized pretty well doing publications over the years, and hasn't been opening up invitations to newcomers (who wouldn't be able to afford to buy all of their new products) much -- quite the contrary.

This is an incredible achievement.
I do not trust the European Commission to take this to heart and swiftly propose a European law banning conversion therapy. But still, the initiative’s success (and the fact that it was able to reach over 1 million statements of support) will immensely help activists across the continent in advocating for the eradication of these torture practices targeting LGBTI people.
Getting the European Commission to follow up will be just one small part of this fight.

Us: “Okay, let's give trans kids access to puberty blockers and hormones so trans girls never have to go through male puberty in the first place.”
Transphobes: "But that's unsafe and causes irreversible damage!"
Us: “Blockers are pretty safe and are like the most reversible thing in the universe actually. Kids who want to go back just need to stop taking them and puberty will resume by itself.”

To the Apple fans fixated on defending Tim Cook, who have been clogging my replies on Mastodon and Bluesky over the past few days following my story on @nprofile…cnpa (https://www.macstories.net/stories/are-pride-wallpapers-and-a-watch-band-enough-in-2025/). Here is my response to you:
In 2014, Brendan Eich, creator of the JavaScript language and now CEO of Brave Software, was appointed as CEO of Mozilla. I will quote his Wikipedia page for you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Eich#Appointment_to_CEO_and_resignation), and you will very quickly understand why:
> The appointment triggered widespread criticism due to Eich's past political donations – specifically, a 2008 donation of $1,000 to California Proposition 8, which called for the banning of same-sex marriage in California, and donations in the amount of $2,100 to Proposition 8 supporter Tom McClintock between 2008 and 2010.
The news of Eich's donations led to major protests inside the company and among Mozilla's supporters, volunteers, and users. Most notably, half of Mozilla's board stepped down. Which ultimately led to him resigning, just 11 days later:
> After 11 days as CEO, Eich resigned on April 3, 2014, and left Mozilla after public outrage. In his personal blog, he posted, "under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader".
I would argue that Tim Cook's donation is an even worse offense than Eich's. Cook made his $1M donation to President Trump's inauguration fund while it had already been public knowledge for years that he would immediately start his mandate by rolling back LGBT rights in devastating ways.
I think it would be more than fair to call for his resignation for the same reason that it was fair to call for Eich's resignation back in 2014. And yet, it seems that a majority of people are choosing to dismiss Cook's donation and subsequent stance regarding Trump's administration as either necessary, pardonable, or irrelevant.

The UK Labour Party has become a cowardly collective of misogynistic and transphobic conservatives with a red coat of paint.
This is what happens when you spend years eradicating any “radical” voices from your platform just to win elections.
In the end, not only are they jeopardizing their own chances at winning anything ever again, but in so doing, they're putting the rights of all women at risk.

If I had to share one clip from John Oliver's great segment on the attacks targeting trans athletes, it would be this one.
Attacks against trans women in sports all come down to one motivator: blatant sexism and gross misogyny. Misogyny that impacts and targets every single woman on the planet, cis *and* trans.
Their one and only goal is to permanently define women as fundamentally inferior to men. For them, the mere existence of trans women is a threat to that scheme.

Gruber should go fuck himself, and anyone who still invites this guy on shows and events should join him in fucking themselves.
It’s remarkable that two of the only times we've ever seen him mention Gaza were:
• When he posted (then deleted) “Fuck around and find out” in reaction to Israel’s bombing and killing thousands of civilians a day.
• When, in the matter of two Microsoft employees publicly calling out the trillion-dollar company against their complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian people, his only choice was to defend the company and question the integrity of the protesters. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2025/04/05/microsoft-50-employee-protests
Gruber is a genocide apologist. I don't fucking care anymore for your excuses. Most of the time, he tries to hide it, but every so often he just can't help himself and has to say it out loud.

I know I may sound like a paranoid leftist when I say this, but I don't think investing time, money, and business years into Bluesky is a good long-term decision.
Bluesky is a US-based company running a social media platform, and as such, it is extremely vulnerable to the terrifyingly unpredictable tides of the current US administration.
The company single-handedly controls the protocol they pretend is decentralized, with 99% of the data circulating through, and *depending* on Bluesky's own servers.
Considering the fact that crypto VC money is what's currently keeping Bluesky afloat and allowing it to follow the stereotypical “burn money now and worry about the business model later” trajectory, I'm worried.
I fear Tapbots is exposing itself to the same kind of trap they've themselves been a victim of the last time around when Twitter shut down their APIs and killed their client. As of right now, I don't see any reason why this can't happen again with the level of control Bluesky currently exercises over the platform and its future, and knowing where its money is coming from.
That being said, I'm happy to be proven wrong in the future, and I'm hoping for the best. I'll just be bookmarking this post, and will make sure to be able to pull it out in the future so I can exercise my fundamental right to tell you all that “I told you so.”
