Fixed @nprofile…sz6l pattern detection, it was checked via raw data, now properly formatted, detects bad actors better.

The monthly hosting expenses are almost due, so if you would like to help this instance financially you can do so here https://donate.ieji.de/
Thank you to all contributors so far. It really helps reducing financial stress.

2026-05-05 20:20:27 GMT

There was some glitch in the matrix. Not sure what it was but all my .de domains from https://elitedomains.de were momentarily down because of some malformed rrsig responses?

2026-03-01 20:51:57 GMT

Heya, my birthday is in a week and I wonder if you'd like to give your favorite instance admin an early present by donating to:
https://patreon.com/ieji
https://ko-fi.com/ieji
https://liberapay.com/SolSoCoG
since moving servers means double the server bills for one month for me. Thanks! And thanks to everyone that keeps chipping in some money I am very very grateful for that! And an especially big thank you to our mods for keeping the timeline clean of harassment, bigotry and bots.
Recent administrative actions:
**Increased performance.
**Moved the instance to switzerland (due to Hetzners price hike coming up) with it's strong data privacy protection bundled with a privacy first hoster.
**Setting up our own image hosting again, so no weird hetzner object storage issues.
**Added our own Cloudflare-like gateway to protect against common attacks and scramble your ips.

I'm considering releasing the code for protli but then again i feel like its not good enough for the public yet and i would be responsible for potential issues so id rather do a long period of private testing first and improve it until the testers and I are satisfied.

2026-02-02 21:50:08 GMT

Looking for a #privacy aware #cloudflare replacement, an easy way to create a #tunnel to your #homelab webservices or DynDNS? Ask me for an invite to https://prot.li ! Currently in closed testing phase.

2026-01-30 21:57:17 GMT

Swapped the caddy ipv6 randomizer with the protli scrambler, you will now have a 2001:db8:* ipv6 randomized instead of a completely random one.

@nprofile…klgm its not really measurable, but updating is less messy without a custom module so ill shift that outwards. Right now the biggest relief would be having puma/sidekiq or the db on a different machine as these 3 are fighting each other for CPU time.

2026-01-10 08:05:01 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…klgm that reminded me of actually tuning sysctl which i did now. Apparently didn't do so on my last server swap. Loading time dropped a lot just now. Will add the firewall soon. Considering doing so from a second machine that forwards with a random ipv6 header towards the backend here so i can remove the ipv6 randomizer from caddy.

2026-01-09 12:48:36 GMT

Recently ieji.de started getting really bad performance, either its denial of service or we are a victim of our success. Anyway, ill be implementing our prot.li protection(which will save your real ip for 5 minutes to a local redis db to recognize attack patterns) and pgbouncer to see if this fixes things. In the long run ill be splitting up services if this does not improve by a lot. I am really sorry, I started the instance also with the goal to show how fast mastodon can work, this is the complete opposite right now. I will also consider a hypervisor restart as the kernel runs quite a few versions behind. The sluggishness started seemingly out of nowhere and i don't see any alarming signs.

2025-12-13 21:13:51 GMT

It is deeply disturbing how more and more websites resides to using cloudflare. I'm just waiting for my online banking to be behind cloudflare, I'd be moving accounts. Unfortunately netgoat release was delayed quite a bit due to lack of time.

Running an undisruptive pg_repack (no kill backend) on the database after 7 years, postgres performance has been deteriorating resulting in longer queues, especially visible on linkcrawling (previews missing), will check for other options if this doesn't improve the situation.

Okay people, I managed to create a really busted ipv6 header randomizer module for use in caddy https://github.com/SolSoCoG/caddy-randomipv6/ so I can tell Mastodon to kindly not save my users ips.

Serving around 7 million torrents at http, https and udp://chihaya.de:6969/announce because after I stopped the tracker like 5 years ago (since the chihaya tracker software wasn't as good as I expected) the traffic was still quite high towards that domain, now using torrust-actix as tracker software, way less resource consumption, barely scraping 1x3ghz cpu core at 7 mil trackers and a million active connections.

2025-04-15 14:18:05 GMT

When a "tech pro" is like "yeah thanks to the NPU, copilot is very fast" and I know it's not using the NPU in the slightest but gets sent to the cloud instead, I loose all respect. Not the tiniest bit of research done.

If you go to the ieji.de account page you will now see a super random (i made sure it uses a considerable amount of randomness) ipv6 each time you refresh the account page. Now there should be no issues, well except if this way of switching ipv6 frequently causes unexpected issues. You surely get "login from new ip" more often. #anonymous #mastodon

I still got to blog about that time when Google screwed me over about not giving me a year of gemini advanced which came as a bundle with a chromebook. I screwed them back by refunding the chromebook, cancelling yt pro and my recurring gemini advanced sub and getting a copilot+ laptop instead. Basicly went from Google to more Microsoft usage, kinda moving from one evil to the next one. Idk felt like trying out that fancy NPU stuff. Also just can't get warm with Linux desktop, quirks everywhere.

Alright, first level support was like "nah the 1 year google ai thing was only until end of december, bad luck that you activated it 3rd of january, whilst it was promoted as available until January." going to return the chromebook and unsubscribe from any google subs. And possibly just degooglify further. ffs.

@nprofile…24ue it's the way the buckets are done, it tries to check mastodata.ieji.nbg1 which it shouldn't really, there's some issues open about that. mastodon itself is chill about that and deleting works just fine but the media cleanups is weird.

2025-01-09 16:22:58 GMT

Okay so I regularly checked, zero sidekiq queues. It's all on zero latency, while we got a 5min queue tops on the ryzen on peak times. None on the 80 core cpu. Work done. Perfectly optimized.

2025-01-04 02:07:45 GMT

All done, 1.3tb transferred. Sorry for the nightly inconvenience.

2025-01-03 07:49:00 GMT

It will take roughly 3h to move 1,5tb of data and millions of files, so ill be doing a transfer between 1 and 4 am Berlin Time zone tonight. Has to be done while the instance is offline, it seems the mirror can only do complete backups and not start at a certain point.

2025-01-02 16:50:39 GMT

Bought a Chromebook plus for basically 30€ because it came with a year of subscription with it. Gonna continue learning Python3 on it and use it as a work laptop.

2025-01-02 16:48:50 GMT

I feel like mastodon should circumvent suspensions for the sake of working account migration. People moving away from horrid fenced garden echo chambers keep asking me why it won't work.
