Hey! You over there. Yeah you. You look sad/angry. What's the matter?
Is there a face that just shows up everywhere you look online, no matter where you turn, and it makes you sad or angry every time you see it?
I may have just the trick to help you make that face disappear (mostly). 🪄 All you need is a web browser where uBlockOrigin works, and you being comfortable copying-and-pasting some custom filters.

You might think of Lunar New Year as the biggest Chinese holiday, but us Cantonese have a saying 冬大過年 – the Winter (Solstice) is bigger than the (Lunar New) Year.
The whole extended family would gather for an elaborate meal. There is no gifting tradition, no tribute to deities, no red pockets, not much in terms of holiday greetings either. Just a hearty repast in the company of loved ones.
No matter what you celebrate this time of year, I wish you a Peaceful Solstice!

2025-11-17 02:32:25 GMT

Let's talk miles per gallon.
Miles are a unit of length. Gallons are a unit of volume, which is length cubed.
Divide length by length cubed, we can conclude that mpg is a unit of inverse area.
Specifically, 1 mpg = 274.3 in⁻², or the inverse of 0.003646 sq in. (Likewise, 1 km/L = 1 mm⁻³.)
If you run an infinite gasoline-filled circular tube with a cross sectional area of 0.003646 sq in (⌀ 0.068 in), into a 1 mpg engine, in the direction the car is going, it could go forever.
Math is weird.

We've been getting small real trees, which gets put on the balcony once the season is over.
They don't tend to keep very well though. Not sure if we water them not enough or too much, or if they don't deal well with the hot Taiwanese summers. How long does a potted Christmas tree typically last? 2 years?

2025-11-16 14:29:32 GMT

Want to get a Christmas tree, but don't have enough space at home? Consider the Half Christmas Tree from Japanese furniture chain Nitori! Just put it against the wall and save half the space.
Pro-tip: Put it against a mirror, and voilà, a "full" Christmas tree!
It comes in 3 sizes: 120/150/180cm (4/5/6′) and are priced at ¥3990/4990/5990 (US$25.82/32.29/38.76) (€22.23/27.80/33.37) (£19.59/24.50/29.41).

No, it's very low tech. The whole setup is just the display unit (shown) and a battery-operated transponder which I placed on a shelf on our balcony.
I think I prefer it these offline devices though. The fewer potential backdoors there are to my home network, the better it is for me.

I'm going to order a slightly more expensive model (even though they are all the same on the inside) from a vendor that lists the item as "needs to be shipped from elsewhere".
At least they are more honest about it.

2025-10-27 09:15:00 GMT

- reply

I put in an order for a new weather station last night from a vendor that stated on the item page that they had local inventory with > 99 items, and they'd ship it within 3 days.
This afternoon, the vendor texted me and said they needed to ship it from elsewhere first, which would take 7 days, and cost NT$300 (US$9.77/€8.40/£7.33) more.
I canceled the order. The extra money and the extra days weren't the problem. The problem was the bait-and-switch tactic.

Earlier today I told a friend from Tokyo about Japanese artists who made full-length English albums (apart from Hikaru Utada 宇多田ヒカル whom everyone already knew about):
• Kaze Fujii 藤井風
• Mari Hamada 浜田麻里
• Seiko Matsuda 松田聖子
• Toshinobu Kubota 久保田利伸
She was surprised that (a) Japanese artists did English albums, (b) they would be known outside of Japan. (But c'mon, everyone of my generation in Asia knew Seiko Matsuda!)
Makes me wonder how their English music was perceived back home.

The CWA has just issued Land Typhoon Warning for #Chiayi, #Tainan, #Kaohsiung, #Pingtung, #HengchunPeninsula and #Penghu under an hour ago, and the warning areas are expected to extend northward throughout the next day or two. Much of the west coast will see > 80% chance of storm force wind conditions between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Two tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific at the moment:
• #SevereTropicalStorm #Mun is expected to briefly reach #Typhoon strength by Sunday morning. It will not affect any major landmass.
• #TropicalStorm #Danas will intensify as a Typhoon, and move NE along the Taiwan Strait, skirting the west coast of #Taiwan on Sunday afternoon and much of Monday.
• Mun is the Yapese name for the month of June; while Danas is a Tagalog word, meaning "to feel".

It's been more than 9 years since I last had sea grapes, and of course it was the first thing I ordered after we landed in Okinawa.
It's a seaweed that's largely cultivated in the Philippines and Okinawa. It tastes like a string of fish roe–with juice full of umami flavor popping inside your mouth–but is entirely vegetarian.
What surprised me was that each strand of sea grapes is actually just one giant cell! Biology never ceases to amuse me.

I only noticed it just now, but Google has collapsed almost all varieties of European voices in its GCP TTS library last month into just one voice per gender.
If any of your apps or services has been using its English (British) voices, they won't sound anything like they used to.
And if you used multiple voices (e.g. using different female voices for different female characters), they will now all sound like the same person.

Yesterday was my mom's last day in town. I took advantage of it also being the first day of the #TaiwanLanternFestival #臺灣燈會 in #Taoyuan :Taoyuan: and took her to see the various light installations.
We didn't get to see all of it, since she couldn't walk that far at her age. But what we managed to see was still quite nice.
I'll visit again next week to check out the rest of the festival.

Oh yeah, 1 gal = 1 cm⋅s⁻². I have only seen this unit used in earthquake reports.
Going forward I will write cm/s² instead to lessen the confusion.
How could one creatively use "gallon" in acceleration measurement though? Maybe "gallon per square foot per second squared"?

I'm a former owner of a 1st generation Pebble and a recent Garmin convert. I am both looking forward to the return of the Pebble to the market, AND intending to keep using my Garmin for a very long time to come.

They are very cool. I'm not as well-versed at reading them as I am with typhoon maps. But it's fascinating to see where the epicenter is in relation to the different plates and mountain ridges and fault lines.
BTW the green "bubbles" in those cross sections indicate historical major quakes and the magnitudes thereof.

Hong Kong diner chefs got their borscht recipes from chefs in Shanghai, who got theirs from chefs in Harbin, a northeastern Chinese city that was primarily populated with Russian settlers in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Though the recipe was brought into Shanghai by the Harbin diaspora in the early 1920s, it was the Shanghainese chefs who replaced the beetroots with tomatoes and cabbage to adapt to local agricultural produce and taste.

Also, looking at your picture makes me hungry for borscht now, either the HK variety or the real deal. I'm not picky.
